Money left after bills

Bibbitybobbityboo86 · 11/02/2022 20:09

Me and my husband sat down tonight to go through our bills

Our outgoings are

Mortgage
Car service plan
Utility bills
Petrol
Phones
Insurance (we’ve got everything insured including good life insurance)
Pension
Tv subscriptions
Kids clubs (swimming club and brownies)
Christmas savings

We’ve got about £650 left. This goes on things like Birthdays, clothes, haircuts, holidays etc…

We have no debt except the mortgage- no
Loans or credit cards

My husband said it doesn’t seem a lot left. I disagree and think this is fine

My question is rather nosey but it’s not the sort of question I could ask people I know.

What id like to know is what do you have left to play with after your bills have come out?

I know it’s probably bad taste - but I just want some perspective

@apprenticewage thank you! I missed the second update!

Op I think it's a lot more than a lot of people but not to others. If you feel comfortable and it meets your lifestyle then I wouldn't worry.

Personally it wouldn't be enough to cover what we want to do and we're a 2 adult, 1 dc and ddog family.

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 23:21

It would be tight for me and I also wouldn’t like to not have regular savings but we all have different lifestyles so if you’re happy with that, that’s fine.

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 23:23

@ballsdeep it’s not ridiculous at all. We all have different lifestyles and live to our means. Just because it’s not your reality, doesn’t make it nobody else’s.

RussianSpy101 · 11/02/2022 23:25

@OutlookStalking she didn’t actually ask for reassurance. She asked for what everyone else has which is exactly what @MintMe has commented.

Perspective does not mean the same as reassurance.

KissKissButtCheek · 11/02/2022 23:32

We have roughly £1200 - £1400 left over after bills etc. At least £150 goes into savings without fail, and the rest we give ourselves a weekly budget to try and leave some money over......doesn't always work though !

catfunk · 11/02/2022 23:33

2k on essentials and food, travel etc
2k left over

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/02/2022 23:44

I count savings, food and fuel as bills so usually have £200-£400 left a month.

whatdoidonow2005 · 12/02/2022 01:34

How much is going in pensions ?
£650+ both maxing out pension is completly different to someone with
£3k + 1k pension

anotherbrewplease · 12/02/2022 07:18

Wow - there are some extremely wealthy people on this thread OP. I mean if your monthly income is £6000 and you have no mortgage and one child.....

We have 3 kids living at home still. Income around £2800 a month, and around £800 per month spare after all bills paid. We are in the older age bracket though, and have paid off our mortgage.

TheElusivePotato · 12/02/2022 10:01

After bills I put aside £1000 per month for food, fuel, birthdays, days out, clothes etc then about £1400 goes in savings. It hasn’t always been like that though, so I appreciate we are very fortunate.

crossstitchingnana · 12/02/2022 10:21

£1500

crossstitchingnana · 12/02/2022 10:23

Whoops, £2500

DaphneduM · 12/02/2022 10:55

We're older and retired and have about £1300 a month left after bills and food. No mortgage. It will increase next year when my husband will be eligible for his state pension. We spend quite a bit on petrol at the moment as we look after our grandchild twice a week, but that will lessen once he gets his free nursery place next year. This amount left is of course all before increases in gas and electricity kick in. We haven't heard anything yet from our supplier.

bumblefeline · 12/02/2022 11:08

Zero at the moment

Buttercup72 · 12/02/2022 11:22

One child couple, we have about £3600 income (joint), after direct debit bills, and money to savings we have about £250 x4 leftover for spends, but this covers food, petrol as a well as frivolous/fun stuff. It feels quite tight to me, dip into the ‘savings’ too often, but I’m separating my bill account from ‘spends’ so will hopefully stay on budget a bit more often.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 12/02/2022 11:34

I give myself £150 a month spends.
The rest is bills/ food/ savings.
Covid wiped out virtually all savings during the first lockdown. We would of sunk without it so not having an emergency fund is not an option for us

feelsobadfeltsogood · 12/02/2022 11:49

We have about £1000 left soon to be less with the rising bills!!!!

PinkSyCo · 12/02/2022 12:43

Fuck all.

Alarae · 12/02/2022 12:51

We are in the fortunate position that we have about £1.5k leftover to cover miscellaneous spends after mortgage, essential bills, small debts, childcare, food etc. This will go down a bit when our current energy fix ends though and we go to the price cap.

We don't have a car payment though nor really much travel costs which helps. I know some of my friends have car payments of >£500 a month and it freaks me out.

feelsobadfeltsogood · 12/02/2022 13:04

We are also very savvy I sell absolutely everything the kids have finished with and try to get money back. I have a target of £100 for pre-loved stuff and I save that money up separately

Kim82 · 12/02/2022 13:16

After all bills and food is paid for we have around £1400-1500 a month left over. We have 2 adults and 3 dc in the house. We tend to save half of that then use the rest for anything anyone needs (clothes, shoes, etc) and just general entertainment for the month.

We’re lucky to have no debt apart from our mortgage which is low as bought in a cheap area. And it’s only recently that we’ve had so much spare, if this question was asked 2 years ago our disposable income would have been much, much lower!

RussianSpy101 · 12/02/2022 13:26

Just moved and now have a (small) mortgage so we now have £2400 left after everything; savings, pensions, all bills, food & diesel.

I have a fairly shopping dangerous shopping habit so this comes in handy 😂

avocadotofu · 12/02/2022 13:35

After bills, food and saving we have around £1000. We have one child which really helps.

Adelais · 12/02/2022 17:31

After bills and food about £500 a month. Have to pay for diesel out of that though. We have 2 kids together and pay cm for his other child.

Darbs76 · 13/02/2022 08:23

At present I save £1250 for house deposit, £250 for Christmas and birthdays and maybe £150 for holidays, sometimes more. So I don’t necessarily have money left as I put it into savings accounts at the start of the month. If I thought of it as spare I’d waste it and I’m saving for a house. I’m doing a fair bit of overtime at the moment so usually would have less left. That’s just my income as I’m separated. I’m fortunate to not be paying rent at the moment though or no way I’d be able to save what I am towards the house. I have 3 children; 1 adult and 2 teens. I do pay other household bills and obviously Children’s expenses
