mummylove · 07/12/2004 21:53

Nope - I dont iron any of my clothes - hang and dry is the best way.

dh and i dont wear shirts which is lucky :)

ChristmasCracker · 07/12/2004 21:55

If i didn't HATE HATE HATE ironing so much then I would do it.

Demented · 07/12/2004 22:24

I have occasionally Blush!

Twice had a huge black bag of stuff done for just over £20, the person who I use has a pricing scale depending on what sort of items they are ironing, I think it goes something along the lines of shirts £2.99, duvet covers £3.99, then 20 items for £12.99, 30 for £15.99, 40 for £18.99.

My Mum used to take in ironing and charged an hourly rate, similar to the going rate for a cleaner at the time. She had two or three regulars and did quite well at this. Although beware you may need to buy a professional iron (Polti are great), my Mum kept blowing the cheap ones up! Grin

I'm sorry - ironing? Could you speak into my good ear...Grin

soapboxingday · 07/12/2004 22:30

I pay £6.50 an hour. Usually takes her 4 hours a week to do all the families ironing. That is 3 to 4 big storage boxes worth. We drop it off Monday evening and pick it up Tuesday afternoon.

It is a good way of earning some money from home, but I'll be honest there's a lot I would do (cleaning, childminding, cooking) before I'd do ironing as I hate, hate, hate it!!

Good luck - hope you get things sorted out:)

Thecattlearemerloting · 07/12/2004 22:30

I pay £5 an hour. My lady picks up the laundry from me one evening and returns it me the next.
I provide hangers and she returns them that way, but other friends of mine that have her have their things folded.

She is great Grin

Thecattlearemerloting · 07/12/2004 22:31

When I say laundry, I mean clean clothes :)

SueW · 07/12/2004 22:33

Round here it is either priced per hour at around £5 per hour or charged at a set price per shirt or similar plus so much per lb/kg of smaller items. Can be sent out in laundry baskets and returned folded. You can supply hangers or they will send horrible wire ones IIRC.

milliways · 07/12/2004 22:48

I used to pay £5ph - 5 yrs ago, but the lady did as much in 1 hour as i could do in an evening. She was extremely popular. Said most people gave her shirts (with hangars supplied). I delivered & collected from her same day (a neighbour). She moved away & was greatly missed. Can't afford it now :(

joashiningstar · 07/12/2004 22:50

I would pay someone...anyone to do my ironing. No-one available round here though.

ladymuck · 07/12/2004 22:52

They collect in a large laundry bag and drop back in either one or two days. From memory it is £1 per shirt, 50p per Tshirt. Shirts back on hangars, most of the rest folded.

elliott · 08/12/2004 10:10

I would pay someone...Would think similar rate to cleaner would be reasonable - £6-ish per hour - I think those rates per item are pretty steep, even I can do more than 5 shirts an hour!
How do you go about finding someone? Do items of clothing ever get lost? Personally I'd prefer someone to do it in my home rather than have to get it to them, but I guess that might be more unusual.

popsycal · 08/12/2004 10:10

A mate of mine has an iron lady...will find out how much they charge......

judegarland2512 · 08/12/2004 10:13

I used to get mine done in the good ole days! Had to do myself for the last 2 yrs :( Last time i had it done, it was £8.50 per hour, and i guess 2 weeks worth of washing (in plastic bin bags - so about 4 bin bags) would be about £30. Mind you, i iron alot less myself that i used to send out for ironing! THey'd come and pick it up and return it all on hangers in plastic bags 2 days later. Oh how i miss it!

nailpolish · 08/12/2004 10:14

omg i love ironing, its very therapeutic. i save huge piles and do 2 a week Blush

popsycal · 08/12/2004 10:15

omg nailpolish - are you mad!!!???
:)

littlemissbossy · 08/12/2004 10:37

I have an ironing lady!!! my one luxury in lifeGrin She charges 60p per item plus £2 collection and delivery.

I also have a friend (in York) who runs an ironing service from her home. She charges £22 for 40 items - this is based on the average number of items in a basket - and includes collection and delivery.
If you've got the demand locally and you like ironing it can be a very good idea - just print up some cheap flyers and deliver them yourself and put notices up in post office/shop windows. Within 6 months of setting business up, friend was doing 45 baskets of ironing a week (with help, not on her own!) - that's average takings of £900 a week!
HTH

nailpolish · 08/12/2004 10:39

do you know what - think i might start a new business. certainly could do with the money. paid to do something i love! bliss!

littlemissbossy · 08/12/2004 10:42

Nailpolish - if you like ironing, it's a seriously good idea, bearing in mind that most people will pay you in cash!
I hate ironing
