MOT expired - has anyone been fined?

I've massively f*cked up and forgotten about MOT. It ran out 2 weeks ago and I'm booking the car into the garage this week. Has anyone been fined for this? If so, how much and how long did it take for the fine take to come through? I regularly pass through a ANPR camera and am now terrified that a massive fine is coming my way.

I didn't know mine was due the first time after moving to the UK as I assumed it was the same time as the tax. No fine or anything.

It can invalidate your insurance if you have no MOT and your vehicle is unroadworthy. Book it in ASAP, and no driving it until you take it in, hope it passes with ease.

Don’t worry OP, cameras won’t be aware unless possibly speeding. It happens to lots of us! I’ve never had a fine.

Nothing will come of it

Mine was 9 months out of date!
No fine or anything .
The stupid thing was DH was just logging on to MOT it when I went into labour so he ' abandoned' it.
The next day we said we must get it done after his paternity ended or drop to his garage for someone else to do. But new baby and all that we didnt get round to it.
We then were using his car for the 4 weeks.
It wasnt until my tax was due we remembered

I went 6 months without getting my MOT done, I just clean forgot. Then when my tax was due I got an email saying my DD had been refused. I thought it was a scam email but fortunately I checked. No fine or anything but I was mortified! I've just signed up for the text alert, very sensible IMO.

i remember i paid insurance for a week for my ds to use my car to come home and walk our dog while we were away, great expense, which it turns out would have been invalid due to having no mot, i believe i had the same failure to renew the direct debit which made me realise.

Does anyone know about parking a car with an out of date MOT on the road? Does that attract fines or seizure etc? I've just realised my MOT expires tomorrow so I've booked it in for MOT and service next week, earliest they can do, and won't drive it in the mean time, but there's no private parking anywhere near me (it's all residents permits and parking on the road, no garages or driveways) so I don't have any choice but to park it on the road.

Can you try other garages? Pretty sure you can't leave it on the road with no MOT - at the very least because no MOT generally invalidates insurance and you must SORN an uninsured car.

OhSunnyMorning · 24/10/2022 13:42

I missed mine by about 4 months and nothing happened. I only realised when I tried to tax it. This was about 10 years ago.

I have tried all the local garages, local to home and local to work, and I've booked into the earliest one available.

If I declare it SORN I'd still need to take it off the road but...where would I put it? That's the problem, no one has drives or garages here, not even to rent out!

I think the situation is really what it is then - you'll be breaking the law but the likelihood of getting caught (especially if you aren't somewhere like a road where lots of people park for the station or something) is pretty low in a week. If you can't find anywhere at all off road to park it then you don't have much choice do you?

tocahairchop · 24/10/2022 14:24

I think you'll be fine if you can show you have an mot booked...
