Maximum earnings to claim universal credit

Rosie2020 · 30/05/2020 10:29

Currently on furlough and my salary has been cut by about 50% Hmm. My industry is taking a while to get moving. What is the maximum amount you can earn to claim UC? Furlough is set to 40k. After tax I am receiving 2450 odd. I can’t afford to live on this in London. Furlough is also being reduced soon and I suspect my employer is milking the system for as long as possible.

I did phone the helpline and they said to fill in the form and if it gets rejected I can update it at a later date e.g when furlough decreases or I’m made redundant etc etc

Sorry Wandsworth is currently £295.49 pw so I was a little bit out. It would be 1280.46 per month housing if over 35.

highmarkingsnowbile · 30/05/2020 16:36

On 40k? A single person, no dependants on 40k isn't going to get UC.

carben · 30/05/2020 16:38

It's possible with max housing costs especially in inner London. No benefit cap as working.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 30/05/2020 17:38

OP, I think you just need to cut back on outgoings until you're back to full salary. UC isn't there to support someone who is already on a generous salary, it's there for people who need it to live.

Totallycluelessoverhere · 30/05/2020 17:45

carben OP said her take home pay after tax is currently £2450 so based on your calculations would she still get universal credit?

Totallycluelessoverhere · 30/05/2020 17:49

Sorry carben I just Reread tour earlier posts and realised where your figures have come from. I’m totally baffled that somebody with such a large income and no children could get any universal credit Confused

Rosie2020 · 30/05/2020 19:11

@Carben

I’m over 25 years old. Please can you show the formula.

Moving is not an option. I have another year and half to run on my tenancy and all my money is going on a ten day court hearing. I am not giving up my claim against the former employer. I’d rather go bankrupt than give up my claim.

You can look up you Local Housing Allowance (LHA) yourself. Just google it. Then add this to the standard allowance of 409. Then take away 63% of your take home pay.

carben · 30/05/2020 19:33

You need to be over 35 for the LHA rate of a 1 bed property to be used. If you're under 35 it is the equivalent of the rate for a room in a shared house for your LA

Isleepinahedgefund · 30/05/2020 19:34

If you go to the turntous website you will be able to do a calculation.

Sund0wnM00n20 · 30/05/2020 20:31

If you have a disability, I believe that you can work & claim PIP. You could try this perhaps

Mummiepig · 30/05/2020 20:41

My DH earns 23k I was made redundant and we have one dependant child, we earn too much for universal credit

Boomclaps · 30/05/2020 20:42

Hi OP. Are you over 35? We would need to know this for your LHA rate.
U35 is shared house rage & over 35 = 1 Bed

Totallycluelessoverhere · 30/05/2020 22:03

OP if you are under 35 and single I believe the local housing allowance in Wandsworth is £116.91 per week as this is the shared accommodation rate.

Rosie2020 · 30/05/2020 23:55

I’m over 35.

I did not choose to be put on furlough and not work. I was literally told your on furlough. You will get 2,500 and it starts on Monday! No notice nothing. I’m told a lot of people in my position are now claiming UC now.

OP posts:
Rosie2020 · 31/05/2020 00:14

@Carben

LHA 1 bed = 800.00 (seems low so need to check this is right)

Furlough could go down if my employer who loves to milk the system says nobody needs to work part time in Aug/Sep/Oct.

Doyoumind · 31/05/2020 00:58

You haven't been told that people who were previosuly earning 80k are now on UC. A lot of people who were earning low salaries and are now on 80% of that are claiming. Go to turn2us or entitledto and they give you a good idea of what is possible. If you currently have money that you are saving to pay for your court case, that counts as savings and I still think your salary is too high anyway to get any real help.

happinessischocolate · 31/05/2020 01:03

£2,500pm is £30k per year not 40k

Employers do not have to give any notice before furlough, it does seem to be done a couple of days before the 1st of the month.

The government are reimbursing 80% of salary of 2,500 or 80% of monthly income if normally lower. If your employer is paying you 2,500 they are paying 20% of that and the government are paying 80%

happinessischocolate · 31/05/2020 01:06

The LHA will be low, they stopped increasing it in line with rents about 10 years ago.

It's 850 in my area for a 3 bedroom house, you can't even rent a 2 bedroom house for less than 1000 let alone a 3 bed

SquirtleSquad · 31/05/2020 01:06

Also depends if you have any savings?

ActuallyItsEugene · 31/05/2020 01:29

Why can't you live on £950 a month, after rent?

No. You won't be entitled to anything.

highmarkingsnowbile · 31/05/2020 01:37

LHA is always low. It's designed to be so to keep landlords from spiking rents to line their pockets with taxpayer monies and punish poor people for aspiring to places outside their station. Oh, and yes, your savings, they're not going to care about your court case, if you have it, you are expected to use it if it's over the threshold.

SuperMedium · 31/05/2020 07:40

Rosie2020 is the reason you can live on £ 950 per month after rent is paid that you are paying high ongoing legal bills? Perhaps look for help with legal costs if you're perusing an unfair dismissal case due to disabilities discrimination. You might have more luck there than attempting to get benefits, which are meant to ensure you don't starve and have a roof over your head rather than to finance legal action.

SuperMedium · 31/05/2020 07:41

Can't sorry, not can!

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/05/2020 07:46

No you won’t be entitled to any UC as a single person still bringing in about £2500 a month net, Im really surprised you’d think you would be
