UC for single woman, no kids, how much do you get for rent?
I know it's £409 or so for basic UC but does anyone know how much rent they pay?
Thanks

Rent depends on whether you have a place you are reasonably expected to live in, the housing allowance for the postcode of the area you are renting and your age.
It's not 1 blanket figure.
If you are working or have high savings that affects how much you get, too.

Itsnotlikemilkingacow · 02/08/2020 05:18

It differs based on rents in your local area. Have a look on your local council's website and search for "local housing allowance". That will tell you the maximum you can get for private rent (might be reduced as pp said depending on income or savings). If you are single and under 35, you get the amount for a room in shared accommodation, if you are 35 or over you'd get the amount for a 1-bedroom property.

Turn to us is a good website for calculating what you are entitled to. They have a great telephone advice service too. Sorry I have no other advice.

Can't get into a shelter / refuge as no kids
No family and friends are all married who more or less dropped off as soon as they got their married life
Thanks for the website recommendation

If I'm about to be made homeless where can I turn to?
No kids, so council or refuges can't help can they?
Thanks

Give Shelter a call. They will be able to advise you.

Babyroobs · 02/08/2020 11:50

It depends on your age. If under 35 then you would only be awarded the shared accommodation rate, so if for example you found a one bedroomed place, that may not cover all your rent.

I'm 40
I find this UC stuff confusing
It's £524.99 pcm for one bedroom but does that mean that all bill have to come out of the £409?
I can't see how that is doable?
Anyone else in the same situation?
How do you make the figures work?
Thanks All

if you are over 35 then you would get the one bedroom Local housing allowance for your area. Is the £524.99 the LHA or the cost of a let that you are looking at. So if your LHA comes to £524.99 per month you would get that and your standard element. So yes all other bills would need to come out of the £409. The £409 is increased at present due to covid, but that may only be temporary until next April. However, personally I don't see how they could reduce it down to the normal rate without causing uproar.
Babyroobs · 02/08/2020 12:13

I agree it's not a lot to live on, I guess people just have to cut down to the bare essentials.

Viviennemary · 02/08/2020 12:21

You'd also have o be looking for work if you are under retirement age and aren't exempted. It's quite hard for single people with no dependents. I knew somebody in this position.

Babyroobs · 02/08/2020 12:27

Uc works well for working people especially if you have kids on the claim. For everyone else it's not so great but then unemployment benefits have always been basic amounts.

Do you guys know if you have to pay council tax?
The benefits calculator people have recommended, I can't work out if they are just stating the amounts or if I have to pay those amounts
Thanks

You should get some council tax reduction. They will assess once you have had your first Uc payment.

I'm guessing private rentals are my only hope ... A housing association won't be interested in me
Need to find somewhere that will accept a UC tenant

I am not in this position but advise people regarding Uc as part of my job role. DWP will ask you to commit to 35 hours job searching a week, but at the moment there is some leniency because they accept that under current circumstances job hunting is very challenging, so I think at the moment there is some leniency. Your work coach, once assigned will help with CV, courses that may help ( once things back to normal), how to log any work search you have done etc. UC is applied for and manged online. However if you have no access to a PC or smartphone then you can do a non digital claim.

Do try HA. If you secured a HA property your rent element would most likely cover your whole rent as long as you don't have any extra bedrooms. It just depends on availability in your area really.
ageingdisgracefully · 02/08/2020 13:02

It may also be worthwhile t approach your LA to see if they offer some local assistance, such as Discretionary Housing Payments to help with rent.

You can ask for your rent to be paid direct to your landlord.

Does anyone know if you can move from one area to another ... From West Midlands to West London? Can I apply for a housing association house in West London if I'm claiming in West Midlands? Thanks
