Would you take the job?

I've got the chance of a job Mon-Thu 9.30-2.30 so no childcare needed apart from in holidays. We currently get some UC that tops up my husbands wage. I'm currently a SAHM.

After deductions I'd be £120 better off with this job. That's it. UC will deduct so much from these extra earnings that's all the extra id have after paying rent that UC currently pays.

Would you take the job for £120 profit?

You'll probably need that £120 per month to cover the rises in gas & electric SadAngry

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/09/2021 21:46

Yes because I don’t really loose any time with my children and that’s two of the 4 weekly food shops for me

Underbox · 26/09/2021 21:46

Yes, take the job. Those hours are highly sought after! Think longer term, promotions, experience etc. Go for it!

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:46

Ok thank you, all excellent points some of which I hadn't considered. I'm going to take the job, I'm really excited about the role and doing something other than cleaning and being a mum!

That's true @RandomMess 😭

Many years ago, I 'made' £48 a month after paying for childcare - I'd like to point out here that you should never just see your income but your partners too.

Now, because I worked I earn 52k. Okay, its not mega loads (I'm a social worker) but it's enough now I'm a single mum.
@bigbluebus please don't make out we are claiming benefits because we don't want to work. My husband works full time in a good role, I chose to be a SAHM long before UC was a thing. We were automatically put onto it and told what our entitlement was. I haven't claimed benefits because I'm lazy or work shy, yes they've helped slightly but because of my husbands wage we have never been given a great deal. I haven't been living the life of Riley with government money thank you
I didn't suggest that you were. But now that you have the opportunity to work and not claim benefits then that is the right thing to do.

ree348 · 26/09/2021 21:49

I would take the job for several reasons:

 • I'm still £120 better off per month
 • it doesn't affect the kids care after school
 • I will be contributing to my pension
 • not taking it, would mean a large gap in my cv and potentially a lot more difficult in getting a job later on down the line.
 • there could be (?) opportunity for salary to go up / be promoted over time.
 • would be great for confidence / self esteem

The downside is that you would need to find care for the kids during the holidays but you could use some annual leave/ paid help to cover yourself.

Akire · 26/09/2021 21:50

Yes was going say with gas and electric going up cost more than £30 week keep house warm over the winter. Hopefully you get help with childcare costs as can’t imagine you be able use both your holidays to cover that on exactly the holidays and half terms you need.

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:51

@bigbluebus UC is an income based benefit so I'd actually still get a small amount when I take this job anyway. Im not claiming the benefit in place of working. You get UC whether you work or not.

Usually yes, because of pension and prospect for greater income.

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:52

My parents said they will have the kids in the holidays so no childcare costs there either thankfully.

I work for nothing. What I earn just covers childcare (one in full time nursery, two in before and after school club and holiday childcare).
I do it because being at home full time drove me insane. And because I’m looking to the future… one day I won’t have to pay for childcare.
I say go for it.

FindingMeno · 26/09/2021 21:56

No childcare costs in the holidays, then definitely take it!
Exciting!!!

MonicaGellerBing · 26/09/2021 21:57

Thanks everyone! Excited to start. Now for work clothes shopping....!

We don’t get any UC so that doesn’t factor in our calculations, but we’re still only breaking even with me working.

I'm well aware of what universal credit is. But you asked the question - should I work for only £120 extra? ie.the alternative being, I assume, stay at home and let the state continue to pay you/ your DH the increased amount of universal credit. I gave you my opinion - you have the option to earn the money for yourself, so that is the right thing to do if you are able to.

Akire · 26/09/2021 22:03

Great to work if you can, nobody knows what future holds. Your Dh could be too ill work tomorrow and you have start working from scratch or you could end up being single parent and having job history is major advantage. The way the economy is going every little helps!

Chewbecca · 27/09/2021 09:20

Great news, hope the job is fab.

S&B board is ready and waiting to help with all your clothing needs.

shivawn · 27/09/2021 21:05

I would take it but I'm somebody who loves to be out working and being employed has great mental health benefits for me. £120 a month would sting more than a little though, not gonna lie! Still, it could lead on to other great things for you. Only you can say whether it's worth it or not but it sounds like you've decided to take it so best of luck and I hope it goes well for you! Smile
