£6 for a load in the tumble dryer?

whereisthejasmine · 01/04/2022 08:24

someone on the news just said that it will be £6 per load to use the tumble dryer? is that right? I am searching online and the rates I see are more like 37p per hour a year ago - if that doubles its still less than a £1/hour.
Be grateful to confirm the realistic cost for 2022 as if it is £6/hour I will have to abandon it.

We just got our gas bill from 48 days until 31 March. It was 62 pounds. Going forward it will be 110 pounds approx for the same period on the new rate. Bit of a shocker. H won't turn off the heating as it was snowing yesterday. We have it set to come on twice a day for a short period of time and if it gets very cold. Hot water is instant from gas boiler.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/04/2022 13:20

You don't have to wait until the summer to dry washing outside. If the path is dry the washing will dry even if it's cold. Air it indoors before you put it away.

Caspianberg · 02/04/2022 13:25

Drying on an airer outside in winter rather than a line is easier. As if it’s a dry winter day you can just wheel or lift drying rack out, leave outside whilst dry and wheel back indoors if it rains or to finish drying overnight. Most the damp will go outside and clothes smell fresh

All the price increases on elec we've seen, it's the standing charge that's doubling, with the cost per unit going up by 1p max. So surely using the tumble dryer will cost pretty much the same.

The cost hike comes from just being supplied electricity each day.

Lucky you. Everyone I know is seeing a significant increase in their unit price.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/04/2022 14:48

Lucky you

I'd rather be billed more on units used, as then I can reduce what I use and try and save that way. Doubling my daily standing charge is something that can't be avoided here.

princesssparklepants · 02/04/2022 14:49

An organiser I follow on Instagram says the following:

Extra spin in the washing machine

If the grass is dry, your clothes will dry outside

Put clothes airer near a sunny window. Have a window slightly open.

Don't put clothes on radiators

cptartapp · 02/04/2022 14:54

Never use mine. Stuff dries on radiators in an hour if not outside.

Maireas · 02/04/2022 14:56

Dogs seem more expensive than the tumble dryers Grin

0ats · 02/04/2022 15:10

Why don't put clothes on radiators?? We do this

Surely this is only possible if the radiators are on? I'd say it costs more to heat the house for the hours and hours it would take to dry everything than to run a load in the tumble dryer?

Doubling sounds awful and dramatic. But the standing charge increase is about £6 a month.

Its the unit price increase of over 50% that's the problem...that's what will seriously increase bills and you can only cut usage so much.

It would have worked out far better for most if they trebled or quadrupled the standing charge and left the unit charge alone.

LizzieMacQueen · 02/04/2022 16:07

Don't know about anyone else but my standing charge alone is £320 a year, that's for both electricity & gas. With E.on.

BertieBotts · 02/04/2022 18:26

Eh, sorry, can we go back a bit?

Tumble dryers invented to encourage people to use energy - was that really a thing?

I can see that they might have been invented to make profit/sell themselves even though not strictly necessary - there are plenty of products like this - but I had not heard of any point at which people were being encouraged to use electricity. When was that and why?

PoshWatchShitShoes · 02/04/2022 18:49

I do 3 loads a day in the tumble dryer. Each load takes 2 hours.

I've just started using the drying rack more regularly, but that only has space for 1.5 loads per day, so I still need to tumble dry at least 1 load a day.

I don't like the look of washing lines 😂 And also it seems like a big hassle to be going in and out to hang washing. May investigate that option though given bonkers increases!!

Calennig · 02/04/2022 18:57

www.ransomspares.co.uk/blog/news/history-of-the-tumble-dryer.htm - this history mentions nothing about encouraging people to use energy just wanting clothes dry.

Does seem victorian wash day being a Monday was so there was pleanty of time for clothes to dry and be done with by Sunday as that was day of rest - also meant there was left overs from Sunday lunch for main meal on Monday as kitchen would be full of wet washing.

Calennig · 02/04/2022 19:02

Get a washing basket empty washing machine into it then peg out.

April showers - washing stays out as they zip past quickly and are usually fairly light.

I like sock driers got metal ones as it meakes it easier to bring them in quickly if it does rain as well as metal pegs as they can just stay on the lines.

Eh? The cost per kwh for electricity has gone up far more than 1p! It's gone up 8p for electricity and 3p for gas as of April, if you're on a price-capped tariff.

The standing charge doubling looks bad but is a relatively small increase over a year, about £80 more (still a lot to a lot of people). The unit charges are what is costing people.

WelshyMaud · 03/04/2022 09:09

If you're a very low user then it may seem a lot...but that's 'only' £27 a month.

It's a drop in the ocean compared to the average bill.

There are so many people raving about the standing price doubling as they're now paying £350 a month for energy or whatever. It's not the standing charge causing these massive bills though.

PlainJaneEyre · 03/04/2022 10:58

My gas was 3.86 per kw and standing was 24p
It is now 7.32 per kw and standing is 27p so the killer is the usage with an 89% increase. Standing is 12% increase.

Electricity was 20.53 per kw and standing was 23p.
It is now 29.48 and 41.66 . The killer is both the standing as you have no option and has gone up by 81%. Usage is also up by 45%.

(If my maths is correct on a Sun Morning)

I will be paying approx 250 pounds a year standing charge with EON.

princesssparklepants · 04/04/2022 20:33

I think putting clothes on radiators creates
More damp.
Rather then having clothes on a airer In front of a radiator which allows air to circulate

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/04/2022 21:52

I don't have a washing line as my back yard is about a square meter so no real space. Would a clothes horse outside work?

Yes.

You will still need to peg your items to it to stop them going next door if it's windy.

Also if possible have more than one.

(Use to use clothes horse as well as clothes line outside as a kid. )

Haven’t read the whole thread but say an average tumble dryer is 2000w that’s 2kwh per hour. So 28p x2 = 56p. I’ve excluded the monstrous standing charge. We all have to pay that sadly.
So if you tumble for 4hours say it’s £1.12 .
Nowhere near £6.
I’ve also read about people not using the dishwasher to save money. Many dishwashers heat the water so maybe use 1.5kwh of electricity to run a cycle.

I’ve looked at my smart meter readings. The main thing that’s costing me is the heating. That’s gas. I do dry clothes on radiators as I’d rather have a slightly warmer house. No problem with damp.

Roll on the warmer weather.
