Seems like the Inland Revenue are cocking up tax credits AGAIN for a lot of people on MN, including me, and suddenly deciding that they've overpaid by some idiotic amount.

Apart from complaining to the tax credit offices (as much use as plaiting fog), what is there that you can actually do, especially if they stop your payments (which thankfully they haven't done to me YET). Any legal eagles out there?

Also, how do you find out who would be the minister dealing with this sort of thing?

TIA!!

think it's the Treasury Minister, Dawn Primarolo who is responsible

bonkerz · 22/11/2004 14:03

I would defo support any cause that kicks those tellytubbies into shape! Have just finished my appeal letter after a mistake on their part! (they had my dh down on the computer as working 39 hrs and earning nothing!) Now they want £2500 off us!!!!

Who should we write too? If we all do it together we might get some notice taken!

wobblyknicks · 22/11/2004 14:03

Thanks mts - god you are quick!!!

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3959159.stm

and have a look at the above link from bbc website - there is apparently a form you can fill in asking to keep the overpayment

wobblyknicks · 22/11/2004 14:05

Thanks sm!!

mts - can you be our new queen - where do you get those helpful links from!!!

MummyToSteven · 22/11/2004 14:06

searching the bbc news web site - now why don't I just accidentally come across titillating sites when I do that - still think there is something WWB isn't telling us

littlemissbossy · 22/11/2004 14:08

Wobblyknicks, there's been quite a bit of press coverage recently about overpayment of tax credits and I understood from the reports that they can't claim it back - the last error cost the IR £9m - the bloody idiots!!
The minister in charge of that sort of thing is on here www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/About/Ministerial_Profiles/minprofile_primarolo.cfm

I certainly didn't know anything about the form to stop them reclaiming it - they keep that nice and quiet!!! It's their fault so they can blinking pay!!!

HAve posted on the website and also have just recieved the TC846 form and filled it in! hope we aint waiting too long for a reply!!!!!!!!

coppertop · 22/11/2004 14:15

I will gladly lend a foot to assist in the arse-kicking process. I found out in August that they'd been underpaying me since April. The money then went up but the b*stards won't give me something in writing to say how much I should be getting. Grrrr!

JuniperDewdrop · 22/11/2004 14:19

Give them a kick for me whilst you're on Can't go into too much detail but lets just say I feel like spitting when I see the words Inland Revenue.

MummyToSteven · 22/11/2004 14:22

from the legal perspective, if you had detrimentally relied on the money (i.e. spent it!) and had no reason to believe that they had overpaid you, I would have thought the Inland Revenue would have been "estopped" from claiming it back. any other legal views on this???

wobblyknicks · 22/11/2004 14:27

Well I'll be filling in that form asap and heads will roll if any money gets taken off me!! I thought it looked like the right amount, I spent it in good faith so they're not having it back!!! Hope yours gets somewhere bonkerz!!

I want to join in the kicking! My dh had to pay them money that he was not due otherwise they were going to take him to court. 18 months down the line we are still trying to get it back! Then last Saturday we got 5 letters from them which were all exactly the same. Has anybody else notice that they seem to send all their mail out on a Friday night, so you cant talk to anybody on a Saturday and by Monday you have probably calmed down a bit

ebbie22 · 22/11/2004 16:21

Dont even go there girlys......

bonkerz · 22/11/2004 16:21

well have just posted the forms so will now see how long it takes to get a reply! Thing is that we only got £84 per week and our childcare bill was £120 so we thought that what we got was actually too little!!!!!!
