High earners of Mumsnet

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 05:47

I have seen quite a few threads where high earners are ripped to shreds and run out of town with torches and pitchforks. I thought that starting a thread for high earners would be a good idea so we have a space to talk money - savings, investments, tax etc.

My background is working class, I was a single parent working 3 jobs. I started my own business which has been amazingly successful so I’m definitely nouveau riche Grin

Anyone else want to join me?

I agree that the title of OP’s thread is far too vague.

Do you want to discuss tax issues, investment opportunities, or best boutiques to shop in NYC? Someone replies and the thread moves onto something else and it’s all a muddle.

Have a clear topic for discussion and ask about that.

What do you call high earners
I'm considerably richer than you
I'm rich in health and happiness
I'm better than you as I do have a pot to piss in?

Soapysoap · 17/09/2020 14:06

It's because people post "aibu to have 7grand a month disposable income and to think I'm skint"
That's when the pitchforks come out.

Port1aCastis · 17/09/2020 14:12

Yeah but we're all millionaires online so I don't take much notice of the £7 grand a month threads.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 17/09/2020 14:18

Why are you conflating wealth and superiority?

Is it because the narrative is rich = bitch? Again you’re only serving to highlight the need for women to talk openly about money.

Also why assume I’m neither happy nor healthy?

MN always has a strange relationship with what people earn. I didn't even consider myself a particularly high earner until I saw a thread ripping into a poster for asking how to budget with £X disposable income each month. According to the other posters she has so much more money than most people and should be grateful.

I have a much higher disposable income and I can tell you it's not a glamorous as people think it is.

awsomer · 17/09/2020 14:28

Ah! Gottit @Cocomarine

BooFuckingHoo2 · 17/09/2020 14:56

I don’t understand what you want to talk about Confused.

High earning people have mostly the same things to talk about as everyone else.

TheQueef · 17/09/2020 14:58

Xenia Grin
Bravo.

JoJoSM2 · 17/09/2020 15:20

Instead of going into ‘Money matters’, go into ‘Investments’. I’ve had good advice on there before.

I also often read threads on ‘Property’ and you do get people seeking advice on where to buy with budgets of up to 3M and the 1-2M bracket is quite common. They never get chased out of town.

Similarly, expensive schools or clothes get discussed on relevant boards etc.

The people who get ‘chased out of town’, tend to be the ones who, for whatever bizarre reason, want to show off how rich they are.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/09/2020 15:25

Hmm wonder what thread that was.

AuntieJoyce · 17/09/2020 15:28

I think OP your thread has inadvertently turned into the type of thread you were trying to avoid.

No point posting on money matters these days unless you need help with your tax credits or mortgage multiples it seems. Anything else is just showing off

hopelessbusiness · 17/09/2020 18:58

Anyone consider that OP could be Xenia with a name change?? 😂

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/09/2020 19:04

No, Xenia doesn't need advice on anything.

Stressing · 17/09/2020 19:33

I'm just hanging around here hoping the gold dust will rub off! Why shouldn't there be a thread for high earners? I'm fascinated and will hang around to see how the other half lives.

It's like saying we shouldn't have the big families thread because the trying to conceive threaders would be upset.

rosecakequeen · 17/09/2020 19:58

Who is Xenia?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 17/09/2020 20:03

Xenia is a high earning member of Mumsnet. You obviously haven't been here longer than 5 minutes Smile.

SoPanny · 17/09/2020 20:14

Here’s my take on it:

London dweller comes on, usually living in zone 3 and asking about getting a bigger place.

Budget is then revealed to be based on two people earning £150,000 a year.

Loads of non London people come on and say you could buy Morpeth/Pitlochry/Merthyr Tydfil for that

Cue savaging of OP for pleading “poverty” at not being able to get a nice 3 bed in Zone 5.

Repeat to fade.

Tbh I never read people's username.

I'm guessing by the tone of the conversation she isn't genuine?

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 17/09/2020 23:38

Oh she’s genuine. And spot on with her advice too.

maras2 · 18/09/2020 03:22

xenia Not genuine? How very dare you? Shock
She's legend. Smile

Cocomarine · 18/09/2020 08:37

Yep, legend.
I believe she’s genuine (though we all exaggerate or embellish sometimes I’m sure!) and although her insensitivity on financial matters is staggering sometimes, I do think her advice is often very very good.
She’s basically the richest woman on MN! Hence my joke about giving her a category of her own.

She’d probably tell women off for aiming to be “higher” earners, and tell us to get some ambition - why settle for a “higher” earners thread? You should aim to be worthy of a “highest” earners thread Grin

yecannyshoveyergranny · 18/09/2020 10:33

I like the sound of Xenia. Men don't apologise or feel bad if they earn more.

TheQueef · 18/09/2020 10:48

Xenia is the exception that proves the rule on everything.
If you have a post from Xenia it validates the thread.
(Always in oppo though, think she's currently being a bit racist on the Black mumsnetters thread I believe)

Tootletum · 18/09/2020 10:57

Actually, just to try and move to a specific question, are we really missing out by never going to an IFA? I tried to find one online and when they rang back they said unless we wanted to talk about pensions they couldn't advise us. I work in asset management, so feel like my knowledge of DC pensions is sufficient to make my own decisions, but I just want someone to tell me if my overall budget planning is off the mark. I budget 5k a month and therefore have 15k saved in a savings account so that it's instantly accessible, but that seems stupid with shit rates. Next year's tax bill is in premium bonds, and I put a poxy £100 into my fidelity ISA, and £100 for each child. I'm doing that wrong, aren't I...
