I now barely take home anything, i worked so many extra hours last week and am so despondent at my earnings

what is the best thing to do about this?
change my extra 20% tax to my other job?

Speak to hmrc explain the situation and they will give you the correct tax codes for each job.

Emma145 · 30/07/2018 07:53

When I had two jobs I split my tax code so had 9000 tax free allowance on main job and then 2000 tax free on my second job. I just rang up and they did it for me on the phone.

sunlighthouse · 30/07/2018 07:56

Are you sure you're on the right tax code? If you're being taxed 20% you would still take home the majority of your earnings?

How much do you earn in your first job? Is it already taking you over the earnings threshold?

xyzandabc · 30/07/2018 07:57

Do you earn more than your personal allowance (£11850) at your other job? If you do then they are right to tax you at % on everything over that regardless of which job it is earned at.

If you earn less than that at your other job then as pp have said, phone HMRC and ask them to split your allowance between the 2 jobs.

xyzandabc · 30/07/2018 07:59

That should say 'right to tax you at 20% on everything over'

Slartybartfast · 30/07/2018 07:59

i did speak to HMRC because i had 4 jobs last year and owed tax so they decided to leave my tax allowance in my main job and 20% for my evening work.
I will ask them to split it more evenly.
I earn more than my personal allowance in my main job

I guess my earnings/tax are correct it just feels soul destroying to put in all the extra hours and not actually see it reflected in my pay slip

You get a tax-free allowance but once it’s used then you pay tax at the appropriate rate - doesn’t matter if it’s a second job. Have you earned over the tax-free threshold for the financial year?

Nanasueathome · 30/07/2018 08:02

Don’t forget..if you split your tax allowance between the 2 jobs then you will pay more tax on your first job as your tax free allowance will then be less there
Overall, you cannot earn more in total than the tax free allowance before you have to pay income tax

reallybadidea · 30/07/2018 08:02

But if you split your tax allowance you will pay more tax in your other job. You won't be any better off.

NoSquirrels · 30/07/2018 08:02

You just need to change your mindset I guess! You still get the majority of your earnings for extra hours.

Slartybartfast · 30/07/2018 08:04

I am now taking home half of what i did before, for my evening job

Tax is 20%, though? Not 50%?

Caribbeanyesplease · 30/07/2018 08:07

It’s not something to concern yourself

Whether you are taxed on the main or the evening - the total amount you pay will be exactly be same

Strax · 30/07/2018 08:11

But splitting the tax allowance over both jobs won't make the slightest difference to the amount you are taxed. Say you earn £15,000 in job one and £5,000 in job two, you will be taxed at 20% on everything over £11.850 regardless of whether you have it all allocated to job one and none to job two or £5k to job two and £6850 to job one. Financially, it won't be any different.

xyzandabc · 30/07/2018 08:14

Tax is only 20%, why are you only getting half what you were before?
Are you doing the same number of hours at the same hourly rate?

What are your NI and pension contributions? Even that shouldn't take you to 50% deductions, is there anything else being deducted?

Double check your payslip, are they definitely paying you through right amount for the right number of hours and are they definitely taxing you 20%, not an emergency tax code?

BritInUS1 · 30/07/2018 08:16

If you earn more than your personal allowance in your main job, then the 20% deduction on your second job is correct.

Sevendown · 30/07/2018 08:19

It’s just 20%.

Is the NI correct?

Slartybartfast · 30/07/2018 08:20

Doubled checked my pay slip.
it is BR for my evening job.
That is emergency tax isnt it?

OP posts:
aperolspritzplease · 30/07/2018 08:22

Br is emergency tax

BendingSpoons · 30/07/2018 08:22

Did you pay the tax you owed from a previous year or are they taking that back now from your evening job?

Teensandfuture · 30/07/2018 08:23

Are you sure its just 20% tax?
You mentioned last year you ended up owing HMRC tax so maybe they clawing back tax due this year?

Strax · 30/07/2018 08:23

No, BR means basic rate so just means it is all taxed at 20%.

Slartybartfast · 30/07/2018 08:23

no i am paying the back pay tax in installments.

OP posts:
BeeFarseer · 30/07/2018 08:26

There's really no such thing as 'emergency tax'. BR just means basic rate, of 20%, which other posters have explained.

You only get one personal allowance, so if you earn above that in your main job and you're not a higher rate taxpayer, then a BR code at your evening job is correct.
