How much do you spend on holidays per year?

As the subject says, how much do you budget per year for holidays / weekends away?

We are a family of 4 and we currently budget 6k per year. It used to get us a few long weekends and a main holiday abroad for a couple of weeks. With prices going up, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere near as far, yet the £500pm going into the holiday account feels like a decent chunk each month.

Others seem to go away so much more (like we used to before dc) and I’m struggling to make it stretch.

In 2020 we went camping c. £500 all in, last year 10 days in Centre Paris Europe + 3 nights of city stopovers in Bruges and Amsterdam came in around £2.5k and this year we've just booked a week a 4* AI to Spain next week for £3,500 going at very anti-social times and no flight extras such as baggage, sitting together etc. We don't budget we use a combination of wages, savings and this year, overdraft will be needed as it's more than we can really afford. Two adults and 2 teenagers travelling in peak summer holidays.

Orangemoons · 20/07/2022 08:47

Whatever we can afford. This year we have spent about £800 on two UK holidays (caravan and Butlins). 3 young children - eldest starts school in September so it will probably be no holiday next year!

FMSucks · 20/07/2022 08:47

We don't save a monthly amount as such but we put our sights on a destination and then work towards that goal. We were in Orlando in June, cleaned us out and then some, so I would imagine we will only have something very small, if even, next year and then do a big holiday again in two years. I would rather aim for one big holiday than a number small ones, but that's just my preference.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/07/2022 08:48

we have 1 family holiday a year- all inclusive in Europe for a wk- costs between 3.5-4.5k
its what I work the entire year for and look forward to

Cloud16 · 20/07/2022 08:52

About 5k for 2 people. Normally gets us a summer holiday somewhere like Tenerife and city break in winter like Berlin Christmas markets or London.

We did go to NYC for about 2k one year in early January and Montreal for about 3k another year but we didn't go summer hols that year.

HauntingScream · 20/07/2022 08:55

Whatever we can afford. One year we spent £8k touring california. This year, £850 for a week in the U.K.

we always have a budget for (cheap) regular day trips and go out a lot with family and friends so don't feel we're missing out.

This thread has blown my mind more than any other thread over ever read on here

I'm more mind blown that there's people who thing 13 year olds are too big for a single bed.

LilacPoppy · 20/07/2022 00:04

@canellini What do you suppose uni accommodation has? small doubles.

Not unless they demolish a lot of older halls of residence. Ours were fairly new build 22 years ago and they were large enough for a single bed, a desk, a small fitted wardrobe and en en suite with shower and loo. Anyone declaring they couldn't possibly sleep in a single now they were an adult would have been laughed into private rentals and even then, ithinki only had a double in my third year, possibly fourth

uggmum · 20/07/2022 10:08

This year we have budgeted around £9k. That covers 4 holidays.
Jamaica, Rome, Dubai and Croatia.

Next year it is around £12k as we are going to Mauritius, South of France and another location that I haven't decided on yet.

We save a sun every month and then add extra in as the year goes on.

readingismycardio · 20/07/2022 10:12

This year we're honeymooning jn zanzibar (7k), we've been to Poland (krakow, auschwitz, warsaw), approx. 2.5 k, and we're planning 2 more city breaks (4k max). Usually we don't spend that much on the big summer holiday but since it's the honeymoon..

RudsyFarmer · 20/07/2022 10:12

A grand. One holiday.

easyday · 20/07/2022 10:29

I don't really budget, just look at what I've got and plan that way (so if no money no holiday).
We haven't been away for over two years, but in that time I bought and renovated a house. So not a lot spare. So I'm doing one weekend mini break in England with my daughter and a mini cruise with both my kids - £3000 for both.
Next year we will go to Spain after A levels. My family owns the house but with flights, car rental, food, animal boarding or pet sitting, eating out - that will easily cost £3000 up. Then Boston for Xmas which will be at least £6000 .
Then the following year back to domestic holiday. So on average £6k a year.
@BoJoGoGo I'm impressed you did all that on £20k, but maybe you didn't have to book during school holidays?

Woodswoman · 20/07/2022 10:38

You have to bear in mind that a lot of fantasists post on here, and so some people (any guesses? 😂) might be writing what they’d like to spend rather than their reality…

rookiemere · 20/07/2022 10:56

This year we're spending around £10k primarily because of a ski holiday which costs around £5k.
Next year it will probably be less.

I actually think all of these posts sound very accurate and describe the range of my friends and family. Some people do weekend camping trips for £50. Some do 5* luxury in school holidays for £10,000 per week.

Before children I managed to get a deal for 2 weeks all inclusive 5* in the Caribbean for £800. We still do that every year, but now it's during the school holidays and costs a small fortune. But we choose to spend our disposable income on that. Others choose pension pots or reducing mortgages etc.

horses for courses.

Here's a crazy idea... some people may have more money that you or others...

ChuHua · 20/07/2022 19:23

About 3.5k for an abroad holiday once a year. And 5-600 for a few days a family members house in Cornwall. We pay them 250 and the rest is for food etc.
Not a lavish budget but good enough for us!

Cosmos123 · 20/07/2022 21:24

BoJoGoGo · 18/07/2022 07:35

My DH and I budget 20k per year, this year that is just for my DH and I for the first time. On previous years it’s been for ourselves and our now young adult DC.
This year we have booked and even gone or are going on our 4 posh UK hotel mini breaks, a Caribbean cruise, a Baltic cruise, a river cruise, a four day city break on Eurostar and a trip to a hotel in Majorca called La Residencia that we’ve always wanted to visit.
Next year we have already booked a trip to LA and a Mexican cruise and a Canada/Alaska tour with a few nights on a train, a cruise and a couple of hotel stays. Well probably go back to South Africa either Autumn if we can fit it in or if not next year.

Wow. Can I ask how old you are and much annual leave you get.

Also what do you do for a living???!

HairyToity · 21/07/2022 07:21

@user143677433

We have a joint income of 85k, and usually spend 1-2 k on holidays. We have enjoyable holidays for this amount. It's all about how you prioritise your money.

OneCup · 21/07/2022 08:09

Roughly £5k I'd say. This covers a 10-14 day holiday in the summer and in the winter and the odd weekend away. We look for cheap flights and deals.

westcountryfaithful · 21/07/2022 08:14

My mind is blown as well at the sums people are saving!

We’ve been lucky that DM has been renting a holiday cottage on the south coast for years so we go there for 1-2 weeks. Accommodation free. Maybe spend £2k total on everything else. Family of 4 DCs are 9 and 6.

That is coming to an end though. And we want to take our 2 DC abroad.

Shocked how much more it’s going to cost ..

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/07/2022 08:16

We put £100pw in a ‘holiday fund’, this is usually covers a 10-14 night AI holiday but in term time for the four of us please a few short breaks in the summer. Either basic caravans or camping depending on what deals I can find.

Having to be more creative next year as unable to take the kids out of school (SATs & GCSE years).

£3k for a mini break and mini cruise?! That sounds ridiculous!

AuntieMarys · 21/07/2022 08:33

We are not into beach/ hot weather breaks and avoid school holidays ( both in 60s)
We prefer short breaks either here or in a European city and always stay 4/5 star.
3 nights in say Palma we budget £3000, 3 nights in Liverpool £1000. ( including meals/drinks).
New York for a week was £6000.
We rent a house at the coast ...£1000 for a week in May.
This year we are not going abroad so have 4 x 3 night breaks booked here.
I never had holidays abroad growing up...it was a caravan at the coast.

BiddyPop · 21/07/2022 09:31

Our summer holiday usually comes to about €2.5-4k for 2 ad, 1 ch. flights, car hire, accommodation, eating (usually sc but eat out a fair bit) and activities.

We used to always have a city break weekend as well, flights, hotel, ground transport, food etc maybe another €1k.

And sometimes Dh and I would get a weekend in a hotel here while Dd visited granny - €400-700 overall.

Mostly, summer breaks are in IE, UK or EU. But we've gone further afield a few times at more cost - when DH had a big bonus one year, for each of our 40ths, and twice when Dd was competing in world champs we talked on a holiday at the end.

But we only spend what we can afford and don't go wild - we could go for more luxury but we actually like to self cater and relax over coming together. And enjoy country walks rather than big excursions in a group.
