Not that I have or anything!

Just interested in what folks would do with that amount of money!

I'd pay off the loan from my parents who used their inheritance to buy my flat.
Finish renovating my place indoors and out, give them some money to do the same.
Invest max in Premium bonds for my parents, brother, DD and myself. Ensure Dd had no student loans then step down from teaching and return to being a TA which I prefer much more, keep me busy, lower stress, long holidays to enjoy and takeout £20k a year to add to the pitiful TA wage, with no housing costs this should be more than enough and invest what I wasn't intending to use in the next 10 years in some sort of longish term savings.

I wouldn't buy anything extravagant, a large house would be wasted on just me when DD is older and leaves home. I would just want to make sure that she and my family were comfortable with no money worries.

Yes my mortgage is 'only' £82000 Which is small compared to many But not small for me unfortunately So I would pay that off at the most important

We can dream!

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/01/2022 23:23

Buy a good property.
Invest a chunk.
Plan some great travelling
Pay off my siblings small mortgage

Jabbawasarollingstone · 03/01/2022 23:23

Move out of my flat and buy a house in the countryside. Doesn't have to be posh, but a spacious semi with a garden and access to peace and quiet will do.
I'd put the rest on getting DD through uni, and saving the remainder for retirement.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 03/01/2022 23:23

Stop renting and buy a house. Buy a buy to let flat for kids investment. A campervan to take on holidays. Pay schools fees in advance. Buy bonds for my nieces and nephews. Start my dream project! I think I've spent the million twice by now. Grin

First I'd upgrade my car, never had a brand new one.

Then, put some in savings for the 4 DC and 3 GC.

Pay for someone to completely redecorate and modernise the house.

Erm...holiday probably.

Anything left into savings or something I suppose

KohlaParasaurus · 03/01/2022 23:33

DH and I will probably want to relocate in a few years' time, and having an extra million pounds to play with would make a big difference to our options. I don't think I'd be in a rush to change anything in the meantime and we don't need any stuff. Maybe we'd stay in more upmarket holiday homes or hotels when we go away, give our adult DC bigger cash sums for birthdays and Christmas, and make more generous charity donations.

LadyGAgain · 03/01/2022 23:33

Chunk into pension for early retirement (which a million wouldn't allow),
Kitchen/conservatory renovation
Garden cabin overhaul
Very decent holiday for our family
Chunk off mortgage
Save a bit for another amazing holiday or two.

80sMum · 03/01/2022 23:36

I would give it to my adult children. Half each.

MaryAndHerNet · 03/01/2022 23:40

Buy a plot of land, build a small environmentally sustainable and off grid cabin.

Buy 3 cheaper houses, rent them out to families on benefits and with pets for below market value to earn enough from them to cover expenses and pay me a little each month.

That's it. I'd spend my life enjoying my.land, growing stuff, making jams, caring for waif and stray animals, and avoiding as much human contact as is possible.

Thatsplentyjack · 03/01/2022 23:44

Build my own house or buy a nice big house (not massive) that I would want to live in forever. Invest a large chunk so I could retire early. Buy my mum a small house. Give my brother a deposit for a house and put a by a deposit for a house for each of my children.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 03/01/2022 23:49

Sell the current house, buy the house dh and I keep looking at, outright. Pay the car off, clear the credit cards. Put the rest in the savings, when we're allowed to, fly to the states for a couple of weeks to visit dh, take my parents, Spain to visit grandparents and Australia to see my best friend for the first time in 6 years, introduce her to ds and meet her twins.
That'd probably spend the lot.

StrifeOfBath · 03/01/2022 23:49

Move house (nothing lavish, just add a few 100K to what I have now, it’s more about the location)

Save / give Dc a chunk for a good deposit when the time is right

Use the rest to supplement my thrifty retirement prospects: some travelling, but I prefer adventure and seeing the natural world to expensive resorts snd ‘luxury’ so the money would go a fair way.

Kitkat151 · 03/01/2022 23:51

I would pay off my children’s mortgages.....have a big family holiday and put the rest in my savings

Treeroo · 03/01/2022 23:53

I’d try to spread the joy so our families could feel the security of owning their own homes, so nothing flash just average in a decent road. Do some much needed work to our own home and hopefully donate to local hospices.

IncessantNameChanger · 03/01/2022 23:55

A million wouldnt be enough for this, but I would build a secondary onto my sons SLCN school or set up a Special school for academic girls. We dont have either in my county.

PickAChew · 03/01/2022 23:57

500k on 90% House instead of the 80% one we're in. Rest in savings/pension. Probably a new car, too, as ours is 61 reg and getting a bit creaky. Probably use some of the money not going on a mortgage on a cleaner.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 04/01/2022 00:02

Buy my bungalow
New bathroom with one of those mega fancy showers
Loft conversion to make it into a 2 bedroom one
Buy a motorhome
Holiday in the Maldives with club class Plane tickets
Another Mazda estate car Cos I still haven't gotten over having to scrap mine

Hawkins001 · 04/01/2022 00:11

Keep it secret, and pretty much be the same as I am now, just that I can fully fund my hobbies and get a nice laptop, then rent a room or a small factory unit for my eBay business of selling cards.

SFHJ · 04/01/2022 02:20

Pay off mortgage 185k
Pay for extension 100k
Pay for a decorator as we just don’t have enough hours in the day and upgrade some furniture £20-30k
Set aside 50k per child to cover university tuition (invest it until time to send them to uni if they choose. (X2kids)
Set aside 5k per child for driving lessons and first car/costs
Top up my appalling pension
Pay for a proper honeymoon as nearly 9 years later still not had one. (10k)
Big family holiday (20k so we could do Disney/ Las Vegas etc)
Possibly look into a holiday home but doubt we would go ahead with that so invest it for retirement.

Kitkat151 · 04/01/2022 02:23

Wouldn’t be enough for what?
Snugglepumpkin · 04/01/2022 02:28

Start the business I plan to start after Easter next week.
Give a donation to charity.
Put a chunk in pension funds & investments.
Pay gardeners to help me sort out my garden.
Buy my dad an electric overblanket as I gave my mum one for Christmas & now they are squabbling over who gets to use it.
I did get my dad something else he loved, but obviously the heated blanket won gift of the year.

BasiliskStare · 04/01/2022 02:50

"£1m doesn't go far when you think about it "

Actually I think it does.

So paying off mortgage or buying a house/ flat if you want to instead of renting - the kitchen extension - giving DCs a leg up for with university or a deposit on a flat - rainy day fund for retirement or if job goes a bit tits up - you have resources.

What is does not do is get you a super yacht or a holiday house in Juan-les-Pin But then I am not sure I want either of those ( I am woman of modest tastes ) Grin

DropYourSword · 04/01/2022 03:47

Pay off the mortgage
Replace carpets
Update kitchen, bathroom and en-suite
Re-pave outside
Replace fences

Maybe I should just buy a new house!
