gas and electricity bills- how much do you pay per month?

I have been going through muy outgoings and am horrified to see that I pay no less than £90 a month for gas and £60 for electricity. We have gas central heating and a gas cooker but it seems extortionate to me.

As for the electricity I have been a bit naughty with the tumbledryer and the washing machine normally does two loads on a speed wash per day.

What do you pay?

gas £30 a month
elec was same but they've just read our meter and had underestimated so they're putting it up to £80 temporarily

hotcrumpets · 20/07/2007 07:38

i think it probably gets expensive to run anything all day every day, we're with Scottish Power too, they do seem to be good and you can run the account online so no paper bills and update your readings online so easy to remember to do it regularly

Electricity £175 per quarter.

No gas (oil fired boiled) £800 on oil per annum

WendyWeber · 20/07/2007 11:49

From PCPro website. The second para is a stunner - turn those PCs off, ladies :

How about your water-rates? Thames Water is charging us £60 per months (3-person household) - I think that is far too much (OK - we do loads of washing with an exceptionally diry=ty toddler, but otherwise we are trying to be rather eco-minded)...

bozza · 20/07/2007 12:28

We pay £85/month combined for gas/elec for a family of 4 in a 4 bed detached new house. Yanka are you on a water meter? I think ours is about £30/month. I average one wash a day - probably 7-9 a week.

collision · 20/07/2007 12:36

DH is obsessed about turning everything off and making sure things arent on standby like the TV and computer.

We pay £30 gas and £25 electricity.

Yanka · 20/07/2007 13:14

Yeah, we are on water meter, so really not sure what's happening (they did the leak test already and found only a tiny leak -apparently that can't be the reason. I wonder if we are paying for some other apartment (live in a block of 10 flats) or for the 'gardener's water pipe outside the house...
We wash about 5 loads per week, only have showers and DD only bathes 2-3 times a week as she has eczema - what are we doing wrong???

Our electricity has just gone up to £60 per moth, but that was to be expected - loads of gadgets on stand-by all the time. Gas I think is £40 a month. We are with Scottish Hydroelectric for both and very happy with them.

MuffinMclay · 20/07/2007 13:52

Water here is £350 per annum (Three Valleys). Not metered.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 20/07/2007 14:03

We pay £50 a month combined amount for gas and elec, but at the moment we owe £100 (do a monthly budget plan)
Water is on a meter and pay £27 a month.
Live in a 2 bed terrace with 3 of us.

Don't have a tumble drier or a dish washer as we don't have the room.

NannyL · 20/07/2007 19:52

I ahve just chaged providers.

Bear in mind i am in very little

i have lived ehre a year now and its based on me using the same amount of gas elec as the past year (which will be quite accurate i imagine and hope)

For a 3 bed terraced house i pay COMBINED gas and elec of £19 per month!

was pay £30 per month combined with old provider

zookeeper · 21/07/2007 09:27

thanks everyone for your comments - turns out I am anout £300 in credit on my electricity so they've reduced monthly payments to £60 and may go down more.

They are basing the gas on a meter reading from 2 years ago but I'm still £200 down.

the tumble dryer is looking vrey neglected!

I'll be definitely on to uswitch once I know what my actualgas bill is likely to be.

After years of worrying about money (very disorganised partner) it's quite liberating to be getting it all under control.

Next stop tax credits!!

would love to hear other money saving ideas.

About £300 a month combined but it's a huge house (two gas boilers for a start) and a lot of people here.

zookeeper · 21/07/2007 09:57

an getting into this - just tackled the water board and have ordered meter with a view to being put on the "social tariff" which means that the bills are capped at something like £30 a month - not sure of exact details yet but you need to be on tax credits - better than the current £70 a month.
