Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't sure where it should go but is financially related.

I got married 3 years ago. Always intended to take DH name but haven't legally changed it on anything ( other than Facebook)

All my cards / bank and work is in my current maiden name.

We are currently in the process of remortgaging as have reached the end of our current deal. We use a broker.

A few days ago one of my credit cards sent me a new card in my married name. I have not requested a name change. The next day another followed I called the companies and spoke to the fraud team to get an idea why it was requested and they have no idea they are absolutely baffled . They are confident it's not fraud but that something is prompting it they are still investigating.

I have racked my brains but cannot think of anything I have submitted in my married name that would prompt my card company to change my name. I don't use that name.

Today the mortgage advisor has got in touch to say that the application made in my maiden name has been rejected but my married name was accepted . He now needs proof I've changed my name for the mortgage company.. only I haven't changed my name . He wants a letter from my work confirming my identity only again work don't know me in that name ! It's a nightmare. I can obviously on Monday start the ball rolling with all that.

My main question is has anyone ever heard anything like this or anyone got any ideas what on earth I have completed that has promoted my name to change automatically? So stressed and confused.

@mynameisigglepiggle

You shouldn't need to change your name. I'm not sure how a mortgage can be refused in your maiden name then approved in your married name given it should go off financial eligibility. If it's just the fact that you are married then your marriage certificate proves that - you don't need to change your name!
That's what we are so confused about. I've also never failed a credit check! It's all so bizarre

@gmailconfusion2

I had this by nationwide. 'the more works is a subsidery of them, and by me submitting my details for them to be our broker apparently this meant they could automatically update the names on all my accounts with nationwide wide, without telling me, meaning I couldn't access my account over the phone. I took paperwork, I shouted, and they refused to change it back. The financial ombudsman was no help so I shut my accounts and left.
Oh that's so annoying! I think Halifax will change it back as I've raised a complaint with them but obviously I don't know if the will accept the mortgage in my maiden name

Thank you so much for all your replies everyone!

We still are so baffled and also stressed.

I also think the fault is with our broker and the Halifax mortgage application but we need to wait to speak to him on Monday which is equally stressful

Muchmorethan · 22/05/2021 18:04

What's the reason it was refused in your maiden name?

LJC1234 · 22/05/2021 18:12

@Muchmorethan

What's the reason it was refused in your maiden name?
I don't think one was given just that married name was accepted.. it was late Friday and via email so we are going to call Monday morning and find out what's actually going on.

I have run credit reports this morning via Experian and my names still my maiden name .

gmailconfusion2 · 22/05/2021 22:03

@LJC1234 I raised a complaint, and got told it was protocol to only have one name per a customer, they stood by it, they had no name change request as I hadn't done one, no documentation in married name, all in maiden name, but despite this they refused to change it back. I hope you have better luck

The GDPR requires data controllers and data processors to hold accurate data ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/principles/accuracy/

Nationwide’s privacy policy www.nationwide.co.uk/about/corporate-information/cookies-and-privacy/how-we-use-your-information#xtab:your-information-rights is clear ‘your information rights’ point 2 states you have a right to ask them to correct your information by filling out this form portal.nationet.com/forms/Bespoke/GDPR/SARS?sr=rec

I would also look for your mortgage advisors privacy policy as it will have a similar process.

gmailconfusion2 · 23/05/2021 09:25

@margaritatime thanks, I filled out that form, they said because it had been entered into the mortgage works they held correct information, mortgage broker said they shouldn't have done it a d he hadn't asked them to. I had been a customer. For 30 years. Basically it was a case of we don't give a monkey and not backing down. I've already shit my account as this was during a horrendous pregnancy last year and I just didn't have the energy to keep fighting

Margaritatime · 23/05/2021 11:32

Then you need to ask the mortgage broker to submit correct information.

If neither are willing to correct the data then email ICO and lodge a complaint and copy to the DPO of each organisation.

Margaritatime · 23/05/2021 11:34

I meant to say, sorry this is an additional worry at a difficult time.

Ostara212 · 23/05/2021 11:36

Did you actually see the application put in by the mortgage broker?

It sounds like the most likely source of the error but surely s/he must have shown it to you or even you had to sign it?

Horehound · 23/05/2021 11:36

I too wk series about your husband.
Could he have done a new form without you?
I would ask the mortgage guy why he used your married name since even though yiuyare married, you didn't change your name.
I feel a complaint is looming here. Have they just assumed to use a different name? Also you have to apply bank statements to prove your affordability and those would be on your maiden name so why would your maiden name have been rejected.

Nah, something fishy is going on.

Horehound · 23/05/2021 11:40

Op, if they reject it in your miaden name id be raising a big hoo ha on twitter. Copying in women's rights groups etc.
The fact you can't get a mortgage without having the same last name as a man...could open a big can of worms for them...and quite right too!!

Me and DH (BF) at the time got out mortgage with Halifax and I had my maiden name and that went through fine.

AmberIsACertainty · 23/05/2021 12:00

I'm confused reading this post about what your name actually legally is. When you got married, lots of women change their name at the same time to match their husbands name, but not everyone does this. So did you do this or not? Because if you didn't then you don't even have a "married name" so they'd literally be asking you to change your identity from scratch. I wouldn't do it, I think they're being unreasonable. If they won't change it back I'd do what the other poster said and close the accounts and get new accounts and a different mortgage with someone else. I wouldn't go along with it. Why should that mortgage broker, who is undoubtedly on some sort of commission for making sales, get rewarded for messing up your life and forcing you to change your identity? It's disgusting behaviour.

LJC1234 · 23/05/2021 15:00

Sorry for the confusion! Nope not legally changed my name but it's what my name would be should I have.

I think the mortgage broker is also the issue . All forms we submitted and signed have been in my maiden name all pay slips and bank statements in my maiden name.

It's just so stressful that it's all come to light over a weekend to! We will call them first thing to try and see what mortgage broker says to explain it but I'm really really thankful for all the advice on here. The link is Halifax in all of it .

I will of course update tommorrow 😀

Fingers crossed it gets sorted asap

Londonmummy66 · 23/05/2021 19:03

My gut instinct is that it is probably slightly easier to get a mortgage as a married couple than as two unmarried partners. I wonder if the first application was sent in as if you were not married and was rejected. If the mortgage advisor then asked why and was told you were very close to acceptance and found out that reapplying as a married couple would square that circle he might have then submitted the application as Mr & Mrs to get it through quickly. Halifax are bound to have looked at your history with them (ie your behaviour on the credit cards) so those accounts will have been flagged up and linked to your application on the system and the name change has occurred as the system is probably only set up to have one name for a person to comply with money laundering protocols.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/05/2021 19:11

Really? That sounds ludicrous in this day and age.

But our last re mortgage we were exactly the same and we had no issues getting the mortgage which is ridiculous.

Nine of them seem to realise or care what they've done. Tell the mortgage broker they've applied for and approved a mortgage for a person who doesn't exist. You're not Mrs Husband's Name, you're you. Tell the credit card etc they've changed your name to someone else's who doesn't exist and they've done it without your knowledge or consent.

AmberIsACertainty · 24/05/2021 00:32

*none. I bloody hope there's not nine of the idiots involved!

eurochick · 24/05/2021 10:34

I hope you get this sorted. What a mess!

LJC1234 · 24/05/2021 11:03

Thanks everyone it's now 11.05 and we can't get hold of mortgage advisor at all. Hoping he calls us back ASAP

OP posts:
Ostara212 · 24/05/2021 11:23

Hopefully...usually a block in the system prompts a call back
