because childcare costs are sky high, nappies and milk have gone through the roof.

Tell me I'm wrong.

What the £40 per week I thought child benefit was £20.80 per week for most?

interested to know if the price of nappies is really £2-4 in the Uk?! We are in France, pack of pampers in big supermarket is €17!!!! You can buy them cheaper online in big packs but still not £2-4!! Tin of follow on formula (12mo-3yrs) here is about €9-10 for just average brand (nestle).

U don't have to use pampers u can get supermarket brands that are a lot cheaper and I find are better I've got 5 kids and I always find if u manage ur money in the right way u will be fine and I don't know what baby milk u are getting for £20 u can get a tub of baby milk in the uk for £10.50

Never rlly planned on having any & just got my spay appt — I never felt a deeper sense of purpose than when I signed my consent form. It’s not even the COL alone it’s the cost of upgrades & emergencies w/ the restriction to peak periods synching with algorithms.

It would be more appealing with a flat fee 😭

We got pregnant young unintentionally whilst building our careers, we got the majority of our childcare paid for via tax credits, now we are higher earners and high rate tax payer but with minuscule childcare bills (as kids are now older) Unexpectedly worked out the best way it could for us!

Same for us tho my mum did childcare so didn't even have that bill. People having kids later means it's more of a shock to be skint

Sadly this is a time where a lot of folks will convince themselves ‘ managing ‘ equates to happiness.

Holidays are a fixed costs & you get what you pay for. Kid’s are the riskiest gamble but people put less thought into it than they do on captions for SM.

As long a u can love and care for a child and give them a roof and a safe and clean home to sleep and play and make sure all there needs are taken care of they don't need brand new toys and fancy holidays some people think bring up a child is all about money

emmylousings · 25/04/2023 21:18

If people had children on the basis you describe OP, we would have ceased to exist by now. Think about conditions that people have children in other countries.

What the £40 per week I thought child benefit was £20.80 per week for most?

Child benefits just gone up to £24 per week and £15.90 for the second child. So £40 per week total or £160 every 4 weeks.

Overthebow · 25/04/2023 21:48

More than enough to cover milk and nappies, and a big left over to put towards childcare.

They don't stay babies for long. I've got one and won't be having any more. I'd rather have quality of life then lots of kids I can only just about afford. I grew up in a poor household and it was miserable. No days out, couldn't afford hobbies, poor quality food, parents always stressed about money.

SouthLondonMum22 · 25/04/2023 22:26

It is expensive but the pros of some of the more expensive options (nursery & formula as examples) outweigh the cons of the cost for me.

We pay £100 a day for nursery but the alternative was one or both of us compromising our careers which simply wasn't an option for us so we went into it with our eyes wide open.

Boughtitdownthemarket · 26/04/2023 06:43

Babies cost peanuts. It's when they get older that it gets expensive. My daughter is in size 4 shoes at 8 because she's tall. Can't buy them in the kids section anymore. She needs new shoes every four months because they get destroyed. And that's just one small aspect of what we pay.

I didn't realise child benefit was reduced for the second child in the UK, that seems harsh! Is the third child also £15.90 a week or reduced further?

I thought child benefit stopped at 2! Nothing for the 3rd

That's Universal Credit. Child benefit isn't capped at 2 children.

JingleBellez · 26/04/2023 14:11

I've 3 - third child also 15.90. TC also capped for 3 children.

^ same my son plays football in his school shoes. Whether they're real leather or cheap ones they don't last.

Needmorelego · 26/04/2023 14:59

@kirsty2023 £50+£12+£10 = £72.
Child Benefit is £87 something (just gone up - forget the actual amount right now). So your Child Benefit will cover your milk/nappy/wipes costs and you'd have change.

It does, child benefit comes to more than that per month.
