I’m a bit stressed as spilt from partner recently have found a rental but is £1000 per month have got it as nothing else around, but now I’m a single parent self employed earning about £900 a month tried doing the online calculators but doesn’t give much information, hopefully claiming through UC won’t know how much until I’m in! Can anyone in similar situation tell me how much roughly a month from what I can see is £400 housing benefit? I have 2 young children as well.

Depends on the local housing allowance rate in your area, but unless you’re in London where LHA is around thr 900 mark you won’t get the full rent paid

Kerplunkk · 23/08/2021 18:17

There is a Facebook group, universal credit essentials that is helpful, but you’ll have to do the calculations yourself with the web page they link and then ask them to verify if it looks about right

Mum330 · 23/08/2021 18:19

Thanks, yes I know it won’t be all paid but at least need £400 thank you will look that up.

Use the calculator on turn2us - in the housing section it will ask you your postcode and how much rent. Put in what you are likely to have to pay and it will apply the LHA automatically and tell you how much UC you might get.

In your position I’d also apply to go on the council housing register

Mum330 · 23/08/2021 18:23

In my local area covers 667 rent but they obviously take wages into account?

The entitled to calculator should tell you how much universal credit you get and how much of that will be housing benefit.

Mum330 · 23/08/2021 18:35

Ok thank you.

For rent element you will receive whatever the local housing allowance rate is for the number of bedrooms you are entitled to claim for.
Whatever earnings are reported to HMRC in your monthly assessment period will be counted. If you are paid weekly, two weekly or four weekly this will mean you won't get the same amount of Uc each month.
You take your monthly net earnings, take away £293 work allowance and multiply by 0.63. This is the amount that is deducted from your total Uc for wage deductions.

Did you own a house with your ex? If so the capital in the home can be disregarded for a while if the house is being sold.

Mum330 · 23/08/2021 19:00

Ok thanks baby Roos, no he owns house in his name.

Use this calculator. It’s the easiest.

www.betteroffcalculator.co.uk/calculator/new/step1

CornishTiger · 23/08/2021 19:10

And look at the self employed guidance regarding UC. www.gov.uk/self-employment-and-universal-credit

CornishTiger · 23/08/2021 19:13

You really need to work out your self employed income first and what is going to be your earnings figure.
