Out of interest what age did you pay off your mortgage or what age will you be when you anticipate paying it off?

leafeater · 05/08/2020 20:31

Spinachfinger · 05/08/2020 20:36

With any luck I'll be 50. I am single so it takes longer. We shall see...

I have a 20 year mortgage but overpaying so hoping to knock another 5 years off it at least and have it paid off by the time I'm 45. Although I plan to buy a bigger house when I go on to have children

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 05/08/2020 21:10

I was 44, DH a bit older, through overpayments and lump sums.

Such an amazing feeling. We have a very modest house though, just a 3 bed semi. I've never had any desire for a big house which is just as well really, not having the money to fund it and all.....🤣

TinkysWinky · 05/08/2020 21:30

due to finish when I am 53 and DH 55 but we overpay a modest amount every month and so if all goes to plan should finish in 10 years time when I am 45. If we have scope to overpay more in future I will, would love to be rid!

Hopefully next year, age 53. Should have another 10 years left but have been overpaying. Definitely worth doing if you can.

QueenBlueberries · 05/08/2020 22:05

37! I win!

NotStayingIn · 05/08/2020 22:08

46 but it's a bit of a pointless answer as I will be getting another mortgage at some point. I've paid off my 'not forever' home.

caringcarer · 05/08/2020 22:19

We overpay and I will be 63 and DH 60. This is because I caught first husband cheating on me so kicked him out and started again with current DH 3 years later. I had 4 years left to pay on first mortgage with ex h.

Makegoodchoices · 05/08/2020 22:32

I’ll be 55. I didn’t think it was the forever house but it is.

Unless I win the lottery in which case I’ll dump it for something beautiful with a swimming pool. Grin

flirtygirl · 05/08/2020 23:35

39

Soontobe60 · 05/08/2020 23:40

I was 59. Bought the house when I was 34. Best feeling in the world!

Ploughingthrough · 05/08/2020 23:56

If we were going to stay where we are it would be paid off by the time I was 39. But we plan to move in the next couple of years to access a better high school, so will need to take out another 200k.

PontiacBandit · 06/08/2020 00:02

Aiming for 44. We've just started to make serious lump sum overpayments. Although I would like to move afterwards to a bigger place, maybe a doer upper.

LightUpLetters · 06/08/2020 00:03

I was 32 and dh was 41. Paid it off in Jan this year. No one (apart from my mum) knows

GoldenPlover · 06/08/2020 00:14

At the moment I'll be 57 when we pay ours off.

However the plan is to move to somewhere more expensive at some point so that could change.

Hopefully we'll be earning more by the time that happens and won't have to increase the term too much!

DamnYouAutocucumber · 06/08/2020 00:14

Early 30s, as bought pre 2000 when things were different!
Borrowed again for the perfect kitchen, then had another DC and needed another bedroom. Probably be finished around 50, if no more major life upheavals.

ButterflyWitch · 06/08/2020 00:28

OMG I can't believe these replies. They can't be representative of RL?! I'll be paying into my early 70's

HoppyHop · 06/08/2020 00:55

65 but we are overpaying so hoping for 5 years off that.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 06/08/2020 01:02

36....... I was only 19 when we bought tho so quite lucky really.

Totallycluelessoverhere · 06/08/2020 07:28

I think it can be representative of RL butterflywitch?
I think there are probably some regional differences due to house prices varying according to region but I’m not entirely surprised by the answers.
I bought my first house at 19 with no family financial help and prices were a heck of a lot cheaper back then. If I had stayed in that house I would probably have been able to pay it off in my early thirties. But I met my husband and for married and we have moved a few times to more expensive houses which means I will be 43 or 44 when it is paid off.
But people can pay off their mortgages at young ages for a number of reasons: inheritance, overpaying, investing in doer uppers, buying young....
