MOT expired - has anyone been fined?

I've massively f*cked up and forgotten about MOT. It ran out 2 weeks ago and I'm booking the car into the garage this week. Has anyone been fined for this? If so, how much and how long did it take for the fine take to come through? I regularly pass through a ANPR camera and am now terrified that a massive fine is coming my way.

OP posts:

I wouldn't worry. Ampr cameras are also not very reliable, I forgot to tax my car last year (for 9 months!) I didn't get a letter and just didn't think about it. I didn't get caught on a camera once and I had driven all over the country. I only found out as a dvla car parked behind me!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 08:40

i was about 6 months late for my mot one year

biggirlknickers · 20/08/2022 09:06

Yeah, I forgot mine for about 5 months one year. Booked it in sharp, passed the test and never heard anything about it. Don’t worry OP.

Summerbreeze111 · 20/08/2022 09:09

My brother also forgot, got pulled over by the cops and ask to submit the paperwork to them. He went to the garage got his MOT cert, posted it to the police station and never heard from them again! I think he got lucky with that one though, as his MOT was initially around 9 months out of date!

WeAllHaveWings · 20/08/2022 09:12

Go into the gov website and sign up for text reminders. They send them a month before your mot is due.https://www.gov.uk/mot-reminder

rumred · 20/08/2022 09:12

I didn't have an mot for a year recently. Long story about why. No fine fortunately

Wombat27A · 20/08/2022 09:13

And don't drive it in the meantime, you're not insured.

Although you can drive to a pre booked mot centre appointment.

Anon564354 · 20/08/2022 09:23

Fines are rare, but it can sometimes happen. As long as you’re booked in, you can drive it to a pre booked MOT appointment, but don’t drive it anywhere else.

Once it’s done, put a reminder in your phone for one month before the expiry, as you can have it done one month less a day before it expires and keep the original expiry.

eg if due on September 14th, you can have it done from august 15th and keep the expiry date of September 14th.

the government do a free reminder service.

Well, no... don't drive it in the meantime because it is illegal to drive it without a valid MOT.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 09:30

apart from those who drive for a very long time without realising.
drive if you simply have to op, but bear in mind you are not insured!

Str8talker · 20/08/2022 09:32

The only answer is: yes, you may get a fine. Whatever you do, don't drive it any more until the journey to the MOT centre. Don't forget, no MOT = invalidated insurance.

MarmiteCoriander · 20/08/2022 09:39

Yes, DH got fined during lockdown. A police car behind us must have run a check, or have a camera that automatically checks. We got pulled over and it was £100- to be paid within I think 7 or maybe 14days. No points though. Luckily we did have insurance.

Terrible advice.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 09:55

what is so terrible @WeAllHaveWings
you are not suddenly going to be in any more danger by finding out you forgot your mot, apart from having no insurance, your wheels arent going to suddenly fall off!

Having no insurance can be a bit of a problem if you are in an accident 🙄

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 09:57

well we know that @WeAllHaveWings
that much is obvious
what i am saying is the car itself wont suddenly combust, you are no more likely to be in an accident

TrashPandas · 20/08/2022 10:00

I was months late last year. Nothing happened, no fine.

advising someone "if they have to" drive uninsured is always terrible advice. Irregardless of their mot status or the reason they are uninsured.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/08/2022 10:58

what would you do @WeAllHaveWings
do you never make a mistake?
i guess not

Of course I have, and I have missed mots before too, but once you know you have no insurance, driving is not a "mistake", it is illegal with significant consequences if you are in an accident. You have to find alternatives, you dont just do it and hope it will be OK.

LizzieSiddal · 20/08/2022 11:19

I forgot for months one year and absolutely nothing happened. Well apart from me absolutely shitting myself thinking about the fact I’d been driving around for months without insurance (despite me having paid for it!)

rumred · 20/08/2022 11:26

Oops just realised you said mot not tax. I always service and mot my car. It's the tax i missed.

Definitely get the mot done ASAP

Wombat27A · 20/08/2022 12:47

SoupDragon · 20/08/2022 09:25

Well, no... don't drive it in the meantime because it is illegal to drive it without a valid MOT.

Indeed but no insurance & stopped or a a crash has a lot of issues for other people too.

You would be liable for all costs, including personal injury claims, etc. & a criminal record plus the car probably seized.

Wombat27A · 20/08/2022 12:47

I raised it as people might not realise no mot invalidates insurance, not the offence itself.
