Not that I have or anything!

Just interested in what folks would do with that amount of money!

Buy a house. I'd use all of it. We are currently house hunting and are struggling to find what we want for less than 950k - 1 million, but really only wanted to spend 850k max, so it would solve that first world problem straight away.

That would enable us to put our own savings into helping our DC get on the housing ladder without being any worse off ourselves.

Scbchl · 04/01/2022 04:53

Buy a better house. Could get a really nice one in my area for 400k. Go a lovely holiday, pay off any debts and continue as normal with life.

BasiliskStare · 04/01/2022 05:07

@TheLittleRedToothbrush - Oh - how much do penguins cost - and to the point the pool you would have to install to keep it happy. ( I do realise you can't actually buy a penguin but what a lovely thought. ) Grin

Maybe a penguin bollard although not quite as lovely.

GarageMusicLover1980 · 04/01/2022 05:14

I'd ask to buy the rental I'm in now off of my landlord (I love it here) 3 bed end of terrace
I'd put some in savings for my children.
Take them abroad, as I've never been able to afford too (single parent carer)
And give some to my parents to make them happy. (All they do is argue and tell me how much they hate each other)
Some to a charity
And probably get myself a decent decorator to repaint as I never have time

That would be it Smile

Stressedmummyof4 · 04/01/2022 05:22

I so wish this would happen for us Grin

I'd pay off some debts
Buy a static caravan in our favourite place and pop so much money by for fees smoke the next 5 years.
Get my garden sorted, paving kids a proper pool
So much more I'd love to do!

ShottaSheriff · 04/01/2022 05:27

Half on a bigger house and new furniture, then I’d buy a campervan and save the rest to put towards nice holidays, school fees and a chunk in savings and investments for ourselves and each DC.

WoodenReindeer · 04/01/2022 05:51

Wow this would be properly lifechanging for us. I am terrified about various health issues and lack of pension. This would sort everything.

purplesequins · 04/01/2022 05:53

put a third in the pension.
a third in savings and for pleisure/travel.
divide a third and put in investment for dc.

stayathomer · 04/01/2022 06:05

I'd love to turn up to my sister's house and mil's with new automatic cars. Both have health issues that mean driving is tough. After that set up a small savings account for each of the kids and yes, I'd pay off the mortgage too!

NelliePig · 04/01/2022 06:16

We live in an area very cheap for property/land. I'd buy a large area of land and set up a farm park/petting zoo type business. My sister and her boyfriend (both zookeepers/vet techs/animal enthusiasts) would work for me and run the business.

I'd build a house nearby for me and my partner and then probably have 4 more kids now I could afford it 😂

Assuming the business goes well, my mum and dad would sell their house (totally unsuitable now as my mum is disabled now) and they could use the money to build a house on my land. My dad is retired, although forced as needed to care for my mum, but only mid 50s and used to be a farm worker (pigs) so he could help part time and be my handy man for the business.

My other half would keep his job for a few years and then when we know everything is successful he could leave and come and join us.

Its been discussed around the dinner table many times here, I think my sister and partner in particular hope we win, they are both struggling to move back home and find well paid animal jobs. Currently working and struggling to rent in London 🙈

Very interesting to see what everyone else would do. I've given way to much thought to something that will never happen havnt I....

JustJustWhy · 04/01/2022 06:24

Stop working immediately and be happy.

Whysotired · 04/01/2022 07:03

Pay off mortgage, go part time to spend more time with toddler, take the parents on holiday, buy a bigger car wouldn’t be flashy just practical as a three door is killing me with a toddler. Save some for DS for a house deposit and in case he went to university. Donate some to charity, give myself and DH 5 grand each to ‘do what we want with’ and then Invest the rest for old age.

merrymelodies · 04/01/2022 07:04

Invest it

ShadowGirls · 04/01/2022 07:16

Move to a nicer town

MrsHGWells · 04/01/2022 07:21

This would be a useful amount to help set up the retirement nest egg (we are mid forties house) and allow the teens to explore those passions and University options.

Start/Complete house renovations,
Retire debts.
Invest in income producing assets (rental/Sharemarket)

Keep working for the next 10-15yrs as these are your prime earning years and more cash drains out in education/ cost of living.

Allow extra funds for experiences - travel, hobbies, health.

Would invest ISA for children towards university.

Donate to charity or sponsor education for underprivileged children (early years - secondary school)

rookiemere · 04/01/2022 07:29

We're early 50s and have paid most of our mortgage off, so we'd need to work out if a million was enough to allow us both to retire straight away, or if not what was the soonest point we could do it and still have enough to put DS through university.

That's what I'd like to happen to the money but not sure DH would want exactly the same.

Riverlee · 04/01/2022 07:36

Pay the mortgage off. Put some aside for dc’s house deposits. Have a rainy day found. Donate some to charity. Then see what’s left.

weegiemum · 04/01/2022 07:41

Pay off mortgages

Charitable gifts

Set up savings for dc x 3

Holiday(s)

Might be just enough for dh to retire early and if not, he could go very part time.

ufucoffee · 04/01/2022 07:42

Pay off mortgage. Stop working. Give some to my children. Spend rest on the house.

JustJam4Tea · 04/01/2022 07:43

Pay off mortgage, new car, nice holiday. invest for deposits for dh kids for a house.

Buy a tiny flat in London.

littlebilliie · 04/01/2022 07:56

@PermanentTemporary

Pay my father in law enough to cover my mother in law's nursing home fees. It would be such a tussle to get him to let me do that but I hope he would give in eventually. It's 1400 a week and she's been there over 2 years already.

Pay off my boyfriend's mortgage.

Get some major house works done i just can't afford rn - replace floors upstairs, replaster my bedroom, fitted storage in my bedroom, paint. Probably around £20k worth.

Talk to my boss about going part time again, though I doubt I could, there's so few of us at the moment.

Plan to retire at 60 not 67.

Get an electric bike.

Hire a personal trainer.

He shouldn't be paying the fees unless it's from her own money
AtillatheHun · 04/01/2022 08:36

@littlebilliie ha! You beat me to it! And the council will take over when her cash is spent so that would be a very poor use of the million. And that’s before we get into whether the in laws know about the boyfriend! (I hope that permanent temp gets some good advice when she wins her million)

littlebilliie · 04/01/2022 09:04

The local council will let anyone pay, I would investigate immediately and perhaps get an advocate involved

FrenchyQ · 04/01/2022 09:06

Buy a house with a bit of land so I can have chickens and pigs.

MaryBoBary · 04/01/2022 09:08

Go abroad on holiday for the first time in 13 years and then come back and buy a little small holding to rescue donkeys.
