UC for single woman, no kids, how much do you get for rent?
I know it's £409 or so for basic UC but does anyone know how much rent they pay?
Thanks

I doubt it. Isn't there a huge shortage of housing in London. Why don't you move to a place where it's easier to get a house. And where would you live while you were on a waiting list unless you have friends or family there.

Babyroobs · 02/08/2020 18:34

You need to have links to the area for social housing. As above there is a huge waiting list for social housing in the greater London area.

Op re Council tax we had to temporarily go on uc when dp lost his job and our council tax payments were reduced.

I have one friend in that area. Thought this may be an opportunity to move there.
Guess that idea is a non starter then.

Speak to your local estate agent. Not all private rentals expect a deposit, there are schemes.

Council Tax entitlement varies, but many LAs will provide 80% support, you'd pay the rest from your UC.

Living on benefits in the West Midlands is more affordable than living in West London.

Contact your local housing advice team, they may decide that they can help find you a room in shared accommodation as a temporary measure if you are about to become homeless or help with the deposit and bond for a private rental as you are on benefits. This does vary by area but some are quite good. You need to stay in your local area though unless you have to money for rent and a bond up front as other local authorities have no duty of care to help you at all.

And although it’s always worth applying to go on the council and housing association waiting lists the waiting time for a property is usually years long especially for a single person, unless you have extenuating circumstances such as a care leaver,Fleeing DV, have been in supported housing or have a medical or mental health need. If you do become street homeless then shelter or the local homeless outreach team will help though it’s not always immediate and may just be an overnight shelter to begin with.

Op, why do you have to leave by tonight? Evictions are paused at the moment due to coronavirus.

You mentioned refuges - do you have to leave because of domestic violence/you don't feel safe at home? If so, you don't need to have children to access refuge. Or alternatively the council will help you. You can call your council's homelessness team - they should have an out of hours emergency number.

Apolloanddaphne · 02/08/2020 20:45

How much warning have you had that you need to leave your home by tonight? Are you fleeing violence? Have you enough money to go to a cheap hotel for a few nights?

DWP here.

UC housing is based on the Local Housing Allowance for your council. Get on the LHA website and find out how much their maximum rent is for that area.

When you have found a place, speak to your councils 'Housing Options' section. They can help with guarantee and deposit.

Do not head south !! It's MUCH more expensive to live. !!

Find a job.. any job... you only lose 0.63p in the pound . So anything you earn is an increase.

Get to the 'turn2us' website. Put in some figures. ie part time job of 20hrs at minimum wage .. play with it.. and look at the help you can get.

UC is designed for people who can either work OR truly UNABLE to work. ;due to disability or illness (but even then it takes 12 weeks on the minimum until you are assessed unless terminal)

Thank you everyone
A friend threw me out of their house, that's why I'm homeless
It's a bit embarrassing but an acquaintance has offered a log cabin in their garden, so that buys me time, to work threw the suggestions
Thanks
