How much do you spend on holidays per year?

As the subject says, how much do you budget per year for holidays / weekends away?

We are a family of 4 and we currently budget 6k per year. It used to get us a few long weekends and a main holiday abroad for a couple of weeks. With prices going up, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere near as far, yet the £500pm going into the holiday account feels like a decent chunk each month.

Others seem to go away so much more (like we used to before dc) and I’m struggling to make it stretch.

We budget about £12k per year for hols. Next year it will be more though as we're doing a big holiday for my birthday that will be £12k ish and we have other holidays too. Haven't worked out how much next years will cost altogether

That's just for me and DH

Onlyrainbows · 18/07/2022 12:13

Joint income of £100k, family of six and we budget around £12k if all of us are going

Pleaseaddcaffine · 18/07/2022 12:17

Single parnet here but Co own a holiday property with my siblings, very fortunate. Cost 100pcm to run for each of us do 1200 a year for two weeks school hols break and as many weekends as possible... Its very very rarely empty.
I couldn't afford a week in a caravan relaly else as it would be expensive!

Alwayspaintyournails · 18/07/2022 12:24

We spend 5k on main holiday plus two long weekends. We usually spend about £100 a day on main holiday and £250 a day on long weekends as take as lot children too so spends really add up on top of the £5k - around another £3k and that’s before we add duty free; ‘essential’ holiday clothes etc. Everything is getting more expensive too 🤦🏻‍♀️

headstone · 18/07/2022 12:43

We try and make the holiday cost under 2k and then extra for spending , fuel etc although we always self cater to and do free things reduce these costs. My DH probably spends another £600 visiting his home country out of season. This year we have spent £1800 upfront cost for 12 nights in a gite in France plus ferry for 6 of us. Would have preferred flying somewhere but too expensive and too much hassle this year.

PeanutCat1 · 18/07/2022 12:46

We usually spend around 2.5k on our holidays at the moment.

We're a family of 3 and DS is still young so we don't fancy taking him abroad until he's a little older (currently all our holidays are in the UK).

This year we are have two centerparcs holidays booked in (one 7 & one 4 night stay) and two caravan holidays (again one 7 & one 4 night stay). I think total it's come to pretty much exactly 2.5k. We will probably go on a couple of weekend breaks as and when so that's not included.

I've definitely noticed the prices going up so I often keep an eye on the holiday locations/ dates we like so I can just book it as soon as the price is reasonable. I've found that the prices fluctuate a lot throughout the year and it helps that DS is still young so not in school obviously.

I do miss going abroad but we are really enjoying our UK holidays at the moment and I definitely think we are getting more holiday time for our money so very happy with the current set up.

We don’t do a set amount each year. Sometimes we go overseas sometimes we don’t (a bigger undertaking as we are in Australia).

This year the budget has allowed for one week in an Airbnb on the beach, one week long road trip in wine country, three weekends away and family Christmas with relatives (requiring flights).

Next year we are planning a UK and Europe trip which will set us back 25k minimum. We only do this every few years though.

The OP's question was answered in the first two sentences.

The rest was definitely boasting!

Passthecake30 · 18/07/2022 13:53

normally £5k for our main holiday, 2 early teens.
next year we have booked florida, so it will be much more, we’re paying it off monthly.

BerryTree1 · 18/07/2022 13:56

how much do you budget per year for holidays / weekends away?

£25,000 - £30,000 ish. Breakdown as follows:
2 weeks in Caribbean at Christmas £10,000
1 week in Greece in May £5,000
1 week skiing Feb half term £6,000
2 weeks in Europe in August. £8,000

Weekend camping trips. £100 twice a year.

I am very grateful for this. I grew up on UK holidays and bunking in with friends of my parents who had already booked holidays - they were kind folk and we basically tagged along.

AperolWhore · 18/07/2022 14:35

We spend around 7k a year, two sun holidays with the toddler and two city breaks without her but it’s getting harder and harder to get away for that so next year we are looking at different options.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/07/2022 14:55

Pre Covid I used to budget 70-100 euros on accommodation and 100 per day for spends which included activities and meals out. Usually self catering so food budget was the same.
That got us 3/4 weekend breaks, 2 weeks in the UK (add flights) and a 2-week beach holiday. Family of 4.

Now I’d probably get half the amount.

xogossipgirlxo · 18/07/2022 15:53

2-2.5k

hopeishere · 18/07/2022 18:58

So far this year we spent about £3000 on a week in the UK (including ferry from Ireland). Will spend about the same on another week in August.

We don't set a budget but I think we need to. We also need to plan ahead more so we're not freaking out at flight prices!!

Next year I would like to:
City break in Oslo
Week "fly and flop" in July
BIG holiday (inheritance) in August

@BarbaraofSeville the double bed analogy doesn't really work. If a room
can't fit a double bed it's a nursery not a bedroom. It would be unusual to have a child past the age off 11/12 in a single bed.

thisbathiscoldnow · 19/07/2022 20:40

£0

Working 70hrs a week and still struggling to afford to put food on the table.

I'd love a holiday but it's a luxury I don't think we'll get for a long time unfortunately

HairyToity · 19/07/2022 20:49

This year with spending money it will be about 2k for the year. We have in previous years got away with about £700 incl spending money. Family of four. We tend to holiday in UK.

We have a reserve account we transfer money into for home improvements, big ticket items like replacing cars, and holidays. I usually prioritise the home, over holidays though.

This is ridiculous. Of course kids have single beds well into their teens. What do you suppose uni accommodation has?

Metabigot · 19/07/2022 21:34

Probably about 3k for a summer holiday but v generous in laws put 1k in to that.

We like going to a festival every summer costs apx 400 for camping tickets then food/spends on top.

Maybe an overnighter somewhere the two of us twice a year

So 3k tops in total that we pay ourselves

FrancescaContini · 19/07/2022 21:40

BoJoGoGo · 18/07/2022 07:35

My DH and I budget 20k per year, this year that is just for my DH and I for the first time. On previous years it’s been for ourselves and our now young adult DC.
This year we have booked and even gone or are going on our 4 posh UK hotel mini breaks, a Caribbean cruise, a Baltic cruise, a river cruise, a four day city break on Eurostar and a trip to a hotel in Majorca called La Residencia that we’ve always wanted to visit.
Next year we have already booked a trip to LA and a Mexican cruise and a Canada/Alaska tour with a few nights on a train, a cruise and a couple of hotel stays. Well probably go back to South Africa either Autumn if we can fit it in or if not next year.

Good grief.

stayathomer · 19/07/2022 21:41

Varies hugely, this year was 3.5k euro total as we went to Italy due to not being anywhere over Covid but in general we just do loads of day trips and maybe stay a night in a hostel. We got a cheap deal of 1000 euro for a eurocamp because we booked a year ago and went term time (which we won’t do again but worked!!!) I’d say it comes down do the level of luxury you want, whether you eat out etc. we’re simple in that way, we won’t camp etc but we would stay in a mobile home and shop in the nearest supermarket with maybe one meal out where we share and swap dishes. Horses for courses really!!

stayathomer · 19/07/2022 21:43

And basically all shared accommodation as an adult too!!!!

Naenaespet · 19/07/2022 21:46

We’ve spent £20k so far this year and will spend 10-15k more.

we have no children, work very long hours, chasing this lifestyle though. Sometimes we do wonder if we enjoy the holidays as much though because my god, the stress.

I should add this is an abnormal amount as we’ve just got married. A normal year budget is £15k

user143677433 · 19/07/2022 22:07

Good god I am astonished at the figures on here. Would love to know how it compares to income.

We budget £1-2k and holiday in the U.K. Income (gross) £250k.

ivfbabymomma1 · 19/07/2022 22:10

Approx £6-£8k but this is entirely dependant on DH annual bonus
