Asda vs Aldi

Nightskydreamer · 29/12/2017 13:32

What is everyone's opinion on using Asda home delivery or using Aldi to save money?

I constantly go back and forth between the two thinking I'm saving money but I've just got back from Aldi and spent £66 on a weeks shop then had to go to asda to get a 'top up' shop of things aldi doesn't stock like frozen veg and baby food.
I had to arrange childcare so I could go to Aldi as well (no way am I taking baby shopping) and I'm bloody knackered!

I go back to work in 2 weeks full time as well.

Are the savings worth it, or is it outweighed by the convenience of home delivery from a store that stocks everything?

Aldi I s far cheaper than asda I think and less to be tempted by such as make up and clothes . My local aldi sell baby food or to save more money just feed the baby regular food if he is over six months they can have mostly what you eat. Also my aldi has loads of frozen veg but I have noticed some other aldi don't have as much. I thibk Iceland do free delivery if you could get frozen from there and fresh at aldi that would work.

RavingRoo · 29/12/2017 13:41

Aldi isn’t cheaper if you cook from scratch or buy a lot of fresh fruit and veg. In fact it can work out more expensive. Having said this, however, I don’t think online delivery for any supermarket is good

banannabreadforme · 29/12/2017 13:44

I do my big shop at aldi because I do find it to be less expensive. I find I sometimes buy things I don't need because they have some strange things on offer 😂 (lawnmowers, chainsaws, ski jackets etc). I then nip to asda for things you can't get eg. light bulbs, branded toiletries.

KiteMarked · 29/12/2017 13:44

I use online delivery from Tesco. It stops me from impulse buying - we are samey sort of eaters so I buy a lot of the same bits each week. Saves me time and hassle. I think that is worth any extra costs, though I haven't done a side by side comparison.

Have you got prices to demonstrate this Raving? We cook from scratch a lot and also buy plenty of fresh fruit and veg. I reckon I’ve knocked a third of my monthly food spend by ditching Sainsburys in favour of Lidl.

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/12/2017 13:51

Asda home delivery isn't that reliable.

However the quality of the fruit and veg is much better so any cost savings from Aldi are wiped out from having to replace stuff far sooner and buying what you couldn't get there in other supermarkets. When we shopped there and I had no car it was either taxis fares or buses to pay for and having to pay for two taxis due to a top up shop was also extra money.

Id be inclined to chance asda tbh.

Least you eventually get a refund from asda.

You don't get any money from Aldi to replace the stuff that's mouldy a day later

Frustrationqueen · 29/12/2017 13:53

I tried this and found i dont like a lot of aldis stuff. I also still had to top up my shopping elsewhere, so although my shopping bill was coming through cheaper. It actually wasnt when i put both receipts together.

I think we should not forget our local markets as well. I've been out and bought cool bags and two of those string bags and I AM (I really really AM) going to go down the market and see what they've got and how the prices compare. I've got the choice of the market in the city where I work which would mean hauling the stuff back to the train station and thence home, or with a WFH day I could do a trip to the market in my local town instead.

I really must get on and do this, I've been meaning to do it for ages - but I'll do a bit of scouring of the internet first to get prices per kg es on a few items so I can take this week me and see if the market(s) really are cheaper and I haven't just fallen victim to 'market fever'!

For me though it is absolutely the issue of convenience - going to Aldi or Lidl (can't remember which) and they sell dishwasher tablets but you can't get dishwasher salt pisses me off to a huge degree! And having to top up periodically at an alternative supermarket is a pain in the wotsits.

In terms of reliable online grocers Asda are pretty shit a lot of the time - lots of substitutions, unavailable items, and yes you might get a refund 'eventually' but it will be eventually and you'll probably have to chase them for weeks via social media to get them to sort it out for you. I've shopped for the last few years with Morrison's and they have been very reliable, minimal subs, good quality of service, no quibbles on returns or refunds, as are Ocado and Waitrose. Tesco weren't fab nor were they particularly bad but for whatever reason, I just don't like them so I don't shop there.

I dream and drool over the concept of living somewhere warm where you can wander in the sunshine back from work dropping into the fish market for some super well priced freshly caught today fish and the best of what vegetables are on show.... Anyway, back to reality!

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/12/2017 14:08

Yy Morrisons probably the best out of the bunch. Ocado are also good but more pricy.

Tesco take the piss after a while.

Very happy woth Morrisons and very helpful delivery staff.

Refunds always been simple too

revelsandrose · 29/12/2017 14:28

I like asda, I find the online shop helps me stick to a meal plan and budget. Also you can get everything you need in one place, as you say they only have three varieties of baby food in Aldi. frozen food, household products and toiletries selection isn't great either when you have a large family.
I use click and collect with asda so you don't even pay a delivery charge!!!

Nightskydreamer · 29/12/2017 14:30

We are scratch cookers so we go for fresh beg fruit and meat. My local aldi is really very small and they don't do stuff like wholewheat pasta, chickpeas etc.

Oh how I would love to wander down the local market on the way home.... just a shame the nearest one is 40 mins away and shuts at 5!

I have also found fresh food spoils very quickly from aldi which is why I have swapped back in the past.

I love the meat from Aldi. My local Asda meat is rank. I do pop in for certain things. But Asda isn't much cheaper than Sainsburys IMO

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:03

I don't agree with it working out more expensive for cooking from scratch. I think cooking saves money. Vegetables from aldi are relatively cheap and I find save money.

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:04

I find Aldi's veg are a lot fresher and last Ionger than Asda's.

Jumblebee · 29/12/2017 15:08

I do think Aldi is cheaper, but the past few months I've found that the fruit and veg is crap (it used to be fine!) Now the fruit is always mouldy by the next day Envy

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:22

I don't know what branch jumble goes to bjt in our local Aldi the fruit and veg is so fresh it lasts for ages. I do store all my fruit and veg in a cold environment though to preserve longer. Asda however the fruit and veg had no taste and had been half off at time of purchase!

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:23

but

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:25

Not to mention it was twice the price as well Angry

Jumblebee · 29/12/2017 15:31

@PasstheStarmix a relatively new branch in my hometown. I was always shocked when people complained about the fruit and veg in Aldi being crap, because I never experienced this. Maybe it's since I've been visiting the new branch as it's a lot closer Confused

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 15:33

That new branch doesn't sound like it has it's act together. I would certainly boycot that one in future Hmm

RavingRoo · 29/12/2017 15:34

I get fresh loose veg from a mix of places because I need it to last and not spoil rotten within a few days. Got 2kg of loose carrots and a 1kg of loose potatoes from waitrose for under a £1 in total 3 weeks ago and they are still fresh (don’t keep them in the fridge) but get them from Indian grocers too. I get big bags of frozen veg from my local Indian cash and carry because I get 3-4 600g bags for a pound. Quality chopped tomatoes that aren’t sour are cheaper from local Indian grocers - can often get 5 or 6 for a pound.

I used to use Aldi for the tinned potatoes as can make a very quick aloo curry from them, but they have recently started to fall apart and so I have switched to another place.

RavingRoo · 29/12/2017 15:34

I spend 20/week max

Jumblebee · 29/12/2017 17:25

Nope, I think I'll have to go back to the other branch as apart from the fruit and veg I love everything else (and if I do go to another supermarket I find myself picking things up and saying "I could get this for 90p in Aldi! And then putting it back!)

PasstheStarmix · 29/12/2017 19:53

Haha that's exactly what I do jumble. I just begrudge paying it to be honest when I could get it in Aldi or lidle for way cheaper Confused
