Inheritance to share or not to share

My aunt died with no husband or children. She left a will and I am the only beneficiary.
I did not know how much she left me and I told my sister (also my aunt's niece but they did not get along very well) that I would have shared the money with her.
When we went to the bank we found out that the amount my aunt left was nearly £250.000, I decided to give my sister £90.000 and to keep the rest for myself.
She is now very upset with me and does not understand that my circumstances since I told her the 50/50 thing have changed. I lost my job due to Covid-19 and at the moment my incomes are lower than my outcomes. Her economic situation is not much better than mine but at least she has got 2 grownup children (27 and 23 still leaving with her) while my Dd is still 12.
I feel sad as this is the most selfish act I have ever done.

I suppose you've only kept £35 k more for yourself. Was there a particular reason it was all left to you ??

PanamaPattie · 23/10/2020 20:08

How did your sister sort out her tax situation with such a large cash gift? I'm surprised she's moaning. I wouldn't share an inheritance with anyone! Never a good deed goes unpunished OP.

Throughabushbackwards · 23/10/2020 20:09

You sister needs to realise that she is not actually entitled to anything as she wasn't named in the will. She's lucky you were kind enough to give her the 90k under the circumstances, she seems to me to be the selfish one.

positivelynegative · 23/10/2020 20:10

I assume you mean £250k OP?

Babyroobs · 23/10/2020 20:11

I guess unless you are already on tax credits, this kind of sum is going to rule you both out of any kind of means tested benefits so will have to be used to live off until you find another job.

Sunnydaysstillhere · 23/10/2020 20:11

Is it too late to give her naff all??

Whats the tax situation?
OverTheRainbow88 · 23/10/2020 20:11

It’s a shame she has reacted in such a bad way.

Sorry OP, I think you’ve been very generous.

corgy · 23/10/2020 20:12

@Babyroobs My sister is not really easy to get along with. She 's got good feelings but definitely not a good character, she is quite aggressive and arrogant.
The two of them did not have a good relationship.

You don’t need to pay tax on a gift unless the person gifting dies within about 6 years of the gift (I can’t remember the exact number of years)

Ukholidaysaregreat · 23/10/2020 20:13

Your sister is being a twat. Show her this thread.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/10/2020 20:14

Why aren’t you respecting what your aunt wanted? Sounds like she had the measure of your grabby sister.

HotSauceCommittee · 23/10/2020 20:15

If I was your sister and you gave me 90k, I would be very grateful and say thank you. You have been more than generous.
No further discussion needed. Well done you. You did the right thing.

NiceGerbil · 23/10/2020 20:17

This stuff is so hard.

As you were the only beneficiary you don't have to give anything obv.

Money causes such massive issues.

I don't think you're being unfair at all but I can understand why she's pissed off even though she's totally unreasonable iyswim.

Longdistance · 23/10/2020 20:23

I would’ve given your sister jack shit. 1) she’s not named in the Will 2) for being a cf.”
My dB inherited a house from my uncle. I couldn’t stand the man as he was a racist, sexist, homophobic cunt!

Audreyseyebrows · 23/10/2020 20:26

Your aunt didn’t leave anything to your sister for a reason. She obviously loved you very much and you have done a very kind thing by giving half to your sister. Don’t feel bad, you are not selfish in the slightest. You are a good person.

PoetaDeLosSandwiches · 23/10/2020 20:27

Her reaction to your generosity is proof that your aunt was right about your sister.

She is aggressive and arrogant and makes you feel bad. In your position I would be telling her to forget it and give her nothing.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 23/10/2020 20:38

Your mistake was disregarding your aunt's wishes. If she had wanted to leave your sister money she could have named her in the will. We had the same experience in our family. My aunt named three of her five nieces as beneficiaries and left out the other two. The entire family was outraged and said the money should be divided equally. What they did not know was that one had already borrowed (and never repaid) thousands of dollars and the other had taken stolen
valuable items and sold them on eBay.
Nothing will satisfy your sister now. She won't even be happy with 50% anymore.

WindsorBlues · 23/10/2020 20:42

I really can't fathom how someone would view a 90K gift as "not enough" instead of seeing it for what it really is... An absolute blessing.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 23/10/2020 20:50

Wow your sister is a piece of work.
Your Aunt didn't leave her anything probably for this very reason.
She should be happy you gave her anything. Ignore her childish reaction and get on with your life she sounds awful.

VHSappy · 23/10/2020 20:50

If that's her reaction to a 90k GIFT that she has zero entitlement to I would now give her fuck all.

RedHelenB · 24/10/2020 07:04

Usually I'm in the divide it equally camp but in this instance I think she's a CF.

user1487194234 · 24/10/2020 08:20

I would never do that to my sister

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/10/2020 08:23

Your sister wasn’t left any money and you didn’t have to give her a penny, let alone that much. This behaviour is probably why she wasn’t included. Ignore her.

unmarkedbythat · 24/10/2020 08:24

If the situation was reversed would you honestly be 100% happy with that? I'd give my brother half. It would feel so tight not to.
