Any summer income ideas for teacher?

minimini358 · 04/07/2022 20:18

As the thread title suggests I'm a teacher about to have the six week summer break. We are trying to save for our wedding so I wanted to try and see if I could earn some extra money whilst on summer Holidays- I've got a little girl so need to work around her but wondered if anyone has any tips/any teachers who could pass on some words of advice?

Thanks!

Babysitting

If you live near me, my holiday nanny has just fallen through. I'd be very happy with your three year old coming along.

There are always people looking for childcare help, even just taking their kids to the park etc

as you have a DBS you could work as a childminder, see if any local community clubs or schools are doing summer clubs that your child could also participate in so childcare isn’t an issue. Offer private tutoring if you specialise in certain subjects and qualifications ie gcse science. If you’re primary school then general English and maths tutoring.

Bars & restaurants are crying out for staff, a lot of us nhs staff (admin) are working weekends and evenings as top up money and I know that they are desperate for people off during the summer to help out.

Lingoflaming · 04/07/2022 20:33

My local MENCAP, children's & isability charities are hiring summer play workers. Worth having a look at your local voluntary sector as they're struggling to recruit atm.

Can you do some tutoring on the side you can even work from home if you wish by doing at home tutoring. You can also be a summer camp leader they would love someone with your qualifications or work with a temp agency doing a variety of roles. Private nurseries are still open in the summer if you would like to work with early years and they may need a teacher to cover the preschool.

Yodaisawally · 04/07/2022 20:34

Are you allowed to take in another job? What about tax implications?

Morellocherries · 04/07/2022 20:35

Domicilliary care? We always struggle during the school holidays when staff want holidays or time off with their own kids. We would probably take you on even if you said it was just for the summer, although you could always say that you may continue with evenings / weekend work or over Xmas etc.
Obviously you couldn’t take your own child to work but you could probably work around your partners hours.

Fizbosshoes · 04/07/2022 20:39

I was going to suggest tutoring if there is demand for it in your area

catsonahottinroof · 04/07/2022 20:45

Exam paper marking?
I was also going to suggest tutoring - but most families probably want a break during the summer. You never know though, there might be some students going into year 11 who need extra help with English or maths.

demotedreally · 04/07/2022 20:46

Just like any second job for tax

minimini358 · 04/07/2022 20:59

Any ideas where I could advertise for tutoring?
Thanks for all the great ideas!

If you don't mind doing online tutoring, look on the Tutorful website.

Have you thought about teaching abroad for a few years? Slightly more longer term than just the summer! Obviously it depends what your husband does, but as your daughter is young she can adapt quite easily to new a new environment. Depending on where you move to, you can earn a lot of money and have a completely different lifestyle.

Shanghai1 · 05/07/2022 03:06

When I lived in the UK I tutored (online and in person) and marked exams (painfully boring). Too late now to sign up to mark exams for this summer. I tutored all year round - maybe that is something to look into? For online tutoring I used a website called Tutor Hunt (A level), but also found clients through word of mouth.

Autienotnaughtie · 05/07/2022 03:16

Bar/restaurant work

sashh · 05/07/2022 04:59

I spent one summer working at National Express, if you are in / near Birmingham they are always looking for people to answer phones, they operate 24hours every day so you can pick up shifts.

Marking is an obvious one but the exam boards have probably already got people.

It's probably too late now but for next year could you arrange some sort of holiday club at your school?

You don't mention if you teach primary or secondary and of course you couldn't do it alone. Primary lots of parents struggle to get child care.

Secondary more of a week by week activity, maybe drams, art, sports.

caringcarer · 05/07/2022 05:49

Exam boards are screaming out for examiners for GCSE and A level. You could do tutoring or summer play schemes. You could do something not education related like dog walking or baby sitting, cake making, or bar work in evenings. Put a card advertising dog walking or baby sitting in shop windows.

English language courses are crying out for teachers this summer- after two years with lots of them not opening at all, lots of teachers have moved on.
In theory, you need a qualification to teach ESOL, in practice, with the shortfall of teachers, most places would bite the hand off a teacher (of any subject) with QTS. The school where I work always has 2 or 3 non TEFL but QTS teachers over the summer.
If you look for language schools near you, you'll find something I'm sure. Check they are British Council accredited. Ones offering residential positions are more likely to still be recruiting.

husbandcallsmepickle · 05/07/2022 06:16

Selling resources on TES website. I've only added a couple of pages but people do pay for them.

Libertybear80 · 05/07/2022 06:39

Marking papers is the obvious choice

sashh · 06/07/2022 03:09

Supermarket delivery. I got talking tot he Iceland driver, he has an MA and is starting teacher training in September.

He said the money is good and extra shifts are available.

ivykaty44 · 09/07/2022 17:19

babysitting, people are desperate for flexible childcare during the summer holidays and you can pick up 3/4 days a week easily
