Proper bank account for 16 year old and 15 year old? Does it exist

Looking for a bank account for a 16-year-old (and possibly a 15 year-old) that runs like a proper bank account. We want the bank account to be somewhere where money can be electronically transferred to but also where the account holder is able to make electronic payments either online or by telephone banking - we do not want an account where you have to physically go into the branch to move money or pay for anything and a debit card is not sufficient either?

Does anyone know an account that fits the bill?
Thank you.

At 16 you can use a Monzo account, mine find it great for tracking spending and making saving pots

mattressspring · 15/08/2022 08:59

Yes, it's just a current account you are looking for.

They are usually under 19 accounts, but start from age 11. Most banks will have this. Who do you bank with? If you are happy, try them.

Popcorncovered · 15/08/2022 09:01

Yes, most banks do those. Just a normal current account. Might be called a young person's account.

hellswelshy · 15/08/2022 09:01

Both my dc have HSBC current accounts, they use online banking via the app and have a basic debit card. Works very well!

Afterfire · 15/08/2022 09:04

Most normal current accounts work like this. Halifax is what dd has had since she was 15. She uses the app to move money etc.

McConkeysPlate · 15/08/2022 09:08

Mine all have HSBCaccounts

EmmaStone · 15/08/2022 09:12

Yup, mine have had Natwest accounts since they were 12 that do this. DD has also had a Monzo account since she was 16.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/08/2022 09:13

Dd 16 has had a bank account at Lloyd’s since she was 12. It’s all electronic.

Luckydip1 · 15/08/2022 09:14

Could they have an overdraft at this age?

Could they have an overdraft at this age?

No, you have to be 18.

abovedecknotbelow · 15/08/2022 09:22

My kids have just opened fully functional accounts with Nationwide that do all of this, they are 11.

CatsAreCrackers · 15/08/2022 09:23

My daughter has a teen-appropriate Nationwide account, just like an ordinary one, with a debit card / online banking etc but any communication is in less formal language. She's had it since she was 11 and is now 14.

Mine have accounts with Metro bank, standard current account. DS’s converted to an adult
one at 18. I have sight of DD’s (14) on the app.

We chose Metro as there’s a branch near us that actually seems to be open 7 days a week.

lisers · 15/08/2022 09:28

My child has a HSBC account. I have a standing order into it (pocket money). Child has a bank card, internet banking and a linked saving account that she manages herself.

FilePhoto · 15/08/2022 09:29

DCs Lloyds accounts do all that.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/08/2022 09:35

It's probably harder to find a bank that doesn't offer that sort of account.

Beamur · 15/08/2022 09:38

DD has a Nationwide account. Does everything a bank account does except overdraft as she's too young.

WobblyLondoner · 15/08/2022 14:04

Starling - just opened one for my DS. It's great, though we have a joint account too so we're already fans.

Oblomov22 · 15/08/2022 14:10

All accounts do that! Nationwide do.

Clymene · 15/08/2022 14:12

Mine have nationwide flex accounts. They manage them from their phones and they have a debit card as well as Apple/google pay.

ODFOx · 15/08/2022 14:15

Mine had NatWest accounts as teens that did all that.

gogohmm · 15/08/2022 14:17

You can get them from any bank from 11. My kids had NatWest.

Anothernamechangeplease · 15/08/2022 14:20

Mine has had an HSBC account for years. She does online banking via the app. I just assumed that most banks would offer something like this.

Lougle · 15/08/2022 14:58

Mine have Barclays accounts. Online app, debit card, etc.

Testina · 15/08/2022 16:26

I should think they all do! NatWest certainly do.
