Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't sure where it should go but is financially related.

I got married 3 years ago. Always intended to take DH name but haven't legally changed it on anything ( other than Facebook)

All my cards / bank and work is in my current maiden name.

We are currently in the process of remortgaging as have reached the end of our current deal. We use a broker.

A few days ago one of my credit cards sent me a new card in my married name. I have not requested a name change. The next day another followed I called the companies and spoke to the fraud team to get an idea why it was requested and they have no idea they are absolutely baffled . They are confident it's not fraud but that something is prompting it they are still investigating.

I have racked my brains but cannot think of anything I have submitted in my married name that would prompt my card company to change my name. I don't use that name.

Today the mortgage advisor has got in touch to say that the application made in my maiden name has been rejected but my married name was accepted . He now needs proof I've changed my name for the mortgage company.. only I haven't changed my name . He wants a letter from my work confirming my identity only again work don't know me in that name ! It's a nightmare. I can obviously on Monday start the ball rolling with all that.

My main question is has anyone ever heard anything like this or anyone got any ideas what on earth I have completed that has promoted my name to change automatically? So stressed and confused.

I still don’t think that explains it. It’s still incredibly dodgy.

Agree, you sign the marriage certificate in your maiden name. Anyway, a marriage certificate is proof enough of a name change.

Feelinghothothottoday · 28/05/2021 23:44

Dont think that explains it at all.

LJC1234 · 29/05/2021 05:01

@MrsRockAndRoll

I was told to sign my marriage certificate in my maiden name regardless of whether I was planning to change my name.

I still don't think that explains the mortgage application - I would expect a broker to credit search etc in the correct name. It also doesn't explain why the credit card name change took place

No your absolutely right on the credit cards they should never have been changed and Intend to take that complaint as far as I can.

So I'm glad that you all think that does not explain it at all as friend was convinced marriage certificate was enough proof for broker and it still felt weird to me and I felt so dim for not realising that was enough proof.

What a week it's been so stressful and I imagine only just started on the stress .

I just wanted to come back to update in case anyone is interested . Currently waiting on our re mortgage to complete . Everything has gone through in my wrong name that's now my name.

I changed my name with my bank and work to be able to provide proof and thus far that has been enough for everyone as I can now prove i am both people.

We are still so annoyed with the whole situation but waiting on the mortgage to be in place before we complain up which I know many people won't agree with but the mortgage we have got is such a good deal that we really need it

If this is Halifax/Bank of Scotland/Scottish widows/Lloyds - I had something similar. I had a Halifax card with title Ms, then joined new company pension with Scottish Widows, they set it up as Mrs - triggering a new Halifax card to be issued as Mrs.

I was outraged. Why was Mrs presumed correct? My preference was Ms!

I was just coming on to say same re Halifax and Lloyds. They are same company and some records are linked. I changed my address at Halifax which was immediately picked up at Lloyds. Not that this explains why your name was ever changed on the application but may explain a possible link.
