What credit limit do you have on your credit card and do you regularly use your card or just have it as a back up for emergencies?

I have 2 with €1500 limit on each. One is generally kept for real emergencies but the other has cash back so I tend to use this during the month and pay off in full on payday.

userxx · 22/01/2020 15:18

This thread has made me look an I'm quite shocked to find one is £4500 and the other is £3300. Its a good job I'm a sensible sort! I use one for everday living and clear it each month.

Khione · 22/01/2020 15:41

I have one with about 7.5k. Which I use most of the time and fully pay off every month. It rarely goes above a thousand except for holidays and one off larger purchases that are put on there solely for the insurance protection and still paid off.
I have another that has a nearly 19k limit. I have had it since the 80s and I accept every increase I am offered. I have only used it twice in the last 20 years. One was a nil interest cash transfer to loan my son 13k for house renovations and he was responsible for paying it back, which he did within the period. The second was similar but 18k for my house build, this has now also been cleared. It won't get touched again now unless I have some sort of crisis. I choose not to use it, never take the card out and it is just a kind of safety net. My income is limited and I am happy to live within my means but knowing I have instant access to that money should I ever need it is very comforting.

I totally ignore the month emails suggesting I use it for any sort of spurious reason

BarbaraofSeville · 22/01/2020 15:47

6 credit cards with limits that add up to about 70% of my salary.

Three have zero interest zero fee balances on them, offset with savings and premium bonds generating a few hundred quid a year in profit.

One cashback card I use day to day for just about all spending, paid off in full each month.

One M&S card with a small limit that I use in M&S only because the voucher percentage is higher than the cashback card. Again paid off in full every month.

Last one is only really used for spending abroad and for putting the hire car deposit on as it gives the best exchange rate available.

Itsjustmee · 22/01/2020 17:34

1 has 15100
2 13500
3 15000
I use one of them every day but it’s cleared every month
One has our holiday on it interest free when we come back we will clear that in 2/3 months
The other one has 0 on it

ThePants999 · 22/01/2020 18:43

A bit over £10K. I put £2-3K on it every month, and fully clear it every month.

1990shopefulftm · 22/01/2020 18:45

3.5k, I maxed it when DH car's broke and we needed one but should be cleared in the next couple of months, we wouldn't use it as everyday purchases.

okiedokieme · 22/01/2020 18:46

£10k, no balance ever though

Smarshian · 22/01/2020 18:50

£12.5k on one, £10k on the other. In total about £1200 actually being used.

userxx · 22/01/2020 19:57

Some of these credit limits are insane!

Lipperfromchipper · 22/01/2020 20:00

I have never had one...I have no idea what kind of credit limit I could get 🤣🤣🙈

rottiemum88 · 22/01/2020 20:08

One £13,000, one £10,000. No balance on either, tend to use for bigger one off expenses (for security) and then clear off immediately from savings/current account

Ellapaella · 22/01/2020 20:09

I have only just got one after many years of not having one at all. It is literally just for emergencies such as the car breaking down and it only has £1000 limit.

mouldygrapes · 22/01/2020 20:15

One has £4900 and the other £8000. I mostly use the latter as I collect points on it. Useful for big purchase to get protection but I clear them both each month. I’m not sure what the interest rates are

Fairylea · 22/01/2020 20:18

We have 3 each with a limit of £10k on them. We only use one - it’s currently at £1.5k and will be paid off in about 3 months. We used to be in a lot of debt due to low income and house difficulties (roof needed re doing, damp issues etc) but we’ve slowly got it down. We keep the cards open however just incase!

Elbeagle · 22/01/2020 20:18

One £25k, one £15k and one £8k!

RedRosie · 22/01/2020 20:20

£12k I think. I never use it any more. I should do something about that ...

SometimesItRains · 22/01/2020 20:23

£14k on our joint card. We use it for everything and pay it off in full at the end of every month (usually £1.5k to £2.5k) - we get John Lewis vouchers 3 times a year based on our spend and all internet purchases and holidays and the like are protected so it’s win win.

Purpleartichoke · 22/01/2020 20:26

We have 4 in active use each month, each for a different type of purchase. Credit limits around 15k each. We pay them off each month though so the credit limit is irrelevant.

FAQs · 22/01/2020 20:26

I have 5 cards had them years, they have between £4K and £8k limits, I use one for business which has £650 on.

Jaguarana · 22/01/2020 20:29

The credit limit is a bit of a nosy question so I won't answer that bit. Why would you want to know that and why haven't you shared?

What I will say is that some of the limits shared above seem shockingly high to me. Mine is used as and when necessary and paid off in full each month. I don't do debt.

Caramel78 · 22/01/2020 20:32

I have 3 cards - one is 6k, one is 1.5k and one is 1k.
I was just curious if it was the norm between others to have more than one card and if they used them or just kept them for an emergency. I hardly ever use mine so seems almost pointless having them but I’m wary to get rid of them incase of an unforeseen emergency

TannatTart · 22/01/2020 20:38

I had to look it up because I didn’t know. $30k on the one we use for nearly all our expenses and pay in full every month, and $39k on one we use occasionally. We are not even particularly high earners, and wouldn’t be able to pay them off if we were to max them out

Elbeagle · 22/01/2020 20:50

What I will say is that some of the limits shared above seem shockingly high to me

We have very high limits but don’t utilise it. Like you, we pay off in full each month. They just keep increasing the limit and we haven’t done anything about it.

FromEden · 22/01/2020 20:58

We have 3 cards with $30-40k limits on each Blush I presume american banks give out credit a lot easier!
