If mil was part owner of a house, and she died

i/2 house was left to her in a will, but a person could live there until she did.

We cannot find soliciters/person who is other part owner but know house was sold in 2002/

What can we do?

So you only know J's daughters name and it's a common one. That's really complicated. I could be that she sold the house knowing that only half of it was your mil's but didn't know how to find her or her heirs. Hopefully the money is sitting in an interest bearing account waiting to be found.

Aren't wills in the public domain after a person's death? Do you think you would be able to track down J's will and contact the executors? They ought to be able to give some idea of how to find J's daughter. (I could be wrong about the wills thing though.)

Apologies to everyone who already said that you can find wills after the persons death. I should have read the whole thread through again before posting.

I think if it was an executor sale and they knew that half the house belonged to someone that they couldn't locate then they would have to keep the money safe.

Are you sure that your mil did own half the house, is there any chance that her ex-dh actually left his share to his brother?

no heleft in to mil. We have documents of something else sold that went to mil years ago that was part of the same will. It was split in half.

dh says he knows who the exectutor is Nat west bank!
