Anyone interested in a YNAB chat/support thread?

Hi,

I wondered if anyone was interested in a YNAb thread to chat about progress and help each other. I've just started the trial period a couple of weeks ago and, although it's quite a steep learning curve I'm really impressed with it.
I'm freelance so it's important for me to track money and be prepared for fallow periods. I had a thread here with some great advice. I'll add it as there are some good links www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legal_money_matters/4327812-YNAB-help-for-a-freelancer?watched=1&msgid=110514876#110514876

Anyone up for some YNAB chat/support?

Thank you so much @WouldBeMrMicawber, that's solved the URL problem. I still can't see the reconcile button, but I'll keep looking.

BertieBotts · 07/02/2024 17:48

On web - go into the page for the bank account - e.g. "Horse Bank" where you can see all the recent transactions only for that one account.

At the top right of that page (sort of on the account header banner if that makes sense?) there is a blue button on the right saying Reconcile.

h0rsewithn0name · 07/02/2024 19:56

Thank you @BertieBotts . It wasn't there, but I've tinkered with the menu and hooray, it's appeared!

MrsWombat · 15/02/2024 19:48

Payday today.

There are now 2 months' worth of contributions in all the sinking funds I've created for Christmas, Birthdays, and all the named bills that have come up so far, which has helped my Age of Money reach 28 days.

I'm not doing so with sinking funds for vague stuff like holidays that have not been organised yet or imaginary car repairs.

I finally feel like I am beginning to dig myself out of a hole financially. YNAB is defintiely heling but also just that I wasn´t earning enough when I was self employed, especially in the last 18 months or so.
Employed now with a steady income and starting to get on top of things. YNAB helping a lot with that.

Thank you for this 😊 I'd let my membership stop because I wasn't using it properly. I've just done some reading and watched some videos and started again properly.

I'm not linking my banks this time as I think that was where I got into a mess last time.

BlastedSkreet · 17/02/2024 08:34

Welcome @HouseofHolbein , I haven’t had any issues with linking bank accounts, but I know that credit cards can be tricky. I also tried YNAB several years ago but couldn’t make it work for me, I don’t know what is changed this time but I started six months ago and something really clicked - It’s been a real game changer for us.

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun i’m glad you are digging yourself out of a hole - more income definitely helps!

We have had an expensive month which wasn’t really expected and I have had to do a lot of wamming. Car insurance (I’d budgeted for this) and then unexpected car breakdown cover (I have now put this in the budget for next year ..).. a family funeral a long way away that cost a couple of hundred in petrol and accommodation, and the deposit for summer holiday 2025.

So yet again, I feel broke! And rollover day is still 12 long days away. I have nothing left on the spendable budgets, so it feels like a long wait till 1st March!

My age of money is now 54 days, with 43 days of buffering.

HouseofHolbein · 21/02/2024 07:36

Oh I'm impatient 🤣🤣 have assigned some money into next months bills. Just waiting for payday (Friday) to add the rest. Age of money is currently 1 day 😭😭 hopefully that will increase soon.

I've even fired up my ancient laptop to get the full experience 😊

Quick question - where do you find the buffering information? I'm assuming I can't see it yet because I've only just restarted...

Hi, wondering if someone can help me please. Really keen to get started but when I go to the app or webpage it's signing me up at 14.99 dollars per month. I can't seem to locate the UK version. Any help appreciated!

YNAB is always charged in USD. You can choose a monthly or yearly subscription.

I get a 10% legacy discount because I had YNAB4, which was a standalone software before they changed to a subscription model. My yearly charge was taken this month and was $89.09, which worked out to be £73.12. The standard yearly charge is $99, which works out at £78.50 at the moment.

herewego9 · 21/02/2024 11:17

Ah thanks! And is 14.99 a month standard?

Lougle · 21/02/2024 11:21

You save $80 per year if you take the yearly option.

Thanks so much for your help, really appreciate it. Off to sign up!

Lougle · 21/02/2024 11:26

You won't regret it!

BertieBotts · 21/02/2024 17:54

I did the monthly pay for my first couple of months as wasn't sure if I wanted to commit, but went for the yearly after 2-3 months.

If you have a student ID or student email contact support and you get a year free. Apparently they honour this even if you have already been paying for it.

HouseofHolbein · 23/02/2024 07:58

Wages are in 😊 (I get paid 4 weekly) all bills and expenses for march are now covered and I have added a bit to a couple of savings pots. Very satisfying 😊

BlastedSkreet · 26/02/2024 21:15

@HouseofHolbein i swear I get as much satisfaction from allocating my funds on the first of the month as I used to get from spending it 😆
Still hanging in here - payday on 28th after an expensive month. But at least not too long to wait after that till rollover day on 1st!

HouseofHolbein · 27/02/2024 07:57

Have to say I love getting paid 4 weekly it rolls around so fast! And 2 paydays in November this year 😊

My aim is to make my 4 weeks pay last the month then the extra pay can go for something nice 😊

Also next month I will be getting my first help to save bonus which is exciting 😊

JackieWeaversZoomAc · 28/02/2024 11:50

wow I can't imagine getting 2 monthly pays in a month - bliss.

I have a 5 week pay "month" ahead. I need to keep an eye on grocery spending but apart from that I'm all good.

FranklynDawg · 29/02/2024 21:34

Has anyone else been confused by the extra day this month? I've randomly had a couple of bills go out today which are usually the 1st which I'd already assigned for March and it messed my figures up!

My age of money was 14 for February when it's been 15 for the past few months which has ruined the straight line on the graph, even though my net worth is the highest it's ever been since I started in October. All because February is a short month....

I've also had a couple of direct debits come out on the 29th instead of the 1st which is really irritating.

moreenjackson · 03/03/2024 14:29

Hi all, newbie to YNAB here and in the midst of the learning curve. A steep one for me as I have adhd!
@FranklynDawg - YES! My big bills this month e.g. Mortgages that comes out on the 1st direct debit now show as a big red overspend on my budget sheet 😰. Not sure why. My account is positive (after these big bills were deducted already on the 1st March) and the remaining positive figure is fully allocated across all other categories (give every dollar a job!) in such a way that the 'ready to assign' figure at the top is Zero. I can't fund in full all my targets this month but always make sure bills and non-negotiable savings (i.e. school fees) are always on track - so green. Then the rest stay yellow until we hopefully, with the help of YNAB, get back on track. So what's going on this month? I can't figure it out but suspect it is related to the extra day and possibly a glitch.

moreenjackson · 03/03/2024 14:32

Forgot to ask, has anyone used the 1-1 YNAB certified coaching service? Did you find it helpful/worth the extra money?
Thanks

SparrowFeet · 04/03/2024 18:03

Downloaded this the other day.
I've linked my bank accounts - for those that do - do you find that it picks up expenses that you add manually and doesn't double count them? I'm probably getting ahead of myself but it doesn't clear the transactions as fast as I'd like so I want to be able to manually add without it messing up the whole thing.

I really like to concept and already have seen that I'm going to need to take some money from savings as I'm just not being realistic about what I'm spending and then using credit, whilst also putting money into a savings account - a good position to be in but pretty stupid! Cancelled some subscriptions in an attempt to balance the books as well.

@moreenjackson I don't think I'll go for the coaching unless I get in a complete mess. Want to see how things go for a couple of months first but interested in what others think.

Lougle · 04/03/2024 18:07

@SparrowFeet yes if the name is similar. If they use a third party charging company it can get confused but it's easy to spot the duplicate.
