But we both studied and have 5 languages between us.

Have you any experience as a travel agent? My daughter works from home and earns £30-35k a year,

Mycatiskillingme · 16/08/2018 09:36

I work from home now. Although when I decided I could no longer handle commuting. I did not have a job but was fortunate as an ex manager wanted me to do some work for him but it was ad hoc. I then started looking around and started teaching English to Chinese students, but for most of those tutoring jobs you need a degree. I earned about £1000 a month when I worked enough hours so nice but not great.

I then started looking for my professional job (which you need a degree for) which was remote working and found a job which pays what I earned before when commuting to London. But as for surveys the most I ever made was £30 in a month.

I hope that helps

Mackers123 · 16/08/2018 10:04

what is match betting?

OP posts:
HilaryBriss · 16/08/2018 10:49

From Wikipedia:

Mаtched bеtting (also known as back bet matching, lay bet matching or double bеtting) is a bеtting technique used by individuals to profit from the free bets and incentives offered by bookmakers. It is generally considered risk-free as it is based on the application of a mathematical equation rather than chance.

There are threads about it here and here

fabulousathome · 17/08/2018 00:35

I run craft classes from home.

Microwavey · 17/08/2018 00:41

I've done various roles working from home but they were all actual jobs (or freelancing in my industry) rather than surveys etc. They were either advertised as home based (eg I worked for the nct from home for about a year 1 day a week) and others I negotiated to work from home. I still had to use childcare though and was working full 7.5 hrs a day in some of them, just in my house rather than an office.

crimsonlake · 17/08/2018 07:59

Fabulousathome, that sounds interesting as I am an ex art teacher thinking of ways to increase my income as a supply teacher. Do you mind sharing how you got started etc and how much space you have? A friend did this, however it did not work out as people seem reluctant to part with several pounds once a week / would not commit / did not want to block pay and often used her materials whilst deciding to continue with their new hobby.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 17/08/2018 08:04

My friend is part of the travel counsellors network and earns about £25k but could earn more but has 3 kids!!

Others I know of round here

Accountant
Cleaning & ironing services
Childminder
Hair, nails, eyebrows (beauty stuff)

There's also a lady who specialises in doing lovely invites, wedding stationery etc... works from home. Lots of local business plus she sells on Etsy too.

I think it's a case of looking at the skills you've got and seeing what you can do x

abbsisspartacus · 17/08/2018 08:14

I can't find the follow thread link!

I've seen travel agent jobs advertised as home based also dog walkers

PolkerrisBeach · 17/08/2018 08:37

Of course you can. But it's not easy, and you need to be able to filter out all the "get rich quick" schemes and MLM shite to find something you want to do.

There are very few "work at home" jobs where you're an employee. Unless of course you've already been working for a company and have negotiated to be home based rather than office based. Self-employment is very much the default setting for people working at home.

You are going to need some sort of skill though. Doing surveys can make a bit of cash but very little.

Elliss2018 · 17/08/2018 08:47

My friend works for Ikea customer services from home, not sure how she got into it though.

LOVELYDOVEY05 · 17/08/2018 11:37

Animal boarding /walking service though you need some secure outside space at least a yard preferably a garden

misspops · 17/08/2018 15:01

I already work from home ( virtual/online personal assistant) but need extra income so going to look at other things I can do as well.
Really want to try matched betting but i'm not patient enough to read all the guidelines, I'd also like be one of those people who enters a million competitions a month wins a few prizes

Mackers123 · 18/08/2018 09:55

thanks all for your replies. unfortunately i’m not clever enough to be a teacher but there are a few things i could try. Misspops the virtual PA sounds interesting how did you get in to that?

OP posts:
misspops · 18/08/2018 12:31

My job was office / store based until I moved cities , and handed my notice in. My boss gave me some work to do from home whilst I was searching for another job and it ended up becoming a part time role with more responsibilities. So I got lucky ! Although there are virtual PA companies out there -with WFH positions if you do a bit of googling. I’d also like to do cat sitting (daily feeding etc) whilst people are on holiday. (And matched betting, and winning competitions ha ha ) Maybe we need an ‘up my income’ thread to help with ideas on a these things

Mackers123 · 18/08/2018 13:13

thanks misspops, ha ha an up my income thread sounds good :-)

I have been doing various things to earn extra money over the years; matched betting, surveys, mystery shopping etc. It has been exactly that though - extra money. I couldn't have survived on it solely.

If you are interested in joining any particular survey companies please pm me, I would reommend prolific, swagbucks, populuslive and yougov. There are others that I use too if you're interested.

I also use various apps on my phone - shopmium, checkoutsmart and vypr. The first two allow you to get shopping items for free / reduced price, again I just see this as a nice bonus to help me stretch the budget further than normal.

Lastly I have recently joined Flamingo Paperie (formerly Phoenix Trading). They sell greeting cards, giftwrap and stationery accessories. It is not a get rich quick scheme, it is not a MLM scheme, but it is also not the answer to all your prayers - it's down to you what you put in to it, there are no targets to meet But there are potential financial outlays at the beginning if you choose to hold stock. Some people choose to sell from the brochures, I am selling via craft fayres etc, and therefore I have needed to buy stock. This is fine for me as I see it as a long-term investment, if you are just looking for an employee type work then this wouldn't be for you.

Another option may be something like childminding if your home would be suitable? Could you train and do mobile hairdressing / beauty services / dog walking etc?

KnitFastDieWarm · 18/08/2018 18:04

I earn around £800 - £1000 a month doing a couple of days’ worth of freelance copy editing.

Mrskeats · 18/08/2018 18:05

I teach English to students in China

elQuintoConyo · 18/08/2018 20:46

From home, MrsKeats ?

My Celta qualification (TEFL equivalent) cost £700 (back in 1998, not sure now!) in my hometown. 9-5 then homework: couple of essays, couple of presentations plus preparing lessons and writing feedback. Back then you needed either a degree or be over 25 with "life experience", but i think they dropped that a few years ago. The course is very intensive but lasts just a month and you're good to go! Lots of online work about.
