Following on from a previous thread there are a fair few mumsnetter trying to get out of and stay out of debt....chatting about it and moaning about skint
We are a friendly bunch please come in

A round up of a lot of the tips/links so far:

  • Decent food budgetting/planning - Email Flamesparrow at gmail dot com for a copy of Capp?s spreadsheet! (Didn?t want to tell everyone to CAT you Capp unless you wanted them to )
  • uswitch
  • s/o for savings AND a s/o for treats
  • Work out the birthdays that will be coming across the year and make sure I put aside enough each month to cover the hell months.

BUDGET
Work out a spreadsheet for your monthly/weekly spending. Spend a couple of months tracking every penny you spend ? you will be able to see where your money trickles away to!!!

SHOPPING
*Shop online if you make a comprehensive list (it will cost more if you miss lots off)
*Menu plan ? easier to make a stickable to shopping list

  • Use Quidco to get money back on shopping
  • If you can be trusted to pay it all off before the end of the month, do your shopping on a Tesco credit card to get the points to use elsewhere
  • Eat before you shop
  • Buy extras like milk and bread at the corner shop ? what slight extra you pay for the milk, you save on not seeing tempting offers!! (4 pts of milk is actually CHEAPER at my corner shop than Tesco Express)
  • Sign up for anything that will send you free vouchers
  • Pay at the self service machines in Tesco as they accept all vouchers regardless of purchases
  • Avoid gift/cleaning aisle in shops ? you buy things you don?t need FOOD ? Menu plan! It can be a 2 or 3 week mix n match type thing, but have some plan to help you shop ? Work out which foods can be economised on, and which are just not worth it ? value mushrooms are just an odd shape, value mince is more fatty, but if you strain it it is fine, but frozen mince tastes like disintergrated cardboard ? Cook bulk meals and freeze ? 2 packs of mince can often make 3 meals, where as 1 pack makes 1 n a bit ? Bulk meals out with lots of veg ? again, a Bolognese sauce goes a lot further if its filled with peppers, grated carrots etc ? Take drinks out with you so you are not forced to buy ? Get Fruit and Veg at markets (have discovered that DH works next to the people who supply the organic veg box people ? we are now getting organic veg for less than basic tesco veg prices

GIFTS
? Keep a list of birthdays with you so you can buy presents as you spot bargains
? Save for Christmas NOW ? Use a club or a separate savings account with a standing order - don?t wait and see what you can afford at the end of the month ? you won?t be able to

GENERAL
? Save up spare £1 coins and coppers etc ? You can get it changed at most Sainsbury?s in a machine ? it does take some of your money in a charge, but I never get it changed if I have to take it to a bank, so it makes more sense.
? Claim back you bank charges if you have them
? Cut up credit cards ? If it is not a matter of starvation or eviction, it is NOT an emergency
ITS NOT A BARGAIN IF YOU DIDN?T NEED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

bumping it up my threads!

GreedyGecko · 26/06/2007 12:34

How is everyone doing? DP is off sick for at least a month atm. Not sure what he's being paid, as its because of the accident, they'll hopefully pay him his full wage like they did before, but tbh not holding out hope, am expecting SSP. Not sure how much that is. About £68 I expect! Doesn't even cover the mortgage.

We have yet more insurance claims to deal with. Our kitchen has been leaking and we hadn't rrealised, so now we need a whole new kitchen, buildings for floorboards, wall & flooring, contents for units which is a pita as we have to pay 2 lots of xs.

MrsWho · 27/06/2007 22:46

well I've not really been on this thread which usually means I'm not been very good

Take-aways

Haven't spent much on food apart form that though.

we also have a new hobby, have joined the canoe club (£18 for family for a year) and I am on a course for 4 weeks for £20! So not an expensive one!

charliecat · 28/06/2007 12:38

Well I have had no money coming in from Tax credits since I split up with Dp which was a while ago now.
The selling on ebay is going ok and thats whats been feeding us.
I have a mighty CC card bill building up though. Hoping to get backdated Tcs to clear it.

Bananaknickers · 28/06/2007 12:47

Were not doing too bad. Using up all the food in the house now because we are skint big time this month. Pay day soon .
I am fed up because I am not patient, but we are going in the right direction at least.
E bay not doing to bad as I am using it for spending money on a caravan hloiday this year.

How do people manage to have it all? I feel sorry for our kids because they have never been in a plane. My DS didn't tell us he had the chance to go on a school holiday because we don't have the money .
DH dosen't earn bad money but we have years of debt and a huge lack of comunication. We have been doing this for a year now and I know we are making a difference.
I am getting down now about being unable to buy new clothes.I get given the kids clothes or buy from ebay or bootfairs.

Bananaknickers · 28/06/2007 12:49

I love this thread Charlie it keeps me going

charliecat · 28/06/2007 12:50

Dont get down about not getting new clothes. one you have washed them once they are no longer new.....breeze on past those clothes shops or go to primark

i haven't been on this thread for ages because of all sorts of disasters. and needless to say we are right back where we started but today I have started to sort out the freezer and take the spending in hand again. thank god for the freezer list, it keeps me sane (and how sad is that!!??) first task next week is to find a cheaper cc to transfer it all to and to see if it makes sense to use it to pay off OD. not sure but will be checking out MSE for tips.

Bananaknickers · 28/06/2007 13:16

I would love to make a frezzer list tell me how it's done please. I am confussed. Say you had a packet of 8 pack of chicken and used 5, how would you put that on the list then?
I am so scatty

charliecat · 28/06/2007 13:52

Ok freezer list
10 x cauli cheese grills, just leave a space big enough to score it down to 4 or whatever as you use them.
REALLY works. Stops you from buying same old shit you already had.
If you have older kids get them to count the fishfingers etc in exchange for choosing dinner that night.
Easiest done when youve emptied the freezer and have just done a freezer shop.

OP posts:
ska · 28/06/2007 14:33

what I did (this was my tip originally) was empty out the whole freezer and then put it all back in as my husband wrote it all down! Then I typed it up and posted it on the front of the fridge (as my freezer is in the shed). So I had:
1 family bol sauce, 3 x kids bol sauce, pack 20 fish fingers, 3 x brown loaves etc and then change the number in the box (used a table in Word) but there's no need to be that posh, just a list will do. And it helps to write a list for what you need to buy too. I have also done the same for the cupboards in the house, eg 6 x cans tomatoes, 3 x baked beans etc etc. It works even though it sounds really anally retentive! And it helps me tidy up as I chuck out really old stuff and then can meal plan brilliantly. When I first did it we only had to buy fresh stuff like veg and fruit for at least 3 weeks.

kirstygem · 29/06/2007 14:00

Was wondering where everyone was on this thread. Hoping to save quite a bit this month as DH away for 6 weeks and so I just going to eat even more basic than normal. Planning to totally empty the freezer and cupboards so that save a bit.
Also bored in evenings so listing anything and everything on Ebay.

grouchyoscar · 30/06/2007 15:27

Hello again

Heavy month last month...It's DH's birthday next month so I got his pressies early, plus bf's wedding gift too. Only managed to stuff away 50 uid for me (as well as DS's 55, but they're all on dd so I can't miss them.

This month will be no better...I've had to get the shopping as DH hasn't been paid yet (again) and I need a haircut (1st for 3.5 years) and I've comitted to take DH out for a birthday meal too (and paid for some gig tickets too)

But good news...I got a lovely classic shift dress for ONE Pound in the local Scope shop. So nice I will wear it when I next get the chance to go out

GreedyGecko · 05/07/2007 12:36

I tend to only come on here really when things aren't going that great to give myself a kick up the backside. And no, things aren't going that well...Still waiting for quotes etc for the work that needs doing, so insurance is doing nothing really. Why are there so many tradesmen out there that are so unreliable? We're plodding on with the rest of it though, so the cards are taking a bit of a hammering. Fortunately tips atm are really good. I'm also being really good with shopping. Do a weekly shop about every 9-10 days, spend £40-£50, then just top up from corner shop on bread, iceland for milk, and do a freezer shop at Farmfoods once a month which costs me about £25 to fill the freezer. I'm not really trying to keep the shopping bills down, I guess I've just got used to avoiding those aisles with the goodies in!

MascaraOHara · 05/07/2007 13:13

Hello again, Thought I ought to come back to this thread as things have started going wrong..

300 to last me til the end of the month.. I'm sure it's doable just need inspiration. I'll need £50 for petrol and not sure what bills I have still to come out before then

MrsWho · 05/07/2007 20:46

O/D is growing again (though CC is going down)

MascaraOHara · 05/07/2007 20:49

Which has the lowest interest rate MrsWho?

I see mortgage rate has gone up

MrsWho · 05/07/2007 20:55

cc but I tend to ignore that and crry on spending whereas I notice the O/d so don't spend as much if that makes sense?

MrsMcJnr · 13/07/2007 16:02

Hello can I join you? DH and I are in dire straits and need to get sorted. We are expecting our first baby in January and hope to move abroad in March time.

FlameBatfink · 08/08/2007 09:09

Are we still going?

Need to slink back in

Cappuccino · 08/08/2007 09:27

can anyone tell me if the spreadsheet I did yonks back is of any use to anyone?

cos a friend asked for it and I thought, no-one has ever told me if it is any use or not

FlameBatfink · 08/08/2007 09:51

I sort of picked it apart to make one that suited me better - so in that respect yes, it was a great help I wouldn't have know where to begin without it.

I have forwarded it on to a lot of people on this list who wanted it, so hopefully more will come back and give feedback soon.

charliecat · 08/08/2007 15:55
