How much bone contents cover do you have?

We have a 4 bedroom house.

2 adults and 2 children.

We’re about to move so I’m reevaluating as I think removals is a risky time for potentially losing everything.

£48/month gives us £50K cover. £78 gives us £100K cover. Both are more than I’d like to pay!

Home contents per chance?

Hawkmoth · 07/08/2018 13:40

Lots, as I am quite fat.

Outnumbered99 · 07/08/2018 14:48

Nearer the 100k cover but for much less than £78

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 07/08/2018 14:51

Lots; my bones are important to me Wink

eternalopt · 07/08/2018 14:53

Went for the top level of £100k as couldn't be bothered to walk round my house figuring out how much Similar sized for £37 a month though. Shop around. Always found Axa the cheapest.

makingmiracles · 07/08/2018 14:55

Seems expensive, it that Home and contents? I’ve contents only as I’m in rented and I’m covered for £70,000 at £6.50 a month

eternalopt · 07/08/2018 14:56

Missed out "I needed". Figure out much much I needed.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 07/08/2018 14:56

As many of my friends lost their homes in a wildfire just over 2 years ago I’d say go for the 100k. Many were surprised how quickly things added up.

HRTpatch · 07/08/2018 14:59

I've just renewed mine with £75k contents...house and contents together £236 a year.
4 bed house.

LOL at typo!!

Pressed post not preview.

This is a specialist military company but I will definitely shop around.

Includes just two items over £1K.

Will lean towards the £100K 😫😫

Friends found out to their cost that being underinsured is a very bad idea. Insurance paid out only 50% of their claim because that's the percentage they were underinsured by. Meant they had a tiny amount to refurbish their entire house. Apparently its because most people only think about what might get stolen, not what might happen in a different sort of emergency.

So, this calculator www.confused.com/home-insurance/contents-calculator# says under £25K. I wonder if £50K is enough. If the difference was a few £ I wouldn’t hesitate to go to £100K, but it’s a significant amount more.

It’s complicated by the fact we’re leaving about £5k of items in our house when it’s let.

Think of it this way. It's everything not nailed down:

Furniture
Non-integrated appliances
Clothes and shoes
Toys
Curtains
Carpets
Decorations
All bedding, towels etc
Contents of your loft and/or garage
TV, and all related items
Tablets, laptops and PCs, printers, cameras etc
Small Jewellery under £1000 an item

To replace new it soon tots up.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 07/08/2018 18:44

How much would you estimate clothes at? I said £1K per person, but I’ve got 20+ ball dresses so I suppose they’re £2K+ to replace.

PattiStanger · 07/08/2018 18:45

Obvioulsy I don't know anything about your circumstances but I've just renewed by buildings AND contents for under £200 for the year, I think it automatically gave me at least £50k

What is your risk that you are being quoted what appear to be ridiculous prices

PattiStanger · 07/08/2018 18:47

I was slow typing so didn't see your recent posts.

Are you looking at specialist landlords insurance and would you really buy 20+ new dresses if yours were lost? Don't the removal company provide insurance for when your items are with them? I'm not sure that would be covered by your insurance

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 07/08/2018 18:48

Military family. That’s it really. The area we’re moving to is perhaps more risky than the one we live in, but the quote was based on our current address.

At present we pay £50/month including home emergency cover which has been really useful.

OP posts:
NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 07/08/2018 18:50

Would I buy them again? Maybe 10, slowly over time. I rewear the dresses.

Not specialist landlords cover.

The removals don’t cover the transit insurance - that’s an extra fee. But our home insurance would cover goods in transit and storage.

But this home contents insurance would cover goods in transit and storage.

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 07/08/2018 19:06

You can't base your insurance on whether you would go out and buy things again, you base it on what you have, and if you had to replace it that week (so no waiting for sales or buying second hand, even if thats how you got it). So, £1k would buy 8 or 9 pairs of running shoes for instance - it really is nothing in that context. Bedding is another thing that stacks up really fast without you thinking about it - or garden/diy tools

And being underinsured isn't a cap on your claim, they will ratio your claim by the percentage you are underinsured.
