Fair way to split this holiday

Large group of friends and family going away this summer to Spain, groups as follows:

Family 1: two adults, 4 children. 3 rooms needed
Family 2: two adults, 3 children. 3 rooms needed
Family 3: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 4: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 5: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed
Family 6: two adults, 2 children. 2 rooms needed

Altogether 12 adults, 15 children. Place booked has 14 bedrooms so enough for everyone's needs. Would you split evenly? Or another way?

If a couple of the rooms really aren't as nice/are attached to another bedroom (we had this) then I would give the 3 room families these but otherwise i would go for the pet family split because bedrooms are only part of the cost of a villa.

Noodles1234 · 12/05/2023 06:30

Per room, then it is fair.

possibly if family I may split equally between families, but friends per room.

overall, sounds like you’re going to get a magnificent place to stay which possibly no party could afford on their own, so at the least sounds like a nice time coming up.

Ovaeasy · 12/05/2023 06:49

We always count adults as 1 and children as 0.5 when working out stuff like this. Though it’s getting trickier now they are all approaching teen age.

Mrsglitterfairy · 12/05/2023 06:52

We’re going next year as a big family as follows and we’re just splitting the cost of the villa 3 ways.
2 adults 2 dc - 2 rooms
2 adults - 1 room
2 adults - 1 room
Not quite on the same scale but same sort of thing. The way we’re looking at it is that the villa costs the same no matter who is going and the family with more dc will have to spend more on flights, food and general spends for the week so happy to split the villa costs

Muminthebluecoat · 12/05/2023 07:09

We do a holiday with different sized families and have always just split it equally between families.

Otherwise just divide the cost by the number of rooms and then each family pay for the amount of rooms they have

This is how I’d do it tbh. The villa has enough rooms for everyone and probably didn’t cost much/any more than a 12 room villa. If you can afford to have a holiday for that many people catered I can’t imagine you’re all exactly on the poverty line.

Split it per family so as not to be petty and the ones with extra kids will have to pay for their flights and food so already paying more.

Presuming you’re all friends I’m sure they’ll make it up to you all by buying extra food/drink, treating everyone to an ice cream etc

Maddy70 · 12/05/2023 10:45

Spilt the rooms cost

Beachywave · 12/05/2023 14:28

We’re going away like this soon and we are splitting it per adult so in your case split 6 ways.

I agree. Equal split - makes the room allocation easier as no one’s feeling like they should get more than anyone else. It’s such a large group that the difference in cost is minimal.

AltheaVestr1t · 12/05/2023 14:43

Split evenly, grown ups get the best rooms!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/05/2023 15:26

For the sake of 2 extra rooms for 2 families when there are so many going, I’d just split it evenly by family. Is there a pool etc as everyone will get use of that?

ZoeDavoMCR · 12/05/2023 16:21

I’d split evenly, you’re all getting the same benefit of a 14 bed house which I’m guessing is extensive communal areas so I think it’s worth it and fair

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2023 16:39

We go away in a large group once a year and always split between how many rooms each family need. We look and book specifically a place that has the right amount of bedrooms.
Works well for us.

BrieAndChilli · 12/05/2023 16:46

We had 17 of us in a villa. It was decided (but we are all family so might be a bit different) to split it by 13 so adults paid a full share and kids paid a half share. There were 9 adults and 6 under 18s.

there were 7 bedrooms and if we had split it by bedroom some would have had to pay a lot more. MIL and her sister didn’t mind paying a bit more so that the kids and grandkids holidays was subsidised a bit.

Bunnycat101 · 13/05/2023 08:18

With a smaller villa my instinct would have been to split by room but by the time you’re looking at 14 rooms I’d just split evenly by family. I’d have thought once you’re paying for something with 10 plus rooms the proportional cost of each extra one isn’t going to be that much.

concertgoer · 15/05/2023 00:26

I’d say it’s something you should have agreed as a concept when you started thinking about it!

Dungaree · 15/05/2023 01:26

Per family. Families using 2 bedrooms get the best rooms. 3 bedroom families get the remaining rooms.

suburbophobe · 15/05/2023 02:14

Sounds like my idea of hell...... (too busy, noisy, stressful)...

But hope you have a great time OP. Each to their own.

Quitelikeacatslife · 15/05/2023 02:15

Split evenly per family in this situation, you are paying for one place that caters to the group need . If was hotel paying per room that'd be different as if one room less would be cheaper.
But definitely have conversation about room allocation before you go, if necessary contact the owners for full breakdown of rooms with pics, there will be a few a lot nicer than others (and these should be for paying adults imo)

Kyliemichelletaylor · 15/05/2023 07:26

Split between all evenly but food wise if the kids are teens, perhaps they put a bit more into the food kitty.

ZenNudist · 15/05/2023 07:31

I'd probably split evenly unless a 14 bedroom costs considerably more than a 12 bedroom

Plus make sure you assign rooms before you go. Person doing the most of the arrangements gets master bed.

icelollycraving · 15/05/2023 07:33

I’d do it by room. When we went away with family, we did it by person including kids but not babies. Still was some squabbles over cooking/cleaning/kitty costs. Did it twice, never again!!

Vermin · 15/05/2023 07:35

How many bathrooms are there? Bedrooms with en suites should be at a premium in a massive group like this!

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/05/2023 08:37

I wouldn't split by room . I would split per head ie adult a whole and child a half or split by six with an unsaid expectation that the families with more children would put more int the Kitty for a meal out or whatever.

There are 12 bathrooms to 14 bedrooms so a couple of rooms have to share but should work out that parents share with their kids. From looking at the floor plan it looks like 2 or 4 of the rooms are en suite. It's tricky to tell
