Would you take the job?

I've got the chance of a job Mon-Thu 9.30-2.30 so no childcare needed apart from in holidays. We currently get some UC that tops up my husbands wage. I'm currently a SAHM.

After deductions I'd be £120 better off with this job. That's it. UC will deduct so much from these extra earnings that's all the extra id have after paying rent that UC currently pays.

Would you take the job for £120 profit?

Yes. That's a cheap holiday over a year.

FindingMeno · 26/09/2021 21:29

£120 per ?

Asdf12345 · 26/09/2021 21:29

Yes, it’s not about £120 it’s about being able to look at yourself in the mirror.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/09/2021 21:33

I would definitely take it as long as I had some sort of plan for the school holidays.

ftw163532 · 26/09/2021 21:34

Yes.

FernGilly · 26/09/2021 21:34

Have you taken in to account how much you will need to pay for childcare in the holidays?

Will there be opportunities to increase you salary after you have worked there for a bit?

LIZS · 26/09/2021 21:34

Per week, per month?

Gncq · 26/09/2021 21:35

120 a day or week? Yes
120 a month fuck that.

MrsRobbieHart · 26/09/2021 21:35

Have you accounted for travel costs to and from work? And also holiday childcare? It may well wipe out your £120.

Jigsawprison · 26/09/2021 21:35

Yes because as your children get older you'll be able to increase these hours.
You'll also be able to pay into a pension.
Useful for your cv for future career progression.
Good role model for your children.
Could afford a holiday with extra money.
Good for your mental health.

bert3400 · 26/09/2021 21:36

When my kids were little, I worked 15 hours a week. The childcare was actually £50 more a month than what I earned ...but I loved working. It gave me my own identity and I was bloody good at my job. Sometimes it's not just about the money

ISeeTheLight · 26/09/2021 21:37

Yes because I'd see it as a long term investment into your career. And I would ALWAYS want to be able to earn money myself because you never know what's around the corner.

PinkFootstool · 26/09/2021 21:37

£120 month is probably still worth it. You're investing back into yourself for long term employment options etc.

Undervaluedandsad · 26/09/2021 21:38

Yes, it gets you into the job market, it works well round school hours, it will contribute to your pension, allow you to save some money and put you in a better position when your children are older and you want more hours/better job - it always easier to get a new job when you’re in one already.

mairiflowers · 26/09/2021 21:38

Yes of course, definitely take it! Working is about so much more than just money

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/09/2021 21:39

Thinking of the holidays, if you get 4 weeks a year and your DH does you can have 2 weeks off together 2weeks each for child care so that is 6 weeks covered .maybe GPs or other family can fill in so that any paid for childcare is minimised.

bigbluebus · 26/09/2021 21:39

Yes. Because benefits are there for those who really need them not for those who can work and earn their own money.

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:40

Sorry it's per month.

Also you will be making pension contributions, improving future employment chances, showing your DC that being "employed" is the expectation.

This ^^
NichyNoo · 26/09/2021 21:42

Of course. If you can work then you should. UC is there for people who have no choice, not for those who decide the profit margin isn’t worth it.

TheWholeWorld · 26/09/2021 21:42

Yeah because you should be thinking long term - that extra could be saved for a holiday, you could be promoted, you could take more hours when your kids go to school, you could get yourself a better paying job with the experience from this one, you'll be building a pension independent from your husband. Loads of reasons to take it apart from the £120.

ftw163532 · 26/09/2021 21:43

Still yes.

Ashitaka · 26/09/2021 21:44

Yes, because you'll be getting pension and experience

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:44

@bigbluebus please don't make out we are claiming benefits because we don't want to work. My husband works full time in a good role, I chose to be a SAHM long before UC was a thing. We were automatically put onto it and told what our entitlement was. I haven't claimed benefits because I'm lazy or work shy, yes they've helped slightly but because of my husbands wage we have never been given a great deal. I haven't been living the life of Riley with government money thank you
