Buying Clothes on Small Budget

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 21:35

Hi, I’m in desperate need of more clothes. I have two pairs of jeans (one pair is marked), two shorts and four t shirts (two are wash faded). I can’t afford to buy new clothes, charity shop prices seem to be not too far of retailer prices. Is there anywhere else to buy reasonably priced clothes?

Thanks!

eBay. But honestly charity shops are probably your best bet. Try a less nice area? Or failing that primark

livingthegoodlife · 21/06/2019 21:39

Have you tried Facebook selling pages? Often whole bags of clothes going for a couple of pounds. Probably some rubbish but some good too?

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/06/2019 21:39

Everything5pound.com is brilliant. Or primark sale items. I got three work tops for £3.50

Moominfan · 21/06/2019 21:40

Not all charity shops are created equal. You want the smaller charity shops ran by nans.

SegregateMumBev · 21/06/2019 21:40

What size are you? I have a pile of clothes on their way to a charity shop but could divert them.....

newmomof1 · 21/06/2019 21:41

What's your budget?
New Look have lots of jeans on sale for £10
TopShop have some really nice hoodies and sweatshirts also on sale for £10
I got some lovely T-shirt's from primark yesterday for £2.50 each

jellybeanteaparty · 21/06/2019 21:41

Car boot sales perhaps?

NumbersLetters · 21/06/2019 21:42

Kilo sales can be good value, if there is one coming up near you.

Bananalanacake · 21/06/2019 21:43

ask sister/friends when they have a clothes clear out could you have a look through first. my mum always gives me first dibs on charity bags. I can go for over a year without buying clothes.

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 21:47

Thanks for replies! eBay I still find are dear, the charity shops I’ve looked in seemed to be expensive. We don’t have a local Primark unfortunately, (I really wish we did). I haven’t thought of selling pages, so will try there. I don’t have any money left at the end of the month and have already gone into an overdraft, so have to find clothing as cheap as possible. Thank you for the suggestions!

Primark, everything5pounds.com, outlets, sales.
A good idea is to try to get clothes that all go with each other so you can create more outfits by mixing and matching.

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 21:52

I’m a size 10, my sister is bigger than me size wise, so can’t ask for hand me downs. I received some money for my birthday in March, which I planned to buy some summer clothes with but that went on other expenses that were more important. Will try all of your suggestions. Thank you!

Jumble sales... keep an eye out on your supermarket/library/community noticeboard.

Do any of your local charity shops have a bargain rail? I've had white stuff jeans for 50p and a seasalt tunic top for 70p from my local RSPCA branch.

delilahbucket · 21/06/2019 21:54

I've picked up loads on eBay over the years. Depends how brand fussy you are and how much time you have to look through listings.

Wowzel · 21/06/2019 21:54

People sometimes post things like this on our local facebook sale/swap page. They are always then inundated by people wanting to help and get offered loads of stuff by people who then clear out their wardrobes - with the advantage that they usually live close by

Processedpea · 21/06/2019 21:55

Uniqlo. Sale on now and good quality

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 21:57

Will see if I can try some other charity shops, I was really surprised by how much their items were. I always find there’s not a lot in my size either, one of the workers said it’s a popular size and the clothes sell quick.

Whereabouts do you live?

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 22:01

I don’t really feel comfortable asking people for free clothes on selling pages. I will have a look on some selling pages now, before I go to bed. I don’t have the funds until I get paid again but it will give me an idea of what’s about. Thanks again!

TK Max. Are they still going? If you've got the patience, you can good bargains there. My husband got a pair of jeans for 6 quid once.

growlingbear · 21/06/2019 22:04

Some of the online stores such as Shein aren't bad. Dresses between £10-30, tops much less. And some clothes on Amazon aren't bad either. Similar prices and range to Primark. I find charity shops horribly overpriced. The clothes are smelly, outdated and cost more than they did when new. They are eco but not bargains.

mrsm43s · 21/06/2019 22:06

George at Asda do some very cheap items, I bought some tops at 2 for £6 earlier this week.

TillyTots1234 · 21/06/2019 22:06

Wowzel - I live down South. Will keeps my eyes peeled on the places to look. Appreciate all the replies. Thanks again!

growlingbear - I was shocked too by the charity shop prices, it doesn’t feel like a charity shop anymore. A lot of the cheaper stores aren’t local to me, which is a shame, as it would help so much for people on very limited budgets.

A brilliant tip I picked up from the Style & Beauty boards is to look at the labels you like & go to a department store/shop & try some of the clothes on so you know what size fits you. Then look on eBay for those labels in the size you know that fits.
I've had some brilliant eBay buys.
I love Damsel in a Dress & have recently 'won' a brand new top with tags for 99p & £2.75 p&p. (Last season was £59 in the shop)
I try to keep things to under £10 - 12 (with postage added) max.
My last find was a pair of brand new Jaeger ballet flats for £7.99 plus £4 p&p. I searched online & discovered they were £140 in store.
A big tip for searching is also to try a generic search under top or trousers & then use the filters for the size you want. Also try spelling things incorrectly that's how I got my Jaeger ballet flats as I entered Jaegar as the search word & the seller had spelt it that way incorrectly.
It does take some time to find what you want, but the rewards are there.
