How much do you pay for phone and broadband?

We are currently paying £49 for phone ( incoming calls only, we use mobile for outgoing) and unlimited broadband with Virgin. I think it seems high, I also want to have full use of landline again. Internet speed is not amazing and it quite commonly cuts out at times of high usage.
Any recommendations? Thank you.

Virgin and BT have been known for ripping off customers, poor internet provision and poor customer service for years.

But BT in particular know they tend to have the older customers who are reluctant to go with companies they aren't familiar with.

My parents are with them, pay a fortune for an unreliable service, are fearful of using the landline phone as they don't understand the pricing.

My siblings and I have been TRYING to get them to change for years but they won't consider "new companies with no reputation yet" 🙄

£23.99 - Line rental £18.99 and Broadband £5 - Provider is Sky.
Don't use the landline for calls.

ZBIsabella · 18/02/2018 12:15

Far too much - about £48 a month (it was £90 last month as I was somewhere abroad) for mobile; about £67 each for two separate BT landlines and separate broadband accounts; about £60 for sky (down from nearly 90 when the boys had Sky Sport). So that somes to £242. I do work from home and one landline is a work business line and the same with one broadband line.

Our biggest problem here is dodgy copper over head wires, BT box miles away, BT station about 4 miles from there, no cabling plus poor moblie signal (as no one will consent to a mast near either). I have a sat. dish for Sky. We are not outer hebrides - we are outer London. UK telecoms are bad. We (I did it) had to raise £12k from neighbours to pay openreach a third of the cost to get even broadband good enough to watch TV on. Even now the upload speeds are so slow my cloud account is pretty much useless to upload the files I want to although that is a well known common problem - slow upload speeds.

SAo that £2904 a year let us say £3000 by the time you add on months with extra charges as we are abroad etc. Phew..... If I ever get rid of the children - 5 years?? I will not keep the second broadband/phone line but so far it is the only way to get signal up there, we've tried boosters and all sorts.

Graphista · 18/02/2018 13:15

ZB why on earth haven't you switched supplier?

Flomy · 18/02/2018 13:17

£25 B.T. Weekend calls/line rental & unlimited broadband.

£10 Tesco mobile. Loads of minutes, texts & wi-fi.

Flomy · 18/02/2018 13:20

Graphista Would your parents ask B.T for a new deal?

Im with them - £25 B.T. Weekend calls/line rental & unlimited broadband.

Im sticking with them as Sky were so so bad. Its the lesser of two evils I think.

welshweasel · 18/02/2018 13:23

£29 a month for unlimited fibre, phone and now tv (includes sky atlantic, sky one etc). No contract.

ZBIsabella · 18/02/2018 13:41

I am too worried about lsoing my whole business which depends on internet connection and this landline telephone number; I quite like having two separate broadband lines so if one is down I can use the other and not have my business crashing to a halt; I quite like things utterly separate so if one fails the other doesn't so having Sky for sat TV with a dish getting the signal, then BT for the landlines and broadband and then vodafone for my mobile - I only use the mobile for whatsapp with the children and occasional calls and most of all work emails when I am out or away on business.

This is the improve package by the way - until 12 months ago I had 6 BT landlines at home - got rid of the one for the fax machine, one for the burglar alarm and the one which was for internet from dial up days when yhou needed separate lines - that was scary - hoping BT would move one broadband account to one of the other lines without cutting it off. They managed it. I agree it needs to be reduce even more but I am going to leave itu ntil the boys leave home.

Graphista · 18/02/2018 13:51

No they won't they're frightened BT would "leave them" (cut them off) if they're "awkward customers" - seriously they're a nightmare for this kinda thing.

PickleFish · 18/02/2018 13:54

I wish I knew how to get these deals with BT! They just don't budge when i try to negotiate. They offer more stuff, but not lower prices. I'd rather not actually change as I have things all set up with their router, but it's way too expensive. Vodaphone would be a lot cheaper, but of course BT tell me they're awful, but still won't match the prices.

Graphista · 18/02/2018 13:59

Pickle why are you listening to BT bad mouthing their competitors? OF COURSE they're going to say BT are better!

Rafflesway · 18/02/2018 14:09

Got a sensational deal with SSE 17 months ago!

Landline rental, Unlimited fibre broadband - up to 38mbps - unlimited landline calls anytime, (just redial if 60 mins or more), including VAT £21 per month!
Unfortunately, the deal was for 18 months and ends next month. Can't see anything near that price now. Sad

PickleFish · 18/02/2018 14:42

oh I know they're just saying that. But I can't get the conversation away from that and into giving me a better price!! they will offer me additions to my package, like tv channels or whatever, which I don't want. But won't give me a lower price, even when I tell them about other companies being lower. It's so frustrating.

(I have no idea if they're right or not about Vodaphone, but I'm not just assuming they are!).

specialsubject · 18/02/2018 14:43

BT are the most expensive. Changing is a bit of hassle but is your time worth more than the extra you are paying?

derenstar · 18/02/2018 14:59

We’re paying £32.50 a month with Plusnet for unlimited fibre broadband upto 76mps and line rental (though our land line isn’t even plugged in!) Up until 2 months ago, we were paying £56 a month to BT for the exact same thing. BT were the first and only provider of fibre in our area for nearly 3 years so we were forced to stick with them as normal broadband wasn’t an option for us. This is because we’re on a new build estate and the lines the builder put in were the cheapest and shoddiest they could get away with.

Something I learned which might help those of you still with BT, Plusnet are owned by BT so it’s the exact same line and quality. The switch was doddle and best of all, they allowed us to use our own router (DH bought some souped up one because he takes his online gaming waay too seriously). Have to admit, I can’t even remember the last time I had to reset the router, when we had the BT home hub thingie, we were resetting the damn thing every other day; it was beyond shite!

HolidayHelpPlease · 18/02/2018 16:18

I’m shocked you’re paying so much with Virgin - I have TiVo, broadband and telephone with Virgin for £35 a month!

Ssw1 · 18/02/2018 16:25

£18.99 line rental and unlimited broadband with sky

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 20:20

I think I'm being ripped off reading all these.

myusernamewastaken · 18/02/2018 21:21

Im being ripped off too....i pay around £53 a month with BT....this includes fibre optic internet...line rental and free weekend calls on the landline...im a lone parent and dont really understand it all so am scared of changing it..
Ive also noticed my landline calls are really expensive...if i ring a local landline im charged 30p for the call just to connect for a few seconds..can anyone give me any advice please.

MistressDeeCee · 18/02/2018 21:29

£46 - it's a Sky TV (basic channels) TV, phone & broadband package. Also get free landline & mobile calls up to 1 hour

cozietoesie · 18/02/2018 21:29

I think that the first thing, myuser, is to work out what you really need.

littlenicky61 · 18/02/2018 21:30

£17.40 per month unlimited broadband and line rental with free calls after 7pm and weekends - with Sky

Definately shop around or ring Virgin and say you leaving as its now not an affordable expense for you and they will most likely offer you a deal. If not there are much cheaper providers out there

IhaveChillyToes · 18/02/2018 21:38

Pickle you need to say you want to leave them

You then get put thru to disconnections

But really it is the dept that try to keep you with them

You just tell them it is too much money and you want to leave unless you can get same stuff for £20 per month or whatever you want to pay

They will then say are you sure and you say yes you like the company but it is too much and you are leaving

Then they will come down in price but very important if they offer the price near what you want you say, what is your name? When you have their details you then say you want to check before signing up for new contract with your DH or DW or brother or sister or parents or the cat or whoever you want

Then put them on mute and walk away from phone for few minutes or say you will ring back

So get reference number and their details

Ring back the next day and refer to the previous conversation and say yes please

Hey presto - cheaper Internet and phone

It works with TV deals and POWER companies and insurance deals etc

BUT YOU MUST BE FRIENDLY AND PLEASANT on the phone

GOOD LUCK

£20 unlimited broadband and tv.
£10 phone... between two phones. £5 each.

We own the phones though.

No landline... but if we did it would be under the same £20.

insertimaginativeusername · 18/02/2018 21:43

£30 fibre broadband and phone line with unlimited calls to any number...was going to shop around but sounds like I'm getting a good deal!
