Universal credit, change from tax credits

Bit worried about the change to UC next year, on tax credits just now. We have an overpayment which is coming off the amount.

Do you think we will qualify for UC? Apparently the first year they don't have the minimum income floor (DH is self employed) but I'm not even sure what that is? 37 hrs at min wage?

I'm on PIP at the higher rate and ESA (cont based)
DH is self employed averages around 20K a year - also has a chronic illness but doesn't claim PIP / ESA

We have two DC who will be 18/19 and 15/16 (but youngest will be staying on to 18 at school)

I have done an online calculator which seems to say we would be better off on UC because of getting some help with council tax (I think) BUT I'm a bit worried about the conditionality with UC e.g. self employment rules etc and if DH's income goes up and down (which it may well do as he can get paid a lump sum some months and nothing others)

How would this work with UC? Anyone similar?

I believe the first year of not being subject to MIF means the first trading year of the business rather than your first year on UC. It works well for self employed when your income changes because you report your income each month, and your payment is calculated on that, so you don't get over or underpaid like on UC.

OK glad to hear it works well with self employed. I remember looking on forums before UC came in and there was a lot of worry about how it would work with self employment. Maybe with time teething problems have been sorted out.

Would MIF still apply to DH if he had the carer part applied to him and with my ESA / PIP I wonder?

Also does going onto UC mean a new assessment for ESA? (hopefully not, they have said no more assessments required as I'm in the support group of people considered to have long term conditions which won't improve)

The MIF wouldn’t apply if DH had the carer element, and moving to UC won’t automatically trigger reassessment.

Well that's good. Thanks.

From everything I've looked at I'll be worse off when switched over, probably get the transitional then be worse off once that's taken away

Orangesandlemons77 · 10/02/2023 15:50

It's a worry. I hope not Iris

As you will have LCWRA on the claim, even when you have no kids on the claim you will still get the work allowance meaning a proportion of your dh's earnings are completely disregarded before deductions happen. Because of this UC often works out not bad for couples without kids where one has LCWRA.

Ok thanks

Hi Everyone! Just received the migration letter today and have to apply before 7th of February. Does this mean i can even apply on the 6th Feb or even 7th Feb ? Also, i get paid on the 11th of every month for the previous month work i-e 1st Jan to 31st Jan work, i will get paid on the 11th Feb. Please can you advise what date should i apply as i am planning to apply closest to the due date which is 7th Feb.

My Child Tax credit Payments will be 17th November - 15th December and 12th January.

Any helpful advice would be very much appreciated

I think i should apply for UC on the 13th January so that i can get the Tax credit payment on the 12th Jan and then first UC payment on the 20th of February. If i get paid on the 11th of each month and sometimes on the 10th & 9th due to Bank holiday etc, i think i am safe from getting 2 payments in 1 assessment period ? Correct ?
