gas and electricity bills- how much do you pay per month?

I have been going through muy outgoings and am horrified to see that I pay no less than £90 a month for gas and £60 for electricity. We have gas central heating and a gas cooker but it seems extortionate to me.

As for the electricity I have been a bit naughty with the tumbledryer and the washing machine normally does two loads on a speed wash per day.

What do you pay?

About £60 per month gas and think something between 40 and 50 for electric. Btw I hardly ever use the tumble dryer and I try to put washing on overnight to get the cheaper rate. Apparently if you look at your meter when the tumble dryer is on, it will be spinning!

jessem · 19/07/2007 23:30

£35 gas and £40 for elec. think edf may put price up as i don't think i'm paying enough. use tumble drier alot ('cause of shit wet summer)

zookeeper · 19/07/2007 23:30

£20 for gas. £25 for electric, but I think that may go up to around £35.

zookeeper · 19/07/2007 23:39

cba · 19/07/2007 23:42

80 gas 120 elec

Twinklemegan · 19/07/2007 23:43

What's your thermostat set at for your heating/hot water and how long is it on for? We have our heating on for a couple of hours in the morning (for hot water mostly) and a couple in the evening, but most of the radiators are off. We're also in a small house which must make a difference.

We used to pay around £60 for electric when we had no gas, but again that was a small house and we had an open fire as well.

UCM · 19/07/2007 23:44

Don't get me started on this. As a matter of fact I should go on switch.com instead of yapping on here. Same as you ZK.

HermionesPatronus · 19/07/2007 23:46

i have just switched from brit gas to scottish power

zookeeper · 19/07/2007 23:48

don't have gas central heating on at all now althoug in winter it is on twelveish hours a day. will turn down thermostats which are set quite hich - will that make a big difference.

I feel like getting the dcs warm slippers and bedding and using a coal fire all winter

We're with Scottish Hydro Electric. I would recommend them.

UCM · 19/07/2007 23:55

Wouldn't you love to just live on a small holding where you generate your own power and make everything even nappies and stuff instead of giving so much of your salary to fucking utility/rail/banks....

expatinscotland · 19/07/2007 23:56

a fucking load

WendyWeber · 20/07/2007 00:36

gas £55, elec £71.

For a long time we paid £40 gas & £50-55 elec but when the rates went up we slipped behind a bit.

We have Victorian terrace, 3 bedrooms plus attic, very draughty. Gas CH/hot water & hob, electric everything else.

I wonder how much a PC uses when it's on all day...

bilblio · 20/07/2007 00:39

Got a letter through about the gas today, I was paying £39 a month but it's going down to £33. Electricity is £44, unless I get a letter about that tomorrow.

We've got a 3 bedroomed semi, gas central heating and cooker, but the heating gets turned off at the end of April and doesn't come back on until October. I'm nesh, but I've (nearly) convinced myself heating only works during Autumn and Winter.
When it is on I'm forever altering the timer to make sure we only have it on for an hour here and there when it's needed.

I'm trying to cut down the electricity bill by changing light bulbs, turning things off, running things like the washer, dishwasher and tumbler at night to get the cheaper rates. We have 2 computers on all day though which probably ruins any savings we do make.

I pay £25 for electric and £34 for gas.

Last week I got a letter from gas company saying that I owed them £289 and they were doubling my direct debit to £68 per month. I went and read my meter, then phoned them with my meter reading. I did actually owe them some money but it was only £5 and by the time winter comes round again I'll be back in credit, so they guy said that he would change the direct debit back to the usual amount.
The reason they thought I owed them this money was because they hadn't read the meter they had estimated it, Again!

Check your meter reading against what they have down, especially if they estimate it, chances are they are way off the mark.

98 quid per month for gas and electric combined. This is for a 3 bed victorian mid terrace with DG but no GCH

hotcrumpets · 20/07/2007 07:34

£49 all in gas and elec monthly

i always make sure they have an updated reading each month as their estimated ones are crap, plus the tumble drier is under lock and key and nobody is allowed to use it unless I say it's cold enough or not windy enough outside to use it i'm obsessive about turning lights etc off and the heating is turned off in April and does not get turned back on until it's pretty cold again (put a jumper on!)

zookeeper · 20/07/2007 07:35

my computer is on all day and most nights for that matter - is that expensive?

OP posts:
Shoshable · 20/07/2007 07:36

Work from home as a CM, use the tumbledryer all the time do at least one load of washing a day, PC on from morning till night, heating on all day in the winter set at 20, lights on alot in the day as quite dark in the house, and pay a combined bill of £64.00 per month for a two bed house with Scottish Power. Check Uswitch every 6 months or so and swap to the cheapest, but saying that have been with Scottish Power a year as they have been the cheapest.
