Simplest fairest way to manage married finances

What's the simplest and fairest way to manage finances as a couple with 2 kids and a mortgage?

DH and I are on the same salary but I only work 4 days a week (from home) while he is F/T.

We're currently don't have an official system or a joint account and divvy things up as we go along, but want to get organised and proactive.

Simple systems and ideas would be much appreciated.

Money all in one account. Transfer any left after direct debits and savings for spending into another joint account.

Save regularly for Christmas and birthdays in another account. Those purchases go on a credit card that is cleared every month from that savings account.

Joint account. We've got in the habit of asking each other for anything we want that's over £100 but that's not really a hard and fast rule. I do spend more on clothes and hair etc at the moment, because I need to look groomed for work and am the only earner.

I only ever worked pt and retired several years ago , husband has always worked ft , all money goes into one account and I then move it around . We both have a card for the joint account and there is always a float in there to use . He rarely spends anything and prefers that I get him cash out anyway .

Both still have our own accounts.

bills are mostly in my name. Dh pays for pretty much everything else like shopping, petrol, etc.

we don’t fuss about who pays what, it all works out roughly even.

A question.

Those of you who only have 1 account between you both.

Doesn't it ruin Christmas/Birthday/Valentines etc surprises if you can see the statements?

We use credit cards to pay for presents for exactly this reason
