How much do you pay for phone and broadband?

whataboutbob · 16/02/2018 12:07

We are currently paying £49 for phone ( incoming calls only, we use mobile for outgoing) and unlimited broadband with Virgin. I think it seems high, I also want to have full use of landline again. Internet speed is not amazing and it quite commonly cuts out at times of high usage.
Any recommendations? Thank you.

On the good initial deals when I merged my 6 BT landlines into 3 and moved a broadband line to a landline BT offered a new "good deal" which I see only lasts for 12 months. I suspect very shortly they will try to put it back up to more than I was paying before even. It is that captive customer and difficult of switching that is hard when you work full time are very busy and cannot afford to risk the mistakes providers make when you switch things around. My son took over his tenants' broadband when they left and despite that he had to wait for a brand new modem etc to be delivered. They never make it easy (and that was sticking with the same company).

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 21:50

@myusernamewastaken you need to do as I posted earlier

But most important you must ask for ANYTIME CALLS that gives you ALL phone calls included in uk for up to an hour at a time, if you want yo talk longer you just ring off and dial again for another hour

BT should be giving you all that for about £25 per month I think

Say you really like the company and want to stay with them, if that is what you feel better with, but you can't afford it so compliment them but say why are they giving better prices to new customers rather than loyal ones, it isn't fair etc etc

You want to be loyal to them but are being penalised for it and it isn't making you very happy so want to go somewhere else that will like you being loyal to them

GOOD LUCK

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 21:55

Yes shouldn't be paying £53 per month Shock

myusernamewastaken · 18/02/2018 22:03

Thank you for your help @IhaveChillytoes.....ive just rang bt and the man has given me a number to call tomorrow but he did warn me if i cancelled they would charge me £95 as id be breaking my contract x

myusernamewastaken · 18/02/2018 22:08

Im sorry i am clueless....im soo savvy with all my other bills....utilities...insurances etc but this baffles me for some reason.

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 22:22

I don't even like to tell you how much I'm paying, Ihave. Suffice to say that ZB is quite right. BT are really starting to rack up the charges now. They're no longer the 'super bargain deal' I thought they'd be initially.

LapdanceShoeshine · 18/02/2018 22:23

With Plusnet, superfast broadband & basic phone line (no calls) is about £38 (we pay £51+ altogether but that includes BT sport & I’m not sure how much that is)

Broadband service is good & their call centres are in Yorkshire, not Mumbai Grin

PickleFish · 18/02/2018 22:26

I'll try again. But I did do basically that, and they just told me when my contract was up (in a week or so after I called), and said they didn't do price matches, and just tried to offer me other stuff. It was really frustrating as everyone else seems to be able to negotiate with them, but I just kept getting 'no' for an answer.

LapdanceShoeshine · 18/02/2018 22:27

If you need to use your landline for 0845 etc, try www.weq4u.co.uk

You type in the number you want & they find a free alternative. It doesn’t always put you through to the right dept but it’s great otherwise (& also, as the name implies, if you’re in a long queue it will wait in place for you & ring you back when it’s your turn)

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 22:28

Oh ok sorry Sad are you still within your contract? The prices on the website are much cheaper so I thought you were out of it

When did you start it? How much longer do you have in it?

Check your speed you are getting at different times of day with CHECKMYSPEED I think it is called

But others can help with name, cos if you aren't getting the speed you were told you would or anything like it then they are not providing what you are paying for

So they shouldn't charge you for something you aren't getting iyswim

PickleFish · 18/02/2018 22:32

I should be out of my contract now, finished end of January I think. I hope I haven't started a new contract inadvertently. I know it was going to go up to something like £45, rather than whatever deal I'd been on. I told them I didn't want to continue and they tried to talk me into staying, but only by offering me more, not taking money off. And by telling me how crap the other services would be. Maybe I was too definite that I could get a way better deal on Vodaphone!

LightastheBreeze · 18/02/2018 22:34

It was very strange with BT, I signed up for a year at about £30 with a £125 free credit card and I was all set to change at the end of 12 months to Sky on their deal and then I got an email to say I could sign a contract for a further 18 months with BT at the price I was already paying so I did. BT would be about £50 without the contract. Obviously if it goes up at the end of the 18 months I will change to Sky who we have the TV with. £25-30 seems reasonable to pay, certainly not £50

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 22:38

Pickle you need to tell them you want to leave even though you "love the company" paying them compliments works well

Make sure it is 0800 number so you don't pay for it too

They will put you thru but if you say once you have been put thru to disconnections that you want to leave

They will try to keep you and just keep saying you want to pay xxxxx and get yyyyyy for your money - whatever is important to you

And if they threaten you with disconnection now just take their details, name and extension number and say you just want to check with your DH or DW or DP or cat or dog or whoever you want just to give you thinking time

Write everything down the time of the call, number you rang and who you spoke to etc

At the end of contract is good time to do it cos otherwise they will just increase at end of contract

myusernamewastaken · 18/02/2018 22:43

Ive got 6 months left on my contract and have bt infinity1....43.99 a month...line rental and free weekend calls....my bill was 53 this month which was calls made during the week....the calls are very expensive too and i only ever ring landline numbers....

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 22:44

You don't need to tell them who you want to change to

Just say friends in your road (so they can't tell you that it isn't as good etc in your road)

Just tell them what you want to pay and what you want for that money

LightastheBreeze · 18/02/2018 22:45

I would probably just sign up with another company if it is expensive and you are out of contract. No point in paying loads if you can get it cheaper, they are relying on people not moving to get all the money in.

LightastheBreeze · 18/02/2018 22:51

I’m not sure if people pay different amounts depending where they live, so if the broadband is good, where I live I think it is so any companies will work ok and you pay less as there is more competition. If you live in a remote area maybe it’s harder to get it to work well and that is why some BT contracts are expensive as they know people are fearful of moving supplier

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 22:54

myusernamewastaken ok mark in your calendar the month before the contract ends then rung them

But please check the speed you are getting to check the service you are getting

If you aren't getting what you are paying for then ring them and complain and ask for anytime calls to be included or to be realised from contract cos they have broken it

I know it says speeds up to 76 or 52 or whatever but if you are only ever getting xx then they have broken the contract

If you are ringing businesses then check for 0800 numbers

You could get a burner phone (£10 from tesco) with a SIM card with calls included might work out cheaper until end of contract

myusernamewastaken · 18/02/2018 22:58

Thank you so much @IhaveChillyToes will check the speed tomorrow and call them and if i can get my calls included..

Jarstastic · 19/02/2018 16:45

With no contract on Now TV bundle, broadband, phone line with unlimited calls and Now TV bundle - £37.

I rang up about cancelling the TV part as we usually use Netflix, but turned out price would go up out of the bundle.

MongerTruffle · 19/02/2018 17:06

Ihave Calls to 0345 numbers are always charged at the same rate as calls to geographical numbers.

IhaveChillyToes · 19/02/2018 20:46

I meant if you have a 0345 number and you can find a regular number 0207 0208 or 01xxx then it is included in anytime calls but sometimes 0345 might not be

It depends on the phone company if they include it in anytime or not

Also 0344
