Anyone thinking of doing something similar?

I want to try to dramatically reduce spending next year and buy less stuff, as don’t really need anything and what I do need (will need clothes for biggest boy etc) try to get second hand.

Thanks for the support. I haven't done great today with spending bought £15 of seeds in the supermarket which is fine because we are keen gardeners and we will use them but then got carried away and bought seed trays and onion sets not really needed. Hopefully can just keep trying to be more careful.

devildeepbluesea · 11/01/2021 07:25

Spent £26.99 on new crystal wine glasses last night. DSis bought me some for Christmas but I've already smashed 3 out of 4 😞😞😞 I am absolutely terrible with lovely glasses. Will really have to try harder this time.

Still £23 under for the week and I shouldn't need to spend any more.

FiveShelties · 11/01/2021 08:35

Can I join please? I have so much stuff and just keep buying even more stuff to go with it. I have spent $180 (90GBP) so far this year on supermarket shopping, much of that needed as we had friends round on 3rd January for dinner. Not breaking lockdown as in NZ.

Hoping to spend nothing on clothes and very little on cosmetics - that is the plan anyway.

AdoraBell · 11/01/2021 15:50

Nothing spent today.

devildeepbluesea · 11/01/2021 16:52

£9.87 on stamps and a bit of a top up. £13 under for the week. Tomorrow needs to be a NSD

devildeepbluesea · 13/01/2021 19:42

Bump! I may need a little encouragement!

£25 yesterday in Tesco on mainly impulse buys.
£31 in Aldi today including stuff for DF. About £81 left for the week, DD will pay for the Sunday shop. Need fuel though.

devildeepbluesea · 13/01/2021 19:42

DF not DD. DD is 7, I wouldn't expect her to pay for the shopping!

ivykaty44 · 14/01/2021 19:58

ive not spent anymore since the pillow slip on Saturday, so that was £3.45 along with the phonebook postage (the photobook itself was free ) for £5.99 & £34 on food shopping

that was until I spent a whopping £92 in Sainsbury for food.

Have started another order for next week, but it just sitting at £41

I did order some bit D spray for both me and dd which was £10 and coffee £22 (cheaper than Starbucks )

£0 on fuel and half a tank left which will do me till the end of the month now

AdoraBell · 14/01/2021 20:12

I haven’t spent anything this week. I have groceries due on Saturday but don’t need anything else.

suzieduh · 14/01/2021 21:35

I spent £8 yesterday, making a total of £18 on non-essential non-grocery items this month.

Just before Christmas I received an email from Mumsnet saying I'd won a £150 gift card after filling out a survey and being drawn out of a hat. I was convinced it was a scam. But no! It's arrived today so that will mean we can save £150 on groceries next month. OH is delighted Grin

Begonias · 14/01/2021 21:51

I've just stumbled upon this thread and I'm eager to join. I really need curb my spending and start saving for an emergency fund. So far this week I've spent £43.51 on groceries. I have £91 to last till the end of the month. Thankfully all bills have been paid so it's just food.

devildeepbluesea · 15/01/2021 06:57

Hi Begonias, I'm quite new too. This thread helps me stay accountable.

I miscalculated this week's budget. Spent £25 on mainly impulse stuff on Tue(naughty) which took me £12 over budget for last week. Wed was a new week, £31 in Aldi. £20 fuel yesterday. £37 left til my new week next Wed but I can't see me needing anything else so I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can actually go under budget this week!

LucyLane · 16/01/2021 16:45

When i get the urge to buy something as a nice treat, I log on to the library website and order myself a free book!
I'm pleased they are open for Click & Collect- literally on the library doorstep.

ivykaty44 · 16/01/2021 19:31

Still on no spend today, so doing well.

Not going to shops staying home or walking for daily exercise.

Making sure I take lunch to work and snacks, so no temptation to pop to shops.

Spent an hour tonight peeping all food for next 4/5 days.

2 weeks to go

Begonias · 16/01/2021 19:48

I nearly spent £10 at superdrug online, them asked myself do I really need more perfume? And the answer was no. I'm so pleased I managed to stop myself. So another no spend day. Yayyyy

AdoraBell · 16/01/2021 21:01

Well done Begonias 👍

Only groceries today, £70. I cannot buy anything unnecessary this month as DH’s birthday is on the 27th

Sharonthecat · 18/01/2021 07:25

Room for a late joiner please? I went through my December spend yesterday and discovered I'd frittered away a few hundred quid on crap/impulse purchases we really could have survived without!
I want to save as much as possible this year, mostly to pay back debt more quickly but I'd also love a new floor in the living room to replace our chipped and badly laid one!

AdoraBell · 18/01/2021 22:24

Always room here Sharonthecat welcome aboard.

I spent £13 today on a top up shop, DH asked me to get TCP and the bloody plastic cap split in the bag, I had to throw a loaf of bread out. Luckily I had an empty glass bottle to put the horrid stuff in so it doesn’t evaporate.

KilljoysDutch · 18/01/2021 23:00

I was watching a youtube video yesterday and in it the woman mentioned a purchase notebook, she wrote down all the things she wanted to buy and why she wanted to buy them. I'm going to be trying it because it will hopefully stop impulse buys if I really have to explain why I'm planning on buying something and justify it.

AdoraBell · 20/01/2021 22:58

£41 yesterday, birthday present for DH. I need to buy a card but I’m not going out until this weather passes.

Also £50 on jeans, 2 pairs, for DD1. She’s a student and has no money.

devildeepbluesea · 22/01/2021 08:06

£40 on Wed for shopping at Lidl. Also £10 on a new iPad cable, so £50 left til Tuesday. I'll need to shop for top ups on Sunday, but hopeful that I'll be under my £100 this week.

Did a quick comparison of December Vs January spends the other day. I know it was a high-spend month anyway, but even so..by 21 Dec I'd spent about £600. This month I'm hovering around £200. I'm on track to reduce my spending by about £500 this month. If I can carry on like this for a good few months I reckon I can save a couple of grand by early summer. Insane how I would fritter cash away.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 22/01/2021 10:38

Right, I’m joining too. Excellent to have support in this. Really want to clear our mortgage early, so need to stop buying clothes.

Sharonthecat · 22/01/2021 17:58

Similar story for me @devildeepbluesea - I checked my bank account and in December I spent around £600 on 'stuff', mainly on Amazon. I'm sure some of it was for Christmas, but I'd struggle to tell you how much and what for.
I'm allowing myself a book or a candle each week for now and will see how this month compares to last!

devildeepbluesea · 22/01/2021 18:03

It's insane isn't it @Sharonthecat?!

£5.19 on stuff we didn't really need, but I can live with that. £45 left til Wed. And I also have £4.50 in cash in my purse which I'm not counting because it's already "out there", as it were.

Sharonthecat · 23/01/2021 13:54

Spent £15 on some decent waterproof gloves for my son today. He needs them as he has excema on his hands but also loves to play in the snow! I'm determined now that I will remain spend free until next Friday. If I get there I'll treat myself to a new book 😀.
This week I also made sure I got some 'treats for DS in the weekly shop - this way I should avoid nipping into the shop for a tube of smarties and exiting with £12 worth of crap.........
