How much did you spend on maternity clothes?

Just curious, how much are you ladies spending on maternity clothes? I've spent about £380 - including a winter coat.

I didn't spend anything on maternity wear, didn't like it
Bought a few clothes in the next size up. Didn't even bother with maternity bras for the last pregnancy

Blahdyblahbla · 07/11/2021 19:34

I probably only spent about £150, but there are a group of us who seem to pass maternity clothes back and forth and add to them, its a bit like a lending library! I was mostly pregnant through the summers though, so never needed a coat.

Lemonsyellow · 07/11/2021 19:38

Nothing at all. I bought a normal dress one size up to attend a wedding. I wore my normal clothes otherwise. Trousers I wore undone at the waist but wore long tops to cover it. I had a few wrap dresses and they were also fine to wear.

68degreesnorth · 07/11/2021 19:43

I should add that my whole pregnancy (at least with a visible bump) is through October to end of March, so winter coat was essential.

About £200 but my spending included sports leggings, sports tops - I brought xx-large mens and gave them to my partner - and tights. (I wear tights in air conditioned offices as I feel cold.) I was heavily pregnant in summer so didn't need a coat and I got some tops of a friend.

Basically buy what you need.

HairyToity · 07/11/2021 19:44

About £15. Bought a bundle on ebay. Did me for both pregnancies.

Overthebow · 07/11/2021 20:01

Around £150 including dresses, everyday wear, work wear and swimwear. I bought a lot on eBay. A new winter coat isn’t essential, I got an extended zip that attached onto my usual coat that worked really well, cost £20.

CTR1000 · 07/11/2021 20:09

Prob about £400, but like you £150 of that was a winter/babywearing coat and lots of the rest should hopefully double as nursing wear if I’m able to BF.

Sounds a lot but I’d have spent the same on normal clothes in the same period I think.

Crumblinginside · 07/11/2021 20:13

I bought a lot. Basically jeans x 2
Work trousers x 4
About 5 work tops and then a good few casuals

One maxi dress and one good dress for a wedding. Then some basic t shirts from hm that lasted for breastfeeding.

I used them all for both pregnancies. Think the black dress is out on a scarecrow dh made for Halloween 🎃

Crumblinginside · 07/11/2021 20:14

The good black dress was 120 but the rest were cheap and to be honest I would have bought stuff to the same value regardless of pregnancy for the academic year.

Epli · 07/11/2021 20:15

So far ~£55 but I am only 17 weeks.

I tried buying used, but the condition of clothes is much poorer than in case of regular clothes (I purchase regularly on Vinted). My guess is that majority of people buy just 3-4 pieces and wear them constantly, hence visible wear. I will buy a bit more pieces ~Black Friday (I also have to buy a coat) and probably will end up spending ~£250-300.

toolazytothinkofausername · 07/11/2021 20:34

I think it depends what your job is.

I was an admin assistant so bought 1 pair of maternity smart trousers, 1 pair of maternity jeans, and a maternity swimming costume. I also bought pregnancy bras/nursing bras. All the other clothes I outgrew due to the growing bump were bought at Primark 2 sizes bigger than my regular size.

NatMoz · 07/11/2021 20:41

£0. My friend gave me hers!

68degreesnorth · 07/11/2021 23:21

I'm impressed with all of you!

At 16 weeks I had outgrown most of my clothes already (especially trousers) so was out emergency shopping in the only pair (lounging-at-home-pants) that still fitted me.

@CTR1000 I also bought one of those baby wearing coats, they're so lovely aren't they, and will get a lot of use after birth.

There's some lovely maternity clothes around, but what I really miss seeing is some good quality warm jumpers that's not made of acrylic. Might need to knit my own 🧶

Maybe 150, I was pregnant over the summer and bought everything on Shein, mostly summer dresses, leggings and nice tops. I liked most of what I got but I was so sick of everything by the end of my pregnancy. I gave birth 3 weeks ago and it's so great to have my full wardrobe back!

twoofusburningmatches · 08/11/2021 08:37

Had a winter pregnancy with first, but managed with my regular coat, warm jumpers, scarf and increased blood flow (which made the biggest difference). I reckon I spent about £100-£150 on maternity clothes though, largely because of work clothes (jeans x2, work trousers x2, a work dress, some vests, a couple of tops and leggings x1). This time round, I’ve only bought one pair of jeans and otherwise using the stuff from my first pregnancy and clothes I already have. I’m WFH though, so all the professional clothes have gone to waste!

KurtWilde · 08/11/2021 08:39

Nothing on actual maternity wear, I just bought regular things in a bigger size. Maternity wear is overpriced and most of it isn't something I'd ever want to wear style wise. I stuck to leggings and oversized T-shirt's/jumpers. Mind you all my babies are summer born so I didn't have much of a bump in the cold months and didn't need to buy a new winter coat.

SickAndTiredAgain · 08/11/2021 08:44

Couple of pairs of jeans, couple of work skirts, a few t shirts. Not much.
I’m a size 4, size 4 maternity clothes are few and far between.

PurBal · 08/11/2021 08:45

Too much. Wish I’d bought more versatile stuff (eg maternity and nursing) rather than just maternity though. I wore DH old coat.

Dinosaurus86 · 08/11/2021 08:57

Don’t worry @68degreesnorth, I probably spent a similar amount to you!

I started to outgrow my regular stuff at about 12 weeks and now at 38 weeks have only two dresses in my normal wardrobe that fit (and they are pulled up oddly).

I’ve bought maternity tights (old ones painfully tight) and a couple of pairs of leggings (I don’t normally wear them so not sure if regular ones would fit). I’ve bought a long top to go with them (also breastfeeding friendly).

Also bought maternity bras and knickers - outgrew my old bras by about 8/9 weeks…

I also bought a winter coat (but second hand from eBay) and a swimsuit. I’m almost due but don’t regret either of these; the coat will also be fine to wear post-pregnancy and is in great condition.

And I bought five dresses - two more summery and three more autumny. And one skirt.

For me, I’ve found these fit far better than just buying things in a larger size, but I think probably depends on your body shape to start with. I have very narrow shoulders and short arms, so am easily swamped. Definitely you could do it cheaper, but I’m planning to keep all this stuff for (hopefully) a second and then I’ll sell it on eBay afterwards.

Chippymunks · 08/11/2021 13:11

Not much but I had my DC in late May, August and October so could make do with a few dresses and didn’t need a coat.

PooWillyNameChange · 09/11/2021 13:46

I think around 150-200 for both pregnancies including bras, a maternity coat which turns into a baby wearing coat, a dress for a Christmas party (which I will wear again in December if I don't pop by then), some leggings and then the rest was secondhand bundles from Vinted or eBay.

PufferFishGoneWrong · 09/11/2021 13:49

I managed to get a huge bundle with my 2nd pregnancy for £30, some stuff were still new. It was a lot of stuff. Was very lucky.
No plans for anymore babies, but would make my own now.

stairgates · 09/11/2021 13:53

Nothing, jeans tucked derived bump and I wear oversized t shirts anyway.

stairgates · 09/11/2021 13:53

Tucked under bump, autocorrect!
