Malicious £300 eBay postal return

I sold an item on eBay. I paid £60 to courier it to them (I only charged them £20 in the listing).

they wanted a refund, it went to a dispute, & they were refunded.

they packed the item (a bike), i instructed the courier to pick it up.

I noticed the box was much heavier, when it arrived. I’ve just got a bill from the courier for excess weight. It’s 59 kilos MORE than on the outward journey. I’ve been charged over £300 for the return postage. EBay refuse to do anything about it, bc they can’t claim the money back.

What has made it so much heavier on the return journey?

MissStarry · 28/06/2022 10:15

How did that happen?! Was the buyer sat on the bike when it was loaded into the van?

marmitetoastie · 28/06/2022 10:57

they’ve packed the box, I think there’s something buried in the cardboard.

guess I have to take them to court. It’s a bike shop. Any advice?

What’s buried in the cardboard? 59 kilos is about 9 stone! Are you sure the courier company haven’t weighed it wrong? Weigh it yourself to find out.

WeAreBob · 28/06/2022 11:01

Have you unpacked it to find out what is in it?
You've got the item weight from the courier, you need to see what has been packed and then make a small claims application online.

WeAreBob · 28/06/2022 11:02

And if you can pick it up, I doubt it is actually 59 kilos more.

Have you weighed the box yourself? Stick it on a set of scales as best you can.

Either they've packed it with rocks or the courier made an error. You shouldn't have let the courier leave it with you until it was weighed infront of you.

You need to unpack to see what is inside.

PerkingFaintly · 28/06/2022 11:04

Can you film the weighing and unpacking?

Otherwise the other parties will try to claim it's somehow your doing.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2022 11:05

A bit of extra cardboard in addition to the bike and box doesn't weigh an extra 59 kilos. Why didn't they just send the bike and box back in the same manner that it arrived? What was their reason for disputing the transaction and getting a refund?

But you know who they are and where they live. If they've maliciously put a load of other old shit in the box and not told you that they're not sending the same parcel back, I'd be telling them that they can pay your excess courier charges, otherwise I'd be taking them to the small claims court for the money, which you've probably got a good chance of winning.

But how infuriating. And sadly proves me right for never sending something like a bike sold on ebay by courier, no matte how much they beg.

It's a pain to pack, costs a lot to transport and, like you've discovered, leaves you open to being screwed over by piss takers.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 28/06/2022 11:06

You'll have the weight on the outward journey as evidence of its weight, but you need to unpack it to see that the bike has been returned intact and what is causing the excess weight.
Get onto courier company if they have made an error in weighing the parcel, or small claims to recover your costs.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2022 11:07

Cross posted. Yes, an extra 59 kilos on what was already there is so heavy most people couldn't lift it, so it could well be an error by the parcel company not an actual extra 59 kilos. That would suggest someone was standing on the scale with the parcel.

pigwood · 28/06/2022 11:07

Is there a body in the box too ? Blimey 😦

Paq · 28/06/2022 11:15

5.9 kilos?

Sally090807 · 28/06/2022 11:16

How can they bill you after delivery. I thought all details had to be filled in online with regards to weight and dimensions and then paid before collection.

Sally090807 · 28/06/2022 11:18

That’s over 9st, I don’t know any couriers that would collect an item of that weight.

Sally090807 · 28/06/2022 11:20

EBay always find in favour of the buyer even when they are at fault, that’s the reason I won’t sell on there anymore.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 28/06/2022 11:22

Seconding everyone who says there is no way that its 59kg heavier; that's 9 stone and you'd struggle to move it, let alone find a courier happy to do so.

Is this a weighing error for the courier?

mummyh2016 · 28/06/2022 11:23

Have they definitely sent you the same bike back?

WeAreTheHeroes · 28/06/2022 11:25

I can't believe you've posted here before 1. Weighing the bloody thing yourself; and 2. Investigating what is actually in there if it does weigh 59kg more!

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 28/06/2022 11:26

So confusing Confused

LilyMarshall · 28/06/2022 11:33

Whats in the cardboard?

ShirleyPhallus · 28/06/2022 11:35

Is there a body in there??

TidyDancer · 28/06/2022 11:36

Omg that's madness. Have you unpacked it and/or spoken to the sender?

Sally090807 · 28/06/2022 11:43

I find it hard to believe this post is genuine, I’ve looked online and with a courier it’s under £70 for a parcel of that weight and with all couriers you have to pay before collection

Ilovedthe70s · 28/06/2022 11:43

59kg!!!
Have they sent back the bike and the rider??
