Hello veterans and newbies Grin can't believe we're still going a quarter of the way through the year!

I don't know about everyone else, but I've been crap at tracking properly. Obviously I've got invoices to go off, but I'm going to try to be better this month.

Good start this morning! £28 (£18 less my £10 deposit) on a virgin bonanza box, £8 cashback on the virgin deal too. £10.61 Appen work already done today. I most likely won't do any Crisp today, as I've got an essay due Friday I need to crack on with.

£36.31 so far this month.

How's everyone else ticking along?

@margaritasbythesea I don't get audits consistently, sometimes I get two a week, others I don't hear from them for ages!

I am doing a little victory dance today because I finally got 19/20 on the Crisp application Grin (about my 5th attempt!). Thanks for the advice about checking more than one category, I had been doing 1 or 2 but this time around I clicked 3 or 4 on some of them so that must be where I was going wrong.

margaritasbythesea · 05/05/2019 17:37

Thanks Otterses

Otterses · 05/05/2019 18:24

@WheelyCote Anyone up for an earn £10 a day challenge this year? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legalmoneyy_matters/3466885-anyone-up-for-an-earn-10-a-day-challenge-this-year#83772838

That's the first one Smile yes, any earnings over £1000 need to be declared and tax paid.

Hello! I would like to join you please! Have been doing matched betting for over a year now but need something else as the 'gubbings' are mounting up and the football season is ending.
I would like to join Crisp but I cannot see how to register. I am just reading the site as someone who wants to get Crisp to protect their brand online. The careers seem to be based in Leeds! How are you signing up?
Any other suggestions for a newbie would be very welcome. I have a 3 year old son but can do something in the evenings for 1-2 hours. I will have more time when he starts pre-school this september :(

fishandchops · 06/05/2019 08:25

I work full time and pay tax and NI from this, I need to declare my earnings from Appen do I still need to register as self employed even though I already have a job. HMRC website is confusing and I don't want to mess it up.

Otterses · 06/05/2019 09:07

@fishandchops yes. You still need to register as self employed Smile

Frenchdoors1 · 06/05/2019 10:02

Well I have my laptop now and I did the Crisp test and I did very well, 10/20!! Blush

I'm not that thick honestly.

justtheonethen · 06/05/2019 10:26

@Frenchdoors1 don't worry, just try it again.

allworthwhile · 06/05/2019 11:38

Hi all, had anyone on here ever actually failed the final Crisp assessment?

Otterses · 06/05/2019 11:44

@allworthwhile yes, I'm struggling to remember who though!

@Frenchdoors1 Grin PM me if you get stuck. Are you selecting more than one option for each question?

OP posts:
Frenchdoors1 · 06/05/2019 12:50

Thank you Justtheonethen
I'll try again soon.

Otterses Yes I checked more than one option on a few of them.

Mamaslave18 · 06/05/2019 13:54

Re: tax are you all declaring and paying tax on all earnings? I need to register to pay tax on my Appen earnings, but do I need to include earning from Prolifica, Respondent etc too?
Also do you only declare the amount you earned over the £1000 allowance or do you declare every penny?

anxiouswaiting · 06/05/2019 15:04

Earned a nice £25 today while out doing my grocery shop. £5 for a survey and video about cider for Field Worker plus £20 for a video about shopping for air fresheners for Fieldwork Hub. Can safely say I will not be doing video tasks in public again, I felt like an idiot wandering around filming and talking to myself. Easy money though if you have the confidence.

@Mamaslave18 I have been self employed for a few years on top of my regular job and I declare money from surveys, research interviews etc... the things I don't declare are the vouchers I get from things like shoppix, anything I win, gambling profits and cashback. Basically if you get paid cash for what you do then you have to declare it I think.

Misskitty86 · 06/05/2019 17:33

How long did you guys wait after you did the final crisp assessment to hear back? I don't think I did well at all, my laptop was super slow loading everything too. For the questions with a few sub categories to select - would all the questions for that comment combine to count as one item? Or is each one counted separately- eg 2/3 bits of work . thanks x

WheelyCote · 06/05/2019 21:14

otterses thank you for the link. Ive been reading and joining a few things.
To register as self employed do we register through hmrc website?

WheelyCote · 06/05/2019 21:17

anxious thats great! Is it the first time youve had to do videos?

justtheonethen · 06/05/2019 21:43

@Misskitty86 it was a few days, I think I did it on a Friday and heard back on the Monday/Tuesday. Each piece of content is an item I think.

Mamaslave18 · 06/05/2019 21:46

@anxiouswaiting do you mind me asking roughly how much tax you pay? I’ve done an online calculation and it’s telling me I will need to pay HMRC £1647.50 in tax if I make £3k. That seems loads?!?! It’s not really worth the effort if that’s correct.

anxiouswaiting · 06/05/2019 22:07

@WheelyCote yes, first time. It won't be repeated haha. I hated having people looking at me trying to figure out what I was up to. I'd be happy to do videos at home, but not supermarket ones again.

@Mamaslave18 That doesn't sound right to me. I earn a full time wage above the tax threshold so I do have to pay full tax on everything I earn. It doesn't take me into higher rate tax bracket though (40k I think?). It is 20% of your self-employed earnings will have tax charged on it unless you earn under £1,000 as that is tax free. Theres also NI to pay if you earn over a certain amount (around 6k I think) but I have never brought in that much.

I'd say the calculator you used was wrong, unless you are already a high earner in which case you pay 40%, but even then it looks wrong as that calculation says you would pay more than 50% of your earnings in tax. Did the calculator you used ask about your employed income? I wonder if that is the tax you would pay between both your employed and your self-employed work?

This is a nice simple explanation www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/tax-and-national-insurance-when-youre-self-employed#how-much-can-you-earn-tax-free-if-youre-self-employed

Also remember you can claim expenses so that reduces the tax bill.

Mamaslave18 · 06/05/2019 22:15

Yes I work but earn under 40k and am only expecting to make 2-3k a year with Appen max. Phew I’m glad the calculations I posted sound wrong to you!

What expenses can you claim? I’m not sure Appen work or surveys etc warrant any?

Moofreemum1 · 06/05/2019 22:21

I work in accounting. All depends how much employment earnings you earn. NI threshold is 8632. 19/20 personal allowance is 12500. Between 12500 and 50,000 is the basic rate at 20%. Higher rate 50,0000 to 150,000 is 40%. You have to put all your employment earnings in and then at the end take away the tax you have already paid on that. Some expenses are deductible as long as it wholly and exclusively relates to the trade. Eg. Portion of internet and phone expenses. Hope this helps.
