charliecat · 23/05/2007 12:21

Following on from a previous thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

Nymphadora · 09/08/2007 18:27

Slinking back in o/d is biggest it has been for about 2 years mainly from huge mobile bill when I started seeing new b/f sorted new contract now but am not going over my limit again!

FlameBatfink · 09/08/2007 18:43

charliecat · 11/08/2007 16:32

So, my summer holidays is consisting of spending maybe a pound or two a day on ice cream, and bless my kids they arent moaning.
Xp is taking us all to longleat next week. My tesco clubcard vouchers are payign for the day out and thats my contribution to it.
I have sent off all the bump to Tax Credits but im sure they will pick holes in it.
When I finally do get some money I need a perm.

We are in sh*t. I've had to pay a load of money out on various things (including £52 to get re-referenced in the hopes of my mum not having to guarantor anymore... she said she would pay any fees to stop it, but apparently not )

I put food shopping on the business credit card. I am nearly at the limit on that and I don't know if i have another thing to come out of it (bloody paypal - I can't tell where it is taking the money from because it doesn't show up for days ). We have next to no petrol, and we need the car to get DH back and forth to work. We have a bald tyre, and no money to replace it, but if we get caught it is points on licence

The house looks like sh*t and I am so argh that I can't get off my arse to sort it.

charliecat · 15/08/2007 15:20

So 2 kids, no money coming in. Fucking fantstic, and been like this since May.
I am trying not to think about it, and selling anything that comes my way, but my temper is vile and im completely pissed off.

Hi, sorry, posted this to the old thread last night, silly me, sorry!

Please can I join? I have £2,500 to pay off, but only have £360 p/m income, £250 of which is rent alone-argh need help!
Am becoming a student in October though so HOPEFULLY that will help-really cross because it was all run up by ex but was in my name (I was silly, I know, but am paying for it now!!) and he refuses to pay any form of maintenance, so am quite mad as none of it went on me or dd, just him, yet I have to pay it off, and he lives rent and bill free with girlfriend.
Am managing to make min payment but want to make proper dints in it!

FlameBatfink · 15/08/2007 23:24

You have a decent reason for it being crappy CC - mine is just me foolishly wanting to live for a few weeks without counting every penny.

Hello Hansmummy - fallen off the wagon a bit here, but when you follow all the tips, it does get better!

charliecat · 16/08/2007 09:55

Bloody Hell Hansmum, that is Crap.

FlameBatfink · 16/08/2007 12:59

Right - spent an hour looking at it all, and remembering how much I should be capable of saving each month.

This month is just muddling through tbh until I can get a fresh start in September (thankfully the housing has just come in so I can get the petrol & tyre).

After that I am actually withdrawing the food money, and that is all we have - if we spend it on silly things, then we have to scrabble by with whatever is left over until the next lot of money/shopping is due.

ska · 21/08/2007 18:31

i have really lost the plot on this one recently. and we are thinking about moving so i really need to sort myself out. Steph - does betterway charge you, how do theyy make their money?

i am trying to spend NO money for the next 2 weeks on anything except food. got powergen to refund £192 i had 'overpaid' and that was very useful!

GreedyGecko · 23/08/2007 13:23

Really going to have to get back on with this. Have paid off my Mint card, but because of the kitchen my M&S card is rapidly rising, insurance still won't tell us if they'll pay any toward it. DP still off work, they're only paying him full basic pay, but not with o/t like they were before, so we're about £60 a week short. Still not sure when he's going to get a payout as he's going to need to go back to see the doctor. And More Than have c*ed up the car claim and paid out to the other guy (who pulled out in front of dp), so now we've got to wait for them to sort that out to get our XS back.

Fingers crossed kitchen will be done in about a week or so, so then can start getting back on track.

GreedyGecko · 23/08/2007 13:25

Oh yeah, and we got the thing from TCs today re overpayment, but they're ^still not acknowledging that they've messed up and haven't paid us the money that they claim.

charliecat · 24/08/2007 13:08

Well my tax credits award, the man said on the phone, is in the post and money should be in my account in next 9 days(was 10 yesterday) Given that ive had no tax credits since may, a tenner will make me feel rich.
Its the summer holidays and my kids deserve a medal.
The money i have made from ebay i have paid bills with. I have spent my meagre £1000 savings and owe about £200 on my food credit card.
So Ive managed to JUST keep my head above water.
And im going to treat myself to a perm and a HUGESOME bottle of vodka when I do get money.
MSE will direct you to FREE places to sort out your debts. Dont pay anyone a fee to do it folks.
Companys are getting rich off peoples desperation, use the FREE services.

Nymphadora · 27/08/2007 19:53

Nymphadora · 28/08/2007 19:13
