Statutory maternity pay

Hi,
Very confused at the mo.
I have just revived my first month of stat maternity and it’s a lot lower than I expected . It’s working out at £121.22 p/ w . I thought stat pay was currently 144 p/w. Have I been underpaid ? As surely I wouldn’t have to pay a lot of tax or Ni on such a small amount. Any advice appreciated Thanks

Have they not sent your payslip so you can see the amounts deducted?

confusedandemployed · 15/01/2019 17:47

Also could pension have been deducted too?

SocksRock · 15/01/2019 17:47

When I got mat pay it was in chunks of whole weeks. So depending on how many Mondays were in the month I either got 4 whole weeks or 5 whole weeks.

PotteringAlong · 15/01/2019 17:48

It’s £145 or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower.

How much do you earn when you’re at work?

SocksRock · 15/01/2019 17:49

So if it was a 4 weeks month and you've received £576, but divided it over 31 days, that averages to £130.06 per week, then a small amount deducted for NI might give you the figure you had?

SuperstarDJ · 15/01/2019 17:51

Tax and national insurance is deducted so that probably accounts for it.

dementedpixie · 15/01/2019 17:54

The 1st 6 weeks is at 90% of salary. It's only after that that it drops to £145ish per week.

Surfskatefamily · 15/01/2019 17:58

90% of your average weekly wage in an 8week period...i think it was maybe 2oth to 28th week? You can request the figures from your employer if you want to check. Its only 145ish if your wage was higher

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 15/01/2019 17:59

If the last day of SMP week falls into next period, it will be paid in next period!
Eg. If the last week of SMP is 27/01- 02/02 then u will get that weeks smp in February's pay.

Sassy31 · 15/01/2019 18:00

Thanks for your responses. I work part time and get £22000 before tax & NI contributions , so about 17000 ish after tax , other deductions working out at just 1426 a month after tax , NI & pension. So £122.00 seem rather low?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/01/2019 18:07

So you normally get around £1426 per month after deductions? Have you already had your 6 weeks of 90% or is this the start of your mat leave/pay?

PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:09

What does your payslip say?

Sassy31 · 15/01/2019 18:09

Hi, first 10 wks at full pay , 16 wks 1/2 pay and last 3 months statutory pay . So this is my first month of stat pay . If that makes sense . So I’m towards the end.
I didn’t think they could deduct pension contributions from stat pay?

OP posts:
PatriciaHolm · 15/01/2019 18:10

You will get taxed on it yes, as over the year you will earn more than the tax free amount. So that plus NI is likely to be the answer - do you not have a payslip?

Sassy31 · 15/01/2019 18:10

Haven’t received my payslip yet 😢

OP posts:
PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:11

Then how the hell are we supposed to know?Confused

Sassy31 · 15/01/2019 18:24

Last 3 months of stat pay. Prior to that I got 10 wks full pay & 16 wks 1/2 pay so the last 3 months is statutory pay.
No pay slip yet so can’t check out 😢

Brain is fried from it all Pounty sprout 🙄🙄
Wish employer would just be a lot more upfront when you go on mat leave about your pay and deduction so you can plan your monthly spend..
No more take out coffee for me 🥴

Been a few years since I did it but I'm sure there is a calculator on the Hmrc website which tells you how much you will get paid each month for smp

spinn · 15/01/2019 18:46

www.gov.uk/maternity-paternity-calculator

Found it! This is the before deductions pay but it will help with budgeting

PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:50

How are you paid? Monthly? 4 weekly!

PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:50

?

PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:51

How does it relate to the date that you started mat leave?

PoutySprout · 15/01/2019 18:51

Because mat pay may spread across months unevenly.

Sassy31 · 15/01/2019 19:11

Paid monthly
Thanks for the other info guys will give the calculator ago😊
Mat pay started on 27 June - so I’ve been calculating it weekly as each month was different.
