Outside London, what were you paid by age 30?

I turn 35 next week and a 30 year old colleague said to me that she’d be ‘disappinted’ if she wasn’t on X amount by next year as that was always her target for 30.

I know all this depends on the industry and so on. I’m only just on 10k more than what she quoted and now and worry that I have been completely deluded as to a decent salary for my age and maybe I should be asking for more.

£28k.

icantrember · 12/06/2019 06:15

15k but that's part time after 3 kids

CielBleuEtNuages · 12/06/2019 06:22

52k (but another capital). Already had 1 DC.

DH was on over double that at 30.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 12/06/2019 06:23

33k

Then moved to working inside London

60k

SardineJam · 12/06/2019 06:23

34k....i'm 33 now and am on 47.5k (I changed jobs and company last year)

CielBleuEtNuages · 12/06/2019 06:24

Also its not age but industry, qualifications, experience...

I was in the same industry as DH but his masters is more "prestigious " and his firm worked their employees harder (working through the night on a project was totally normal) so his salary was more on graduation than mine and increased at a higher rate.

Shelley54 · 12/06/2019 07:13

I was on £52,500 at that age. HR in a large company.

People’s idea of a large salary is completely subjective though.

yoursworried · 12/06/2019 08:10

At 30 I had recently had my second dc and my salary was 34k. I didn't go back to work for 2 years after that for various reasons, went back when he was 2 on 22k and then went full time when he was 3 for 37k. So my salary hasn't gone up that much in almost 4 years

19lottie82 · 12/06/2019 09:39

24k

nickymanchester · 12/06/2019 10:54

I don't know how old PPs are here, but when I was 30 (back in the mid 1990s) I was on £30k.

Putting that into one of those inflation calculators online that comes out at around £55k in today's money.

For context, that was in a very big bank working outside of London in a very male dominated part of the business. I also had a degree in a STEM subject and good experience from previous jobs.

Interestingly, I still keep track on what salary levels are like in the sort of job I had then (I'm still involved in the same industry) and similar roles these days are being advertised at around £30k-£40k.

Which is really quite disappointing considering that I was getting £30k for doing the same job almost 25 years ago. It really does seem that salaries haven't kept up with inflation.

Lazypuppy · 12/06/2019 18:23

£38k

youlittlecharmer · 13/06/2019 21:50

24k. I turned 30 last year.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 13/06/2019 22:12

I was 30 last year and earn £25k. Starting a degree this year because I seem to have hit a career wall. Hoping for a leap in salary by late thirties.

Cloudsurfing · 17/06/2019 06:57

£33k a couple of years ago at age 30

Strawberrylaceaddict · 17/06/2019 07:08

I was 30 in December and earn about 50k Including bonus

BikeRunSki · 17/06/2019 07:09

£18K, it was 1999

Ridingthegravytrain · 17/06/2019 07:23

About 50k

isabellerossignol · 17/06/2019 07:28

£18k, it was around 2004. I was very depressed about it but with hindsight I just didn't understand how poor salaries were in my area because I has got all my career information from reading the London based media. I wasn't really earning much less than most of my peers. I had thought I would be on three times that salary. Hmm

NameChangeNugget · 17/06/2019 07:30

My Mum always said 1.5 x your age should be the aim. So was aiming for 45k and got there

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 17/06/2019 07:37

I was on 22k at 30, and was only 2 years out of uni. At 35 I had doubled this so a lot of development in the 5 years

KatyaZamolodchikova · 17/06/2019 07:42

At 30 I was on £28k two years later I’m on £36k (same job, but moved from the 3rd sector to the public sector). I’m also about to apply to start a Masters.

availableforlunch · 17/06/2019 07:45

£50k for 30 hours. I did quite a lot of job-moving in my 20's to get payrises.

Loopytiles · 17/06/2019 07:48

Surely this is dependent on your field, skills for roles etc. Labour market factors.

Seedlip · 17/06/2019 13:56

£33k in Cheshire, 2007

zinrepus · 17/06/2019 16:50

£26500, but it's pro-rata for 4 days a week. My industry is notorious for low pay. Case in point, I have 5, coming up on 6 years experience and an MSc. Comparatively, my OH is around £36500, has an undergraduate degree, and is 27.

The BBC reported something about 24 year olds making £30k a year (in relation to new pension requirements) and I got pretty angry about it, considering I know I''m reasonabl well paid for my role in my area (London commute, been on the job market by choice several times in the past few years).

It seems like there are a handful of industries that grossly overpay and the rest keep people capped at £45k or so (and that's probably with 10 years experience).
