Who do you tip?

I tend to give my hairdresser and the person washing my hair a couple of quid each. I also give a Christmas tip to the milkman. I leave tips in sit down restaurants.

However, I wondered what other people tip for. What about for beauty treatments? or say the window cleaner?

Just curious really. I don't begrudge giving tips at all but I can't really afford to give money away willy nilly.

I don’t tip routinely but do for good service in some industries that pay poorly.
Usually hairdresser £10, restaurant staff we do a percentage of the bill.
Taxi drivers round up fare. Hotel housekeeping, doorman, concierge and bellboy staff depending on length of stay.

Longshoremen at end of the week.

Christmas it’s dustmen, cleaners, logboy, and postman.

Kelvingrove · 21/04/2021 20:29

What does a longshoreman do? Also, what is a log boy? I may have lived a sheltered life!

Ohnomoreno · 21/04/2021 20:30

Milk man, post man, waiters if they're good. Given up tipping the hairdresser, handing over a fiver on top of 200 quid feels dumb.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/04/2021 20:32

I only tip waiters and the staff in our local park cafes (change in the tip jar), as they are so nice.
Services like hair etc cost enough, I don’t need to tip.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 21/04/2021 20:34

Don’t tip.
See hairdresser regularly and was one of the first they contacted after lockdown do seems okay by them not to tip.

LemonRoses · 21/04/2021 20:37

Logboy delivers and stacks logs.
Longshoremen manage the beach - sorts a beach hut for us, deckchairs, gets some crab put by, gives us wi fi passwords. I think in US they are more dock workers, but here they hold the beach tender. Ours is actually a women we’ve known for decades.

minniemomo · 21/04/2021 20:38

Rarely. I tip taxi drivers if they have got to my house cheapish but not if they go the long way, good restaurants with service up to scratch but not hairdressers etc as they fees are so high now (why dies the salon charge 3x as much for women than men???)

Maggiesfarm · 21/04/2021 20:39

I have groceries delivered and tip the driver. I would tip a hairdresser and beauty therapist but don't go to them. I tip taxi drivers. The milkman and post person get a good tip at Christmas.

rainbowthoughts · 21/04/2021 20:41

If you taxi driver is going the long way you should be taking their number and reporting them to the licensing authority.

Just in Restaurants

roses2 · 21/04/2021 21:47
  • restaurants but usually because its the done thing not because I want to

These people I tip because I want to:

  • food delivery driver
  • I pay my cleaner an extra 15% each week as she's already cheap
  • my babysitter I round up each week. Today she was a superstar keeping screaming DS out of the way whilst I had an important work call
SwimBaby · 21/04/2021 21:50

Hairdressers
Not beauticians
Waiting staff
Not cab drivers.

ladyinacampervan · 21/04/2021 22:48

I don't tip my hairdresser - she earns way more an hour than I do and I'm a social worker! (I know how much she earns as she told me she just haggled a pay rise).

I tip at restaurants when it's been good. Not much else!

Maggiesfarm · 21/04/2021 22:48

Oh yes, I tip in restaurants, I'd forgotten about that.

ChampagneWorries · 21/04/2021 22:57

I don’t tip anyone

Kelvingrove · 22/04/2021 06:57

@LemonRoses Thankyou for replying. If a longshoreman ever sorts out crab and a beach hut for me I will certainly tip them. Likewise a log boy.

idontlikealdi · 22/04/2021 12:27

I too for good service in a restaurant otherwise I don't tip anyone.

SweatyBetty20 · 22/04/2021 23:23

Round up at restaurants and in taxis if the service is good - always give cash to waiters, don’t put it on the credit card. Give my window cleaner £20 at Christmas - he and his lad are out in all weathers as where I live is really rainy.

Shelddd · 23/04/2021 03:42

Hate tipping customs. I will tip hairdresser but only because I go to a cheap one who does a better job than most expensive ones I've been too.
As far as restaurants go, i don't tip. Almost all of them add service charge in london though so I'm forced to tip in 95% of restaurants.

Seafog · 23/04/2021 04:20

Anyone providing a service I could do myself, so good servers, hair dresser, newspaper kid, guy who cuts the lawns, etc

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/04/2021 07:28

I don’t tip the hairdresser either. Given how much it costs for a couple of hours work I see absolutely no need. I don’t see any difference between paying for a service and shopping so see no need to tip.

I do tip waiting staff in restaurants and when on holiday as it’s the done thing,

HeronLanyon · 23/04/2021 07:37

Taxis. Hairdresser and hair washer. Waiters. Bin men/food delivery close to Christmas. Anyone who has had to haul something large (fridge washing machine) up my stairs.

CeibaTree · 23/04/2021 11:05

Only restaurant staff really, and usually round taxi fares up to the nearest £.

HollowTalk · 23/04/2021 11:13

I was thinking just yesterday how people delivering takeaways must have lost out on tips this year because nobody has cash on them now.

LeibnizQueen · 23/04/2021 11:19

I always tip a take away driver. I don't like to order if don't have some coins to tip.
