High earners of Mumsnet

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 05:47

I have seen quite a few threads where high earners are ripped to shreds and run out of town with torches and pitchforks. I thought that starting a thread for high earners would be a good idea so we have a space to talk money - savings, investments, tax etc.

My background is working class, I was a single parent working 3 jobs. I started my own business which has been amazingly successful so I’m definitely nouveau riche Grin

Anyone else want to join me?

Not really!

If I want to talk about savings, investment and tax, I do it on MSE or with my IFA.
I’m happy to pitch in on the Money pages here if someone has a question I can answer or I have an opinion - but that doesn’t need a thread for high earners.

I find it quite distasteful actually - I bit, “I’m considerably richer than how.”

If you have a question, ask it, that’s all.

I see no point whatsoever in separate boards. What would you suggest?

  • NMW
  • Basic rate
  • Higher rate
  • Additional
  • Xenia 🤣
Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 11:50

And I have never seen a thread with a high rather run out of town simply because of their income. I’ve only seen it happen when they’ve posted dickish insensitive threads about only having £xxxx entirely disposable income 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pootles34 · 17/09/2020 11:52

I want to ask what your business is OP Wink

ChiaraRimini · 17/09/2020 11:53

Cocomarine absolutely LOL at your income categories.
MN is the absolute pits for anything money related it just turns into the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch every time

ouch321 · 17/09/2020 11:55

Ha ha ha @ Coco

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 12:06

I didn’t say separate boards I just said a thread!

The fact that you’ve said I find it quite distasteful actually - I bit, “I’m considerably richer than how.” actually proves my whole point. Why shouldn’t we talk about money? I’m not from the UK and where I live money is takes about freely. You might actually inspire someone or help someone take a chance on something when they see how it is to have more money.

What do you consider a ‘high earner’? Doesn’t it vary from person to person, place to place, circumstance to circumstance?

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 12:11

@Changemyname901

Yes of course. I haven’t stated any criteria. You know if you’re a high earner relative to others where you live etc. I’m not the gatekeeper.

I agree with high earners being torn apart. Even simple threads with no boasting are shouted down for being “insensitive” it seems there’s no good time to discuss higher than average earnings on here.
I’m mid twenties and earn £50k. Currently saving for my first property and have £7k saved. I’ve looked into investments but saving for a property is my priority right now and I find investing very confusing so will discuss it with my mums financial adviser next year. My partner earns £60k in a similar industry and is educating me on property as he has two flats

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 12:17

Sorry, by boards I did mean threads - dedicated “high earner” thread rather than just woven into all the threads on one board.

We have a Money board - if you want to ask about tax, investments etc (actually there is an investments board already) just do it - that’s my point.

Look, my salary is £73,212pa out of London. You decide if I’m a higher earner. I feel wealthy! But some on here would think that’s pretty average. I’m fairly open about money - moreso on an anonymous thread!

I have no issue with people talking money on here. I just think it’s bad taste to run a “high earners club thread” about it.

Start a thread a specific question, and let the posters self select. Don’t make it seem like an exclusive little club - for those who are richer than yow (no auto correct this time!)

EggFriedCauliflowerRice · 17/09/2020 12:18

How much do we have to earn to qualify for you thread @LongPauseNoAnswer?

Ro198 · 17/09/2020 12:36

I wouldn’t consider myself a high earner but I think the thread is quite a good idea. On other threads it’s okay for people to say they earn £10k but if people dare to say they earn £100k they get criticised.

If people don’t want to be involved they don’t have to post.

Yep gave me a good chuckle as well @BuggerBognor

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 13:09

@Cocomarine this IS the money board hence my money related thread Hmm

@EggFriedCauliflowerRice I couldn’t give a hoot because as I said, I’m not the gatekeeper.

OP posts:
Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 13:26

Yes, it’s the money board.
So Hmm back at you.

All I’m saying - is just start a thread on here, on the Money board, when you have a question.

A thread called “Pension help for Additional rate tax payers?” is one thing, a “Higher Earners Talk About Money Stuff” thread just seems unnecessary to me. Partly practical - why bury tax and investments in a mixed thread, instead of affording each their own thread? But also I do think it’s insensitive to have a thread on a board for “Higher Earners” to chat on, alongside the threads about Universal Credit.

I’ll compare it to the Education board... I can’t afford private school for my children. When I see a thread saying, “Which N London girl’s school for musical DD?” I know it’s going to be a discussion about schools I can’t afford. And that’s fine. But it feels different to seeing a thread called “The Thread for Those Who Can Afford Private Education.” Which to me, would feel divisive, insensitive and somewhat smug.

Talk about Money topics that affect you as a higher earner, but don’t have a thread that is “for” higher earners.

Yeah,

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 13:27

Not sure where the ending “yeah” came from! Grin

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 13:36

Sorry @Cocomarine but I’m being far from insensitive. If people on universal credit don’t want to read about high earners they simply don’t click on the thread. That’s the whole essence of a forum like this.

I never click on baby names, parenting etc because I don’t have young kids. I shouldn’t have to sensor the things I experienced just because someone else doesn’t like it.

Again you are just reinforcing my point of being able to talk about being a high earner without posters like you screaming about how insensitive I am.

Are there an equal number of women giving out on the pregnancy threads because there are women talking about being pregnant when they can’t get pregnant themselves? No I highly doubt that.

You can’t apply rules like that to one subject and not another. I haven’t had a lot of money before and I’m just learning. I want to learn from other high earning women how they manage their money. Crime of the century it isn’t.

"I see no point whatsoever in separate boards. What would you suggest?

Grin thank you for a genuine belly laugh for that @Cocomarine!

OP - it's a shite idea.

unmarkedbythat · 17/09/2020 13:42

If you want your own thread you should have it , of course, but pretending high earners are run out of town is silly. High earners who disclose their high salary then claim not to be rich get a bit of a (well deserved) kicking, high earners who make it clear they simply cannot understand what it's like to be poor and make ridiculous suggestions then take offence when people say they are being ridiculous tend to get their arses handed to them, but I haven't seen any thread where someone gets shat on simply for being a high earner.

maddy68 · 17/09/2020 13:43

Why would I want to explain finances on a public forum (unless I wanted a pat on the back to say how clever and high achieving I am)?
Surely you talk to your financial advisor as everyone's circumstances will be different!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/09/2020 13:44

People can be a bit snippy with higher earners sometimes for no apparent reason, it's true. But people can be a bit snippy about any subject under the sun on Mumsnet, literally snippy about tea or kittens or flowers or socks or sandwiches. ANYTHING.

So you need to get a thicker skin OP.

And anyway I strongly suspect 90% of these "Oh I don't know how we're going to make do on £1500 a month disposable income" type threads are started by the windemupandletemgo types you just enjoy the frothing.

Or the "which bag would you buy for £10,000?" I always imagine a sad fantasist wishing she actually was in that position.

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 13:45

Some people start threads about getting or being pregnant, some people start threads about struggling to get pregnant, or IVF.

But nobody starts a thread called “Thread for People Who Can Get Pregnant”.

Which would be crass, smug and insensitive.

Nowhere have I said oh no, you mustn’t start threads about money. I am saying that your idea of having “Higher Earners” thread sucks.

awsomer · 17/09/2020 13:46

“I’m considerably richer than how.”

I thought the quote was ‘“I’m considerably richer than you.” (Pronounced ‘yow’.)?

Cocomarine · 17/09/2020 13:55

@awsomer you’re correct! I deliberately spelt it “yow” to highlight the reference, but it autocorrected to “how”!

I think there’s a difference in tone between a thread “for higher earners” and a thread where someone simply says “I’m about to earn £125K pa - tax mitigation advice please?”

The former putting me very much in mind of Harry Enfield!
