How much has the snow cost you?

SandysMam · 01/03/2018 13:47

There has been no joy in the snow and subsequent snow days for us Sad

DH is self employed and not been able to get to work (so won’t get paid) and DS is Home from school and so heating and lights etc have had to be on whereas usually in the day I keep as low as possible to save money. Also missed out on him having free school meals and have had to use food I had planned for evenings for lunch etc. Really stressful when on a super tight budget like we are! Has the snow cost anyone else a small fortune?

Paid for extra nursery sessions to enable me to do some extra work. The place I would be working is closed due to snow so couldn't work so won't get paid.

MistyMeena · 01/03/2018 15:30

Self employed here and had to close, if weather continues over weekend will cost me about £1k I reckon 😳

bimbobaggins · 01/03/2018 15:35

Financially I won’t know until my boss says if getting paid or not. Heating on extra and eating a lot as bored.
Haven’t been to any shops so had a couple of nsd.
I hate it, it feels like house arrest

bimbobaggins · 01/03/2018 15:37

Plus I’ve just opened chocolates I’d bought my mum for mother’s day so they’ll need replacing

TalkinPeace · 01/03/2018 15:37

It will cost DH £1200 in lost work.
Me nothing as I can work and bill from home.

GreenSeededGrape · 01/03/2018 15:39

£5 to ask CM to collect dd1 tomorrow so I don't need to drag dd2 out in the bitter cold.

No idea re heating as it's been on 24/7 since last Thursday so thinking a lotShock

GreenSeededGrape · 01/03/2018 15:40

In fairness bimboo some of your costs could have been avoided with a bit of self control 😂

Floralnomad · 01/03/2018 15:42

It’s probably saved me money , my heating is on all day everyday anyway and we generally go out somewhere , have lunch out and then pop into the shops / supermarket on the way back at least 3 x a week . As it is my car hasn’t left the driveway and I’ve only walked over to the shop once to top up on fresh fruit and I’ve also cancelled the dogs haircut for tomorrow as our road is like sheet ice and I’m not driving anywhere that is not essential .

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/03/2018 15:42

I was thinking this today - heating alone must be such a worry for anyone on a low wage or benefits in this weather. I wish there was a way of helping people out with this, like you can with a food bank.

Copperspot · 01/03/2018 15:43

Nothing luckily! In fact i’ve saved money....

I’ve spent the week at my mum and dad’s house as it’s walking distance to my work. They are luckily comfortably off and happy to feed me 3 meals a day and for me to take advantage of the heating / hot water. I know this makes me very fortunate.

I live alone and always worry about putting the heat on, etc. They don’t give a shit my dad’s wafting around in a t shirt with the heating on high. Feels very weird to me! I normally have a few layers / blankets and put heating on for just a couple of hours in the evening!

AlpacaLypse · 01/03/2018 15:43

Two days income as I have decided to close tomorrow as well. Plus heating. On the other hand the paperwork back log is disappearing nicely and I've caught up on some household chores that have been mounting up.

bimbobaggins · 01/03/2018 15:43

No doubt about that green😇😇

Ariela · 01/03/2018 15:44

No sun = no solar power. Log fire = free heat (we cut our own wood, and people call us to remove trees that fall down so never buy wood). Both self employed but it can all be postponed.

IVFNewbie · 01/03/2018 15:44

I have made about 40 quid. No loss.

Copperspot · 01/03/2018 15:44

To add, i’m there so i know i can get to work, not just to sit in the warmth Grin

punkpuffin · 01/03/2018 15:49

Dh is freelance and might not be able to make it to where he's supposed to be working the next 3 days so he will probably lose £600 ish.

We are also having our bathroom refitted, the builder now cant get here so we have no bath, shower or sink, emotionally that's costing me a lot!!

mumofthemonsters808 · 01/03/2018 15:50

Everyday that the school is closed will cost me £20 for childcare.

AlbusPercival · 01/03/2018 15:51

I was already stuck at home due to an injury so just extra gas to keep warm.

ginghamstarfish · 01/03/2018 15:53

We've saved money ... DH working from home from yesterday till next week (saving on petrol), Tesco delivery was cancelled yesterday so instead we have to eat out of freezer/storecupboard which will make for some interesting combinations.

PickAChew · 01/03/2018 15:54

The kids are eating us out of house and home and the boiler is going non stop just to keep the house tolerable with everyone home.

On the other hand, DH has driven 150 miles less, so far this week, as he's been forced to work at home, so probably even.

Bexter801 · 01/03/2018 16:18

@bimbobaggins,I'm sure your mum will understand :/ severe circumstances and all! I'm just bored out of my trolley,my son is off his course cause of snow, eating non stop,I'm eating non stop, heating on full time.

coffeemugged · 01/03/2018 16:28

It's saved me money!

I work 25mils away so 50miles round trip. Plus home visits Have plenty I can do WFH - all my paperwork and calls etc.

No petrol, no buying lunch because I'm too disorganised to take it etc.

Heating on but I've saved way more in petrol!

TheClitterati · 01/03/2018 18:54

Nothing but a big gas bill / I work from
Home.

And I've lost my gloves - so about£30

Spudlet · 01/03/2018 18:59

We're fortunate in that DH can work from home, and DS and I are at home anyway so no additional costs. However I did cancel DSs swimming lesson on Tuesday so have lost that money, and cancelled his childminder session today as the roads are awful. So between £10 and £30, depending on whether the cm is happy to make the lost session up later (I suspect not, which is fair enough).

bimbobaggins · 01/03/2018 19:43

Yes she definitely will bexter, they weren’t even that nice. Thornton’s!!
